Ty Simpkins in La noche del demonio (2010)
Insidious 6 may be directed by Jacob Chase
Ty Simpkins in La noche del demonio (2010)
Back in January of 2022, we heard that Insidious franchise creator James Wan was producing a “Back to the Future meets Aliens” project that was set to be written and directed by Jeremy Slater, creator of the The Exorcist television series and head writer on the Marvel / Disney+ show Moon Knight. As the Wan / Blumhouse collaboration Insidious: The Red Door, the fifth film in that series, made its way out into the world last year, it was revealed that Slater’s movie was a spin-off called Thread: An Insidious Tale, which had Mandy Moore (This Is Us) and Kumail Nanjiani (Eternals) on board to star in it. That movie never seemed to go into production, but last year Sony announced an August 29, 2025 release date for the next Insidious movie – not Thread, but Insidious 6. That project hasn’t gone into production yet, either. So it wasn’t a surprise to hear that...

Bad Boy: Ke Huy Quan and Lili Reinhart to star in a fresh and bizarre serial killer horror film told from a dog’s perspective
Image
One of the more exciting projects heading to Berlin’s EFM (European Film Market) festival next week is Bad Boy, a genre-bending horror film starring Ke Huy Quan and Lili Reinhart. Keeping Bad Boy on a leash during the fest is the film’s producer, Dave Caplan, who produced last year’s chilling thriller Longlegs and M3GAN with Divide/Conquer’s Adam Hendricks and Greg Gilreath.

Bad Boy stars former Goonie and Oscar-winner Ke Huy Quan and Lili Reinhart. Jacob Chase is directing the peculiar feature from a script by Travis Braun. According to Deadline‘s exclusive report, Bad Boy “charts a young woman’s fight to escape a deadly serial killer through the eyes of man’s best friend, his faithful dog.” Huh?! While Quan and Reinhart’s contracts are signed, sealed, and delivered, the production continues searching for a dog co-star, which Deadline hears will be a terrier.

Interview with Marja Lewis Ryan
Very few first-time filmmakers get to see their work in front of more than a few friends or family members, let alone the elite crowds that grace the Sundance and Slamdance Film Festivals, but that’s exactly what Marja Lewis Ryan, writer, co-producer and co-star of The Four-Faced Liar has just experienced.

Just after the mania of Sundance 2010, the newcomer to the silver screen (and self-proclaimed “theater kid”) talked to us about the film and the festival experience from the other side of the aisle.

AfterEllen.com: So how was the experience, going to Sundance and Slamdance?

Marja Lewis Ryan: It was unbelievable. We were talking about it — I don’t know what we were expecting necessarily, but anything that we thought was going to happen — happened ten times over [laughs]. We had this publicist, Jim Dobson — he did the publicity for Buried with Ryan Reynolds. So basically, everywhere that Ryan was asked to go,...

Review of "The Four-Faced Liar"
Steeped in the hipster glow of Slamdance recognition (the ultimate in truly indie street cred), The Four-Faced Liar is a romantic comedy/drama for the gen Y crowd. Writer Marja Lewis Ryan adapted her own play for the screen, co-produced, and stars in the film, which features a lesbian romance at the center of its examination of 20-something relationships.

We begin with introductions all around. Trip (Todd Kubrak) is a cool, New Jersey-bred literature major that lives in a fabulously grungy New York City apartment with Bridget (Marja Lewis Ryan), an equally cool, womanizing lesbian with a real thing for Emily Bronte. In fact, we meet our heroine as she sits on a toilet, smoking a cigarette, a copy of Wuthering Heights in hand.

Along with Trip’s girlfriend Chloe (Liz Osborn), they meet a small town couple — Greg (Daniel Carlise) and Molly (Emily Peck, a dead ringer for Scarlett Johansson...

Slamdance 2010 Line-up Announced
Slamdance, which runs concurrently with Park City’s Sundance Film Festival, has announced its 2010 line-up, and there are several choices that look to make genre fans sit up and take notice.

Variety provided the names of the ten narrative and eight documentary feature films that are, in the spirit of the fest’s motto, “by filmmakers, for filmmakers.” Although not all of them are horror related, in the interest of keeping you guys fully informed on all the latest indie happenings (and because some of the docs just sound so damn interesting with topics like William Burroughs and Bolivian women wrestlers!), the full list follows:

Narrative Competition:

Cummings Farm (Andrew Drazek) - Comedy about three couples who try group sex at a lakeside strawberry farm, naively hoping it will lead to enlightenment; with Laura Silverman.

Slamdance 2010 lineup includes Irish Pa awesomeness One Hundred Mornings
What's that? You can't wait to hear about the Irish post apocalyptic film One Hundred Mornings? Well you don't have to because we already have a review of it right here! Our own Alan Maxwell called it an "uncomfortably realistic vision of the breakdown of society." Yeah, it's good.

So continuing, part of the Slamdance lineup has been announced and it's got quite a few films we've featured.

Want something horrible in the forest? How about YellowBrickRoad?

Or maybe some William Burroughs? How about William S Burroughs: A Man Within?

Yup, the lineup for one of my favorite festivals is looking mighty fine as usual, and we'll be bringing you more shortly.

Partial lineup after the break!

Slamdance Announces Competition Films - 18 Films Selected From 5,000 Submissions
Adam Busch in Cummings Farm (2009)
Slamdance, Sundance’s indie little brother, has announced the 18 films that will be playing in competition next month. While the economy might be slowing down, there was no shortage of submissions, as Slamdance reports they had 5,000 films vying for a spot in the Festival. Of the 18 films in competition, ten are narrative, eight are documentaries, and eleven are world premieres.

“The quality of indie filmmaking is getting higher while productions costs are getting lower,” said Slamdance prexy and co-founder Peter Baxter. “Far apart from the apparent industry downturn, there appears a great sense of what is possible rather than impossible with our submissions.”
