Stumbling upon this 2024 thriller titled "Dead Sea" by random chance, and never having heard about it, I opted to give the movie a chance. I have to admit that the movie's synopsis actually sounded interesting enough.
However, having just sat through the entire 88 minutes that the movie ran for, I was left with an overwhelming sensation of 'was that really it?' when the movie came to an end. The movie starts out quite nicely, with writer and director Phil Volken pushing the movie's momentum forward pretty early on. But there was just something fundamentally important missing from the movie's narrative, and it sort of became bland and irrelevant towards the last quarter of the movie.
The movie has a very small cast ensemble, but leading actress Isabel Gravitt did carry the movie well enough with her performance. I wasn't familiar with the cast ensemble in the movie. The acting performances by the cast were good.
There was a little bit of violence in the movie, but nothing noteworthy. "Dead Sea" was not a movie that relied heavily on special effects, and whatever effects were in the movie were actually fair.
"Dead Sea" is by no means a movie that I will return to watch a second time. Nor is it a movie that I will openly recommend people to rush out and get to watch.
My rating of writer and director Phil Volken's 2024 movie lands on a generous four out of ten stars.

Jays and Tessa (played by Isabel Gravitt and Genneya Walton) decide to go on an ocean trip from Florida to the Bahamas (and so, crossing into international waters and then an entirely different country) on a couple of jet skis with a couple of guys they barely know. That's not very smart - so, while of course you don't want to fall into a "blame the victim"" mentality, it's OK to think of the writers: "This is the best you could come up with?" Things don't go well, of course. The boys end up dead and the girls fall into the clutches of some very evil people after a horrific collision between the two jet skis.
There's lots of pointless filler in this - surprising since its run time is only 1:27, but true. But the basic problem here is that it's a "Suspense" movie that lacks much in the way of suspense. It's a time waster that feels like a waste of time. Gravitt and Walton are OK, but no better than that. The movie is dry; It fails to engage on any level.
It feels like a story that's been told a thousand times before, with each time just needing a bit of retweaking. It isn't awful. It just isn't necessary. (4/10)

One of those films that starts off looking a bit like some cheesy coastal teenage love story, but seems that the movie crew really got into this story as the movie goes on and the tension builds. I love coming across a movie that looks like nothing but ends up with me cheering at the TV 😁
The first 20 minutes or so, although seeming a little tacky, was obviously done on purpose to intensify the story beyond. After a (maybe little far fetched) accident at sea, the tension really builds and continues to do so.
There are quite a few points where I just thought, "no way, that's..." and then I'm sucked back in, it's a real grower, worth a watch 🙌

If you can "ignore" the begin of this movie and parts of the end, the movie is pretty good actually. ENJOY
The begin is super teenager dumb, classic two friends when one of them is in a bad time of his life and the another one give a bracelet friendship bla bla bla
But they will do a adventure together and everything will change.....
And I will tell you almost everything here about this beginning part for you who are reading don't give up when u are watching if you really like this kind of survival movie...
When the action and the tension starts, the movie change for a really good movie to the gender.
Everything change: the acting turns in to a better one, looks like almost the directing or photography change.
And for the and, well let's say: the movie could be 5 minutos less.

Directed by Phil Volken, Dead Sea is a 2024 American crime-horror film that immerses viewers in a suspenseful tale set on the open ocean. The story follows Kaya (Isabel Gravitt) and her friends Tessa (Genneya Walton) and Xander, whose jet ski adventure turns tragic after a fatal accident. Stranded at sea, they are rescued by a seemingly benevolent fishing vessel captain, only to discover that their savior harbors a chilling secret.
Positive Aspects: I. Atmospheric Setting: The film effectively utilizes its maritime setting to build tension and a sense of isolation, contributing to the overall suspense.
II. Lead Performance: Isabel Gravitt delivers a compelling performance as Kaya, capturing the character's vulnerability and resilience in the face of mounting terror.
Negative Aspects: I. Predictable Plot: Critics have noted that the narrative follows familiar tropes of the genre, with plot twists that can be seen coming.
II. Character Development: Some reviews point out that supporting characters lack depth, making it challenging for audiences to form strong connections with them.
Final Verdict:
Dead Sea offers a suspenseful maritime horror experience with a strong lead performance and a tense atmosphere. However, its reliance on genre conventions and underdeveloped supporting characters may leave some viewers desiring a more original and emotionally engaging story. Fans of ocean-bound thrillers might find it a worthwhile watch, but those seeking innovative storytelling may find it lacking.
