Mike Peters, the lead singer of Welsh rock band The Alarm, has passed away following a decades-long battle with cancer. He was 66.

Mike Peters was first diagnosed with lymphoma in 1995. While he initially looked to be headed towards recovery, he would later be diagnosed with chronic lymphocytic leukaemia.

It was around this time that Mike Peters helped found Love, Hope, Strength, an organization meant to help those with cancer and leukaemia. In a 2013 interview, Peters said, “The goal is and always will be to keep fighting cancer. Unfortunately, it’s like trying to hit a moving target at all times. The disease keeps changing and is as human as you and I. It also has a survival instinct all of its own and so we will probably never reach the ultimate goal of eradicating it, but if Lhsf can help one person to win and get back to health then that shall be our goal.

It seems Sony Pictures may have found their new Lisbeth Salander in The Crown star Claire Foy, despite reports from March that both Scarlet Johansson and Natalie Portman were up for the role. Claire Foy is reportedly in early talks, but she may not be set quite yet. Insiders claim that, while Claire Foy has in fact been offered the role, there are still scheduling issues that need to be worked out before she can sign on.

The Hollywood Reporter reveals that this coveted role went down to both Claire Foy and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story star Felicity Jones. Former "Harry Potter" star Emma Watson, who appeared in two of the summer's very best films -- "The Bling Ring" and "This is the End" -- as two very different characters, is continuing to make bold career choices. The 23-year-old actress is next set to star in "Your Voice in My Head," the movie adaptation of Emma Forrest's bestselling memoir about her struggles with bipolar disorder.

There was a brief flurry of activity last year around the adaptation of Emma Forrest’s book Your Voice In My Head, and some excitement from Harry Potter fans at the thought of director David Yates and Hermione herself, Emma Watson teaming back up again. Then Yates moved on and all went quiet, but the film appears to be back on its feet with Watson still attached.Tanner Hall co-director Francesca Gregorini is the woman taking on the project now, following its time in development hell. While Warner Bros. had been backing the film when Yates and Watson seemed likely to collaborate, but now it has slipped into the indie-financing world via Benaroya Pictures.The plot finds a young woman living what seems to be the perfect, party-filled life in New York, before attempting suicide. She starts going to counselling with a selfless psychiatrist who is himself dealing with terminal cancer.

Write this one down on your calenders, it's a must watch, one of the best indie films of the year. Cinedigm has announced a release date for the film Short Term 12, directed by Destin Cretton, which premiered at SXSW 2013 and won both the Audience and Grand Jury Award. The Sundance London Film and Music Festival returns to the capital this weekend and the lineup of film and music events looks to build on the solid foundation established last year.

It’s an exciting time for Independent film with the trailblazing success of the Sundance festival in Utah sparking off dozens of initiatives, the Raindance festival is a notable and vibrant example, and Sundance London is looking to do more than replicating the success of its American cousin.

When we reported on the lineup we singled out Michael Winterbottom’s The Look of Love, a biopic of self-styled King of Soho Paul Raymond, and Shane Carruth’s Upstream Color, his highly anticipated follow-up film to 2004′s Primer. However there are many more excellent films playing across the various strands and we wanted to shine our spotlight on some of the films to look forward to.

Part of this year's Sundance UK line-up is the indie drama Emanuel And The Truth About Fishes, by director Francesca Gregorini (Tanner Hall). It  stars Jessica Biel, Kaya Scodelario, Alfred Molina and Frances O'Connor. A good time for a studio to get a trailer online then, and look, here's one just arrived! A bit of a Stoker vibe there, we're feeling, although it's obviously just coincidental since the films were in parallel production. A slightly chilly psychological drama, it's about troubled teen Emanuel (Scodelario), whose mother died in childbirth, developing an obsession with neighbour Linda (Biel) for whom she helps babysit. Early reports about the film revealed that its general premise was something strange specifically to do with that baby, but since the trailer goes nowhere near the subject, that may constitute some sort of spoiler. Suffice to say that there's more going on in the film than is immediately apparent from the clip.

“Emmanuel and the Truth About Fishes” made its debut at Sundance in January, and with Sundance London taking place next week, it seems like the perfect time to debut a new trailer for the film. Starring rising British star Kaya Scodelario (who replaced Rooney Mara), Jessica Biel, Frances O’Connor and Alfred Molina, the film tells the story of Scodelario’s Emmanuel, who becomes obsessed with a mysterious new neighbour who bears a resemblance to her dead mother. Francesca Gregorini (“Tanner Hall”) wrote and directed the thriller, and when we caught it back at Sundance we gave it a C- grade for being a movie that fits almost perfectly into the mold of a cliché Sundance film. Exclusive: Hours before her film makes its Sundance debut, director Francesca Gregorini has signed with CAA. She makes her solo directing debut with Emanuel And The Truth About Fishes. She wrote the film, which premieres in the U.S. Dramatic Competition at Sundance and stars Kaya Scodelario and Jessica Biel. Gregorini previously co-directed Tanner Hall with Tatiana Von Furstenberg. That film starred Rooney Mara and played Toronto in 2009. Gregorini is managed by Schiff Company’s Kenny Goodman and her lawyer is Greg Slewett.

A clip has landed for Francesca Gregorini's Sundance competition entry "Emanuel and the Truth About Fishes," starring Kaya Scodelario ("Wuthering Heights," "Skins") as a young woman who begins a friendship with a neighbor, Linda (Jessica Biel), who looks uncannily like her late mother. The dream-like quality of the clip matches the Sundance program notes on the film, which promise that the film "vascillates between surrealism and realism" and that "Emanuel must take a courageous journey to enter her dream and help extract Linda from hers." This is director Gregorini's first solo helming venture, having previously co-directed 2009's "Tanner Hall" with Tatiana von Furstenberg. "Emanuel and the Truth About Fishes" premieres in Park City on January 18.

Italian born Francesca Gregorini, director of "Emanuel and The Truth About Fishes," developed her love for filmmaking while studying Theater and Semiotics at Brown. After selling pilots to HBO and Paramount she co-wrote and co-directed Toronto 2009 entry "Tanner Hall," starring a then unknown Rooney Mara. Emanuel and the Truth About Fishes was announced last night as one of the sixteen films premiering at Sundance in the Us Dramatic Competition category, and with a cast led by Kaya Scodelario (Moon) and Jessica Biel (The Illusionist), it is certainly one to look forward to.

Written and directed by Francesca Gregorini (Tanner Hall), the film sees rising young star Scodelario take the lead as the eponymous Emanuel.

“Emanuel, a troubled girl, becomes preoccupied with her mysterious, new neighbor, who bears a striking resemblance to her dead mother. In offering to babysit her newborn, Emanuel unwittingly enters a fragile, fictional world, of which she becomes the gatekeeper.”

Boarding schools seem to be a hotbed of sexual experimentation, at least that's how it seems from watching them on film. Interestingly, it's a trend that doesn't seem to be going away anytime soon. We've seen all-girls dormitories as a plot device since the 1930s, and yet there have been three released in the last year alone. If there’s a theme to 2011’s crop of films featuring lesbian/bi women, it’s that this was a very good year for emerging voices. First time and younger filmmakers made a mark in huge ways this year, providing everything from spellbinding documentaries (No Look Pass), heart-wrenching drama (Pariah, Break My Fall, Circumstance), and fresh comedy (Jamie and Jessie are Not Together, Codependent Lesbian Space Alien Seeks Same). Pair that with the quality coming from established filmmakers like Celine Sciamma (Tomboy), and you have a year marked by the presence of strong, unique voices.

Hard Hitters

Nowhere is that strength of vision more prominent than in the year’s dramas. Well-meaning (but tired) melodramas were drowned out by clear-eyed, nuanced filmmaking, most evident in Pariah, the story of a young African-American woman struggling with her identity, and Circumstance, which features the romance between two teenaged girls in Iran.
