Liked Johnny H after a romantic drama " Love designer". Here the romance between him/capt. Of the Chinese military/special forces & a military hospital resident doctor is not as memorable as one hope to be.

Their relationship was ok but Johnny H is really good, he shows all the emotions needed in different situations. He portrays the necessary chemistry. The female lead is ok, just overboard at times. Hoping for a more swoonworthy & elaborated ending between the 2.

What is sweet & cute is the supporting couple, the lieutenant & the capt. Younger sister/cousin. The way he values her, teach her, loved her are just so sweet & when he died it was so sad. The relationship between the 2 is adorable. He accepts her regardless the circumstances!

What is exciting & interesting are the missions, the fights, the chase of the special forces! It was so good!

The rest are just extras. It was either a hit or miss for some but if you like military action romance, this is one to watch!

This was very well written and scripted. There's a lot emotions and life decisions happening when your in a military profession as a soldier or doctor and this series displays it well. Most scenes take place either at the military camp, hospital, or police station with lots of twists. It got so intense around episode 37 I had to take a break. Just great, real like human stories fighting the everyday challenges and joys of life if you like the military-doctor theme. Would love to see a series 2 - actors were very well casted, music was beautiful.

My Dear Guardian is a 2021 Chinese military romance drama that pairs a stoic elite soldier with a sweet but principled military doctor in a story intended to fuse national service, love, and duty. On paper, it has the makings of a compelling watch: the tension of military life, opposites-attract chemistry, and high-stakes missions. In execution, however, the drama falters under the weight of its own wooden writing and stilted performances, producing a narrative that feels both emotionally undercooked and awkwardly nationalistic.

The writing and acting strive for two dimensions - and barely get there. Characters often speak in declarative, emotionless lines that sound like they were written by an AI trained on military recruitment posters. This lack of naturalism strips the show of any emotional credibility. For a series that aims to portray human connection amidst life-and-death circumstances, My Dear Guardian feels bafflingly sterile. Chemistry between the leads is minimal, despite the show repeatedly insisting that their relationship is blossoming. It's as if we're watching a middle-school play about adults pretending to be in love, where every romantic gesture is choreographed with the subtlety of a government PSA.

The lead actors, Johnny Huang as special ops soldier Liang Muze and Li Qin as Dr. Xia Chu, are both physically appealing and camera-friendly - but their interactions lack warmth, spontaneity, or believable friction. Li Qin, in particular, tries to inject humanity into her role, but the script gives her little room to breathe. Conversations are expository, and emotional moments are telegraphed rather than felt. Even scenes that should bristle with tension - a surgical emergency or a hostage standoff - are deflated by formulaic pacing and the relentless need to keep everything sanitized and ideologically upright.

This show seems best suited for a teenage audience with a penchant for uniforms and slow-burn fantasy romance. However, even the Twilight demographic might expect more emotional payoff than what My Dear Guardian delivers. At least Twilight, for all its flaws, made you feel something, however melodramatic. Here, romantic developments are clinical, passionless, and stripped of anything resembling human messiness or urgency.

There's also an unavoidable sense that the drama was crafted to serve as soft propaganda more than as heartfelt storytelling. Military life is portrayed as noble, orderly, and unambiguously virtuous. The soldiers are heroic, the doctors are angelic, and even conflicts are neatly resolved in ways that feel more like moral parables than narrative arcs. While that might appeal to a domestic audience steeped in patriotic tropes, it renders the story lifeless for international viewers accustomed to richer, more complex storytelling.

Mainland creators - respectfully - take a page from your Korean drama cousins. K-dramas have proven time and again that you can balance patriotism with genuine character depth, emotional vulnerability, and cinematic polish. Shows like Descendants of the Sun managed to blend military drama with romance in a way that was both glossy and touching, never forgetting that at the heart of every story is human connection. In contrast, My Dear Guardian feels like a PowerPoint presentation on loyalty, love, and honor - with none of the emotional immersion.

To be fair, My Dear Guardian has its fans. The show delivers steady visuals, polished sets, and a clean, professional look. For viewers who want a slow, conservative, romance-without-complications experience, this might be just enough. But for anyone seeking emotional nuance, natural dialogue, or chemistry that actually crackles - there are far better options, both in the Chinese drama world and beyond.
