Lena Dunham knows that going into business with a romantic partner — let alone someone you have only known for a short period of time — is not for everyone. But a few years ago, about a month into their courtship, the Girls creator approached her partner, British-Peruvian indie musician Luis Felber, with an unexpected proposal: “Will you make a show with me?”

At the time, Dunham and Felber, who had met on a blind date set up by a mutual friend, were still getting to know each other. They had yet to hold hands in public, much less call each other girlfriend and boyfriend. They had barely seen — or heard about — the other person’s work. (Despite having a mother and a sister who were big fans of Girls, Felber admits he had never watched the HBO dramedy, and has only screened a couple episodes to date.)

It’s been seven years since a Lena Dunham show has been on TV, a stretch of time that catches even the “Girls” creator herself off guard, as she ponders the break between her second HBO show, “Camping,” and her new Netflix series, “Too Much.”

But the reprieve in between projects was a necessity for Dunham, who notes she spent the entirety of her 20s crafting TV series, with “Girls” running on HBO from 2012-2017 and “Camping” coming shortly after in 2018. “I felt like I needed to take a little bit of time to reconnect to what I really love about what I do,” Dunham told TheWrap ahead of the debut of “Too Much,” a Netflix comedy loosely inspired by Dunham’s decision to move to the U.K. after a breakup.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences handed out its annual invitations to membership today, with 534 new invitees. If all of them accept, the new overall membership would be 11,120, of which 10,143 would be eligible to vote for Oscars and run for governance elections.

Among those on the list are newly minted Oscar winners Mikey Madison (Best Actress for Anora) and Kieran Culkin. Among all the invitees this year 91 are past Oscar nominees including 26 winners. The prominent star names include Ariana Grande, Dave Bautista, Jodie Comer, Jason Momoa, Aubrey Plaza, Sebastian Stan, Jeremy Strong, Gillian Anderson, Stephen Graham, Andrew Scott, Danielle Deadwyler, and on and on.

Oscar-winning actress Natalie Portman (“Black Swan”) and director Lena Dunham (“Catherine Called Birdy”) are teaming on a new romantic comedy called “Good Sex,” and there is a pretty decent casting update to share.

The latest additions to “Good Sex,” according to The Hollywood Reporter, are Mark Ruffalo and musican Tucker Pillsbury (known as Role Model), as the pair have joined the upcoming Netflix pic focusing on Portman’s Ally, a successful professional woman in her 40s that is forced back into the world of dating after a decade in a failed relationship and gets into a steaming fling with a 20s-something hipster.

As Bella Ramsey returns for Season 2 of The Last of Us, they’re opening up about their autism diagnosis for the first time.

The Golden Globe nominee, whose HBO show returns on April 13, recently revealed that they discovered their “freeing” diagnosis while filming Season 1 of The Last of Us after a crew member with a neurodivergent child noticed some familiar behaviors.

“I’ve spoken a bit about neurodivergence before, but I always for some reason didn’t want to… I felt like I didn’t want to say what it was… Shoot,” they told British Vogue. “I got diagnosed with autism when I was filming Season 1 of The Last of Us.”

During their Consumer Electronics Show (CES) presentation last night, Naughty Dog head Neil Druckmann officially announced that The Last of Us season two will debut this coming April, exclusively on HBO and streaming on Max.

The second season will consist of seven episodes, and while we don't have an exact premiere date just yet, we'd imagine the series returns sometime in mid-April, in the same release window Game of Thrones used to occupy during its run.

Sophie Okonedo will receive the Richard Harris Award at the 2024 British Independent Film Awards (BIFAs), organizers unveiled Monday.

The Richard Harris Award recognizes the outstanding contribution of an actor to British film. Previous recipients of the honor include the likes of Samantha Morton, Riz Ahmed, Kristin Scott Thomas, Judi Dench, Vanessa Redgrave, Daniel Day-Lewis, Helena Bonham Carter, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Julie Walters, John Hurt, Emma Thompson, Jim Broadbent and, last year, Stephen Graham.

“Sophie’s celebrated career has seen her embrace both U.K. independent and Hollywood film and has taken her from the National Theatre to Broadway and back, with a significant body of acclaimed television roles in between,” the BIFAs organizers said in a statement. “Sophie’s work has been recognized by, amongst others, BIFA, BAFTA, the Academy, Tony, Olivier, Screen Actors Guild and Emmy Awards.”

The actor will receive the award at the Bifas ceremony held this Sunday, December 8, at the Roundhouse in London.

Lena Dunham is set to bring the rise and fall of Ftx founder Sam Bankman-Fried to the screen for an upcoming Apple Original film in partnership with A24. Dunham will adapt the screenplay from Michael Lewis’ New York Times bestselling book, “Going Infinite: The Rise and Fall of a New Tycoon.”

Lewis’ past books “Moneyball” and “The Big Short” were also previously adapted to the screen. The official description of “Going Infinite” reads: “The book tells the story of Ftx’s spectacular collapse and the enigmatic founder at its center. Lena Dunham is working on the script for a feature about Ftx founder Sam Bankman-Fried.

The Girls creator is on board to write a film adapting author Michael Lewis’ best-selling 2023 book Going Infinite: The Rise and Fall of a New Tycoon. Apple Studios and A24 are producing and developing the movie that is in early development.

Bankman-Fried founded Ftx in 2019, and the cryptocurrency exchange enjoyed a rise to prominence that included the company’s commercial running during the 2022 Super Bowl. Ftx boasted endorsements from such celebrities as Tom Brady, Stephen Curry and Larry David.

In March, the disgraced crypto entrepreneur was sentenced to 25 years in prison and forced to forfeit over $11 billion following his conviction on charges of fraud, conspiracy and money laundering. Bankman-Fried is appealing the conviction and sentence.

Apple and A24 are in early development on a film adaptation of the Michael Lewis book “Going Infinite: The Rise and Fall of a New Tycoon” with Lena Dunham attached to write the script, Variety has learned exclusively.

Apple Studios and A24 are co-developing and co-producing the film. “Going Infinite” delves into the spectacular ascension and equally spectacular implosion of the cryptocurrency exchange and hedge fund Ftx as well as its founder, Sam Bankman-Fried. The book was originally released in October 2023 and went on to become a New York Times bestseller.

Police detectives investigating Russell Brand regarding historic allegations of sex crimes have asked prosecutors to consider bringing criminal charges against the media personality, according to BBC.

The decision by law enforcement stems from a September 2023 investigative report by The Sunday Times, The Times and Channel 4 Dispatches, which includes testimony from four women who accused the Forgetting Sarah Marshall actor of sexual assault, rape and emotional abuse across a seven-year period at the height of his fame in 2006-2013. One of the women, none of whom know each other and the majority of whom spoke on the condition of anonymity, was 16 at the time of the offense. With everything going the way it is in the world right now, we’re laughing to keep less cheery emotions at bay. At least this bizarre, still-very-much-in-progress century has already produced a slew of spectacular, silly, snarky, and cynical comedies: ready to fire up whenever you need a serotonin burst or distraction thanks to the ever-growing cadre of streaming services.

The pandemic may be in the rearview for the U.S. federal government, but the specter of war, a tortured economy, and human rights issues across the globe have occupied the minds of many instead. So, in desperate need of some humor, we thought it was more important than ever to give our Greatest Comedies of the 21st Century list, originally published in 2017, yet another rethink. Since the list was originally published, we’ve expanded it to 90 entries, including titles released since then that deserved including and other titles we somehow overlooked the first time.

Ever since Phoebe Waller-River’s Fleabag became a sensation, there have been tons of female-oriented stories being experimented with, with women as the leads giving commentary about their lives to the camera. The breaking of the fourth wall has become the norm in basically every show or movie of this genre. The only good thing about such content is that female-driven stories are on the rise. Catherine Called Birdy and The Good House are examples of stories being told from a female perspective. Queenie, however, is something similar that is based on a young girl in her twenties navigating through trauma and life. Based on the novel of the same name, the miniseries was created for Channel 4 and Hulu by the author Candice Carty-Williams.

Queenie Jenkins is a young social media assistant with a local news website who was in a relationship with Tom, who had begun to have issues with her personality.

Bella Ramsey is opening up about the struggles they faced as a child actor in Hollywood.

The Last of Us star told The Independent, in an interview shared online Saturday, that they “didn’t like the separation” they noticed between kids and adult performers.

“The thing I hated the most was being patronized,” Ramsey explained. “I didn’t like the fact that I could only be on set for a certain amount of time, and had to go and do tutoring. I get why the hours protections for child actors are phenomenally important — but I hated feeling like I was lesser or separate from the adult cast.”

Though Ramsey turned 20 years old earlier this year, they still find themselves cast as younger teens in projects, including as Lyanna Mormont in Game of Thrones, Birdy in Catherine Called Birdy and Ellie Williams in The Last of Us, opposite Pedro Pascal.

Lena Dunham’s new comedy series will be called Too Much, which is currently in production for Netflix, here are the details.

Lena Dunham made her mark as a creative powerhouse early in her career, with the gargantuan success of her comedy drama Girls, which ran for six seasons on HBO between 2012 and 2017.

She then successfully transitioned to feature films, writing and directing Tiny Furniture, Sharp Stick and, most recently, Catherine Called Birdy. She then adapted Julia Davis’ superb dark comedy Camping in America, also for HBO. It ran for a single season in 2018.

Too Much is now the second show Dunham has created, alongside her husband Luis Felber.

Cara Ogburn, artistic director of Oriental Theater overseer Milwaukee Film, brainstormed the idea in response to the requirement that theaters can only show “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” Thursdays through Sundays.

Period pieces are hard to come by because they require high budgets, studios willing to take risks, and every detail to be one hundred percent accurate and authentic. From exact locations to extravagant costumes, dialect training for actors, and props, pulling a period piece off on a shoestring budget is nearly impossible.

With the entertainment industry only starting to be more inclusive and take risks on female directors, only so many female-directed period pieces exist. Many great films come from great books which feature plenty of women leads. When men direct films about women, they tend to lack authenticity. As these movies show, given the opportunity, women directors make great movies and bring a refreshing perspective to the screen.
