Despedida de soltero (1984)
Mike Peters, The Alarm frontman, dies after 30-year cancer battle
Despedida de soltero (1984)
Mike Peters, the lead singer of Welsh rock band The Alarm, has passed away following a decades-long battle with cancer. He was 66.

Mike Peters was first diagnosed with lymphoma in 1995. While he initially looked to be headed towards recovery, he would later be diagnosed with chronic lymphocytic leukaemia.

It was around this time that Mike Peters helped found Love, Hope, Strength, an organization meant to help those with cancer and leukaemia. In a 2013 interview, Peters said, “The goal is and always will be to keep fighting cancer. Unfortunately, it’s like trying to hit a moving target at all times. The disease keeps changing and is as human as you and I. It also has a survival instinct all of its own and so we will probably never reach the ultimate goal of eradicating it, but if Lhsf can help one person to win and get back to health then that shall be our goal.

Girl in the Spider's Web Targets Claire Foy as Lisbeth Salander
Claire Foy at an event for Temporada de brujas (2011)
It seems Sony Pictures may have found their new Lisbeth Salander in The Crown star Claire Foy, despite reports from March that both Scarlet Johansson and Natalie Portman were up for the role. Claire Foy is reportedly in early talks, but she may not be set quite yet. Insiders claim that, while Claire Foy has in fact been offered the role, there are still scheduling issues that need to be worked out before she can sign on.

The Hollywood Reporter reveals that this coveted role went down to both Claire Foy and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story star Felicity Jones. It's possible that Felicity Jones may be offered the role if these scheduling conflicts can't be worked out, but that has yet to be confirmed. Claire Foy has also been fielding interest to star in Universal's biopic First Man, starring Ryan Gosling as American astronaut Neil Armstrong, although it...

Review: The Truth About Emanuel Floats To The Surface
The sophomore film by writer/director Francesca Gregorini, following 2009's Tanner Hall, revolves around Emanuel (Kaya Scodelario), a precocious high school girl who carries on her shoulders the self-placed burden of her mother's childbirth death. For Emanuel, life is a struggle to find herself, despite feeling like she doesn't belong due to her unjust welcome into life. As Emanuel's world view gets darker and more melancholic, a mysterious woman named Linda (Jessica Biel) moves in next door. She is a single mother who needs help with her baby, and she and Emanuel quickly become close -- almost mother/daughter close. This worries Emanuel's father, Dennis (Alfred Molina) and Janice (Frances O'Connor); Emanuel's trying-too-hard step-mom. However, as the story unfolds, the relationship between Emanuel and Linda grows and...

Writer/Director Francesca Gregorini Talks The Truth About Emanuel, the Film’s Themes, and More; Reveals Your Voice In My Head Not Moving Forward
From writer/director Francesca Gregorini, the indie drama The Truth About Emanuel tells the story of the troubled Emanuel (Kaya Scodelario), who becomes preoccupied with her mysterious new neighbor, Linda (Jessica Biel). In offering to babysit her newborn, Emanuel unwittingly enters a world that blurs the line of fantasy and reality, and shows just how dangerous secrets can be. During this exclusive phone interview with Collider, filmmaker Francesca Gregorini talked about how this film came about, the themes she wanted to explore in the story, what led her to Kaya Scodelario, what sold her on Jessica Biel, how the final product is a leaner version of the script, the importance of giving a dark story like this some hope, and why the title of the film was changed. She also talked about how she’s looking to direct a film from someone else’s script, but that she could never...

Emma Watson Will Hear Your Voice In My Head Again
Undoubtedly one of the most talented and exciting young actresses working today, Emma Watson has blossomed in her post-Potter career, taking on diverse roles in many different ambitious, compelling projects. However, her greatest challenge yet as an actress may be just around the corner, with the news that Watson has taken on the lead role in Your Voice In My Head, an adaptation of Emma Forrest’s bestselling memoir, which charts the troubled British novelist’s struggles with bipolar disorder and a selfless psychiatrist’s attempts to save her from self-destruction.

In an official press release announcing Watson’s casting, International Film Trust President Ariel Veneziano stated:

Starting her career so young and literally growing up in front of us, Emma Watson has established herself as a sophisticated and talented actress. She is perfect for this role.

Since the Harry Potter franchise concluded in 2011, Watson has certainly faired the best of the series’ three leads.

Emma Watson in 'Your Voice in My Head' Again But for New Director
Over a year and a half ago, Harry Potter franchise director David Yates was slated to reteam with star Emma Watson in an adaptation of writer Emma Forrest's memoir, Your Voice in My Head. 'Your Voice in My Head': Emma Watson to Star as Bipolar Writer
Hermione has officially left the building. Former "Harry Potter" star Emma Watson, who appeared in two of the summer's very best films -- "The Bling Ring" and "This is the End" -- as two very different characters, is continuing to make bold career choices. The 23-year-old actress is next set to star in "Your Voice in My Head," the movie adaptation of Emma Forrest's bestselling memoir about her struggles with bipolar disorder.

What's interesting about the project is that Watson was attached once before: Earlier this year, when it was going to be helmed by four-time "Harry Potter" director David Yates, she was on board. But when Yates dropped out, so did Watson, and Emily Blunt was cast in her place. Blunt later split with the production as well, leaving Watson able to return, this time under the direction of "Tanner Hall" filmmaker Francesca Gregorini.

The film's various international...

Emma Watson Rejoins Your Voice In My Head; Francesca Gregorini to Direct
The lead casting for Your Voice in My Head has come full circle. The adaptation of the Emma Forrest memoir was initially set to mark the next project for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows director David Yates, and he quickly signed Emma Watson to star. The film offers up a meaty lead role as it chronicles Forrest’s troublesome and self-harming behavior, as well as her relationship with her psychiatrist. Yates subsequently dropped out of the project as a result of scheduling issues, and then Watson was replaced by Emily Blunt earlier this year. Now it has been announced that Watson has rejoined the project in the lead role, with Francesca Gregorini (Tanner Hall) onboard to direct. Stanley Tucci was previously in talks for the coveted male lead, but it appears that he is no longer involved with the project. Production is now finally set to begin on November...

‘Ain’t Them Bodies Saints’ Interview: Rooney Mara’s Repertoire Continues to Grow
Rooney Mara has been in the business for quite some time, but there’s no denying that in 2009, her career took off, to say the least. She appeared in the adaptation of Youth in Revolt, led Tanner Hall, then starred in the remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street, had a small part in the Oscar-winning The Social Network, earned her own Best Actress nomination for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and this year, brought us Side Effects. Currently she has both Ain’t Them Bodies Saints and Her on the way; even more impressive? Every single film on this list is so strikingly different.

Tribeca Film and Well Go Snap Up 'Emanuel and the Truth About Fishes,' Starring Jessica Biel and Kaya Scodelario
Tanner Hall (2009)
Tribeca Film and Well Go USA have announced the co-acquisition of North American rights to Francesca Gregorini's psychological thriller "Emanuel and the Truth About Fishes," which stars Jessica Biel and Kaya Scodelario ("Wuthering Heights"). The film premiered at Sundance in January. In the film, a troubled teen girl (Scodelario) becomes fixated on her neighbor (Biel), who bears a striking resemblance to her dead mother. Alfred Molina ("An Education") and Frances O'Connor ("The Importance of being Earnest") also star. The Sundance program notes for the film describe it as "vacillating between surrealism and realism," as Scodelario's character enters a dreamlike, uncanny world. Our Pick of the Films Playing at Sundance London 2013
The Sundance London Film and Music Festival returns to the capital this weekend and the lineup of film and music events looks to build on the solid foundation established last year.

It’s an exciting time for Independent film with the trailblazing success of the Sundance festival in Utah sparking off dozens of initiatives, the Raindance festival is a notable and vibrant example, and Sundance London is looking to do more than replicating the success of its American cousin.

When we reported on the lineup we singled out Michael Winterbottom’s The Look of Love, a biopic of self-styled King of Soho Paul Raymond, and Shane Carruth’s Upstream Color, his highly anticipated follow-up film to 2004′s Primer. However there are many more excellent films playing across the various strands and we wanted to shine our spotlight on some of the films to look forward to.

All the films playing...

Jessica Biel and Kaya Scodelario in The Truth About Emanuel (2013)
Emanuel & The Truth About Fishes Trailer
Jessica Biel and Kaya Scodelario in The Truth About Emanuel (2013)
Part of this year's Sundance UK line-up is the indie drama Emanuel And The Truth About Fishes, by director Francesca Gregorini (Tanner Hall). It  stars Jessica Biel, Kaya Scodelario, Alfred Molina and Frances O'Connor. A good time for a studio to get a trailer online then, and look, here's one just arrived! A bit of a Stoker vibe there, we're feeling, although it's obviously just coincidental since the films were in parallel production. A slightly chilly psychological drama, it's about troubled teen Emanuel (Scodelario), whose mother died in childbirth, developing an obsession with neighbour Linda (Biel) for whom she helps babysit. Early reports about the film revealed that its general premise was something strange specifically to do with that baby, but since the trailer goes nowhere near the subject, that may constitute some sort of spoiler. Suffice to say that there's more going on in the film than is immediately apparent from the clip.

Watch: Trailer For 'Emmanuel and the Truth About Fishes' Starring Jessica Biel & Kaya Scodelario
“Emmanuel and the Truth About Fishes” made its debut at Sundance in January, and with Sundance London taking place next week, it seems like the perfect time to debut a new trailer for the film. Starring rising British star Kaya Scodelario (who replaced Rooney Mara), Jessica Biel, Frances O’Connor and Alfred Molina, the film tells the story of Scodelario’s Emmanuel, who becomes obsessed with a mysterious new neighbour who bears a resemblance to her dead mother. Francesca Gregorini (“Tanner Hall”) wrote and directed the thriller, and when we caught it back at Sundance we gave it a C- grade for being a movie that fits almost perfectly into the mold of a cliché Sundance film. Maybe that won’t hold the film back as much in the UK though with Sundance London only being in its second year, and because lead actress Kaya Scodelario is someone better known...

Watch This Mysterious And Obsessive Trailer For Jessica Biel's Emanuel And The Truth About FIshes
The tiny black font that is used for the credits in the above trailer for Francesca Gregorini.s Emanuel and the Truth About Fishes suggests a TV drama, or maybe even a children.s film based on its title, instead of a dark psychological thriller about mentally mistaken identity. It works really well, as the trailer tells its own story . almost a short film, really . and reveals its subject matter with a proper pacing that I hope holds true within the film itself. Holy shit, people, this font of this trailer.s credits may have moved me. Emanuel and the Truth About Fishes is Gregorini.s second film, following 2009.s female coming of age drama Tanner Hall, which she co-wrote and co-directed with Tatiana von Furstenberg. I suppose Emanuel is also coming of age, but it.s an age that happens to include one of the strangest cases of obsession...

Felicity Jones at an event for The Oscars (2015)
Touted by many as this year's Felicity Jones-type breakout at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival, relative newcomer Kaya Scodelario ("Wuthering Heights," TV's "Skins") gives it her all as the titular troubled character in the U.S. Dramatic contender, "Emanuel and the Truth About Fishes." In the coming-of-age drama, directed by "Tanner Hall" co-helmer Francesca Gregorini, Scodelario stars as a motherless young woman who takes a strange fascination to a new neighbor (Jessica Biel) who happens to resemble her dead mother. Little does Emanuel know that the woman next door harbors a huge secret. Biel, Scodelario and Gregorini sat down with Indiewire in Park City to discuss Gregorini's close ties to the material and Biel's sisterly love for her younger co-star.

Tanner Hall (2009)
Emanuel and the Truth About Fishes: Sundance Review
Tanner Hall (2009)
Park City – Following up her co-directed Tanner Hall debut, filmmaker Francesca Gregorini returns solo with an accomplished coming-of-age feature that adeptly combines both dramatic and fantasy elements. Gregorini’s assured technique to some extent glosses over a certain lack of narrative focus that may be overlooked by well-meaning audiences drawn into Emanuel’s predominantly feminine domain. The film will certainly charm on the festival circuit, although theatrical breakthrough will require unconventional marketing to preserve the disconcerting mystery central to the narrative. Emanuel (Kaya Scodelario), a troubled teen on the brink of adulthood, acts out her disappointment with

A clip has landed for Francesca Gregorini's Sundance competition entry "Emanuel and the Truth About Fishes," starring Kaya Scodelario ("Wuthering Heights," "Skins") as a young woman who begins a friendship with a neighbor, Linda (Jessica Biel), who looks uncannily like her late mother. The dream-like quality of the clip matches the Sundance program notes on the film, which promise that the film "vascillates between surrealism and realism" and that "Emanuel must take a courageous journey to enter her dream and help extract Linda from hers." This is director Gregorini's first solo helming venture, having previously co-directed 2009's "Tanner Hall" with Tatiana von Furstenberg. "Emanuel and the Truth About Fishes" premieres in Park City on January 18.

Meet the 2013 Sundance Filmmakers #14: Francesca Gregorini On The Hopeful Message Of 'Emanuel and The Truth About Fishes,' Starring Jessica Biel
Kaya Scodelario
Italian born Francesca Gregorini, director of "Emanuel and The Truth About Fishes," developed her love for filmmaking while studying Theater and Semiotics at Brown. After selling pilots to HBO and Paramount she co-wrote and co-directed Toronto 2009 entry "Tanner Hall," starring a then unknown Rooney Mara. Her latest, if well received in Park City, could make a star out of another unknown, Kaya Scodelario, who plays the titular character in the drama making its world premiere at the festival. The film also stars Jessica Biel and Alfred Molina. What It's About: "A troubled girl (Emanuel) becomes preoccupied with her mysterious new neighbor (Linda) who bears a striking resemblance to her dead mother. In offering to baby-sit Linda's newborn, Emanuel unwittingly enters a fragile, fictional world, of which she becomes the gatekeeper." Citadel (2012)
Q&A: Welsh Rising Star Aneurin Barnard On the SXSW Winner 'Citadel' and What He Has In Common With Jessica Chastain
Citadel (2012)
If there was an acting award for versatility at this year's SXSW film festival, Welsh performer Aneurin Barnard would be the clear winner. In the Narrative Spotlight selection "Hunky Dory," he sang and acted opposite Minnie Driver as a hunky high-school student with a voice to melt hearts. And in the Midnighters film "Citadel" (winner of the Midnighters Audience Award), Barnard played a young father suffering from agoraphobia, fighting for survival after a pack of feral children attack him and his family. The latter horror-thriller comes out this Friday (go Here to see where it's playing). [Editor's Note: This interview originally ran during the 2012 SXSW Film Festival. "Citadel" opens in select theaters this Friday.] The actor recently wrapped shooting "Emanuel and the Truth About Fishes," directed by Francesca Gregorini ("Tanner Hall") and starring Jessica Biel and Alfred Molina. He also stars in the...

Kaya Scodelario in Wuthering Heights (2011)
Futures: 'Wuthering Heights' Breakout Kaya Scodelario On Working For Andrea Arnold and Breaking Boundaries With 'Skins'
Kaya Scodelario in Wuthering Heights (2011)
Why She's On Our Radar: Best known in the U.K. for her breakout turn as a troubled teen in the controversial hit series "Skins" (that spurred an MTV knockoff stateside), 20-year-old Kaya Scodelario makes a transfixing transition to the big screen in Andrea Arnold's radical take on "Wuthering Heights" (out October 5th at New York's Film Forum). Although this doesn't mark her first film -- she had bit parts in "Moon" and "Clash of the Titans" -- her role as Cathy, the heroine of "Wuthering Heights," marks her biggest yet. What's Next: She'll next be appearing in the Dakota Fanning-starring weepie "Now Is Good." Scodelario however told Indiewire that she's most excited her title role in "Emanuel and the Truth About Fishes." In the film, directed by "Tanner Hall" helmer Francesca Gregorini, and co-starring Jessica Biel and Alfred Molina, Scodelario stars as a troubled young...

The 8 Best Lesbian Boarding School Movies
Tags: The Moth DiariesTanner HallMachden in UniformLost & DeliriousAll I Wanna DoIMDb

Boarding schools seem to be a hotbed of sexual experimentation, at least that's how it seems from watching them on film. Interestingly, it's a trend that doesn't seem to be going away anytime soon. We've seen all-girls dormitories as a plot device since the 1930s, and yet there have been three released in the last year alone. Is it a coincidence that four out of eight of our Best Lesbian Boarding School Movies are directed and/or written by out women, two of which are said to be based on real life stories? Seems as if boarding schools might not be punishment as much as they are places to find your first love.

The HeyUGuys Cinema Guide: 24th August
I hope everyone has managed to contain their enthusiasm this week. I hope the weight of expectation hasn’t proven too heavy as you went about your week safe in the knowledge that this weekend, after all the waiting, after the weeks, nay months of expectation, the comedy double bill of the century was finally upon us.

Yes folks, it’s finally here, that weekend you had circled in your diary since before you can remember, it’s the weekend where both Keith Lemon: The Film and The Three Stooges are released into the world.

I imagine my rather poor attempt at cynical humour there wasn’t lost on anyone, but perhaps I shouldn’t be so quick to judge. One should never judge a cinematic book by its cover and these two movies could both be comedy gold for all we know. In the words of Principal Seymour Skinner…...

6 Actors Headed for the Top in 2012
It may be a fickle goal – corrupting, even – but there’s no question that for the vast majority of actors the top of the Hollywood tree is the place to be.

And so, as we roll into 2012, and a fresh calendar of veritable quality mixed liberally with garbage and chewing gum for the eyes, we’ll see new gems unearthed, giants fall and movie stars made. Using the power of prediction, and Wall Street style logical growth trajectory, here are six actors likely to be Kings and Queens of Cinema by this time next year. Watch this space.

6. Chris Hemsworth

Harshly described by some as Sam Worthington Mk. II, Aussie heartthrob Hemsworth has already cemented himself firmly in Hollywood minds as the dynamic new wave superhero Thor, having worked his way from soap operas to supporting roles in the likes of Star Trek and A Perfect Getaway, all the way...

Alfred Molina and Frances O’Connor Join Jessica Biel in ‘Emanuel and the Truth About Fishes’
Alfred Molina at an event for El aprendiz de brujo (2010)
I'm gradually becoming more interested in Francesca Gregorini's new film Emanuel and the Truth About Fishes. The film was once set to star Gregorini's Tanner Hall star Rooney Mara -- that film was made a bit before Mara was a big name -- and now features Kaya Scodelario as a girl who gets involved in a very strange family situation. The film just added four cast members: Alfred Molina, Frances O'Connor (A.I.), Jimmi Simpson (Zodiac), and Aneurin Barnard (Ironclad). They join Scodelario and Jessica Biel in the film about a woman who doesn't realize (or doesn't accept) that her baby is actually only a doll. Variety [1] gives a good description of the story: Emanuel (Scodelario) is "a troubled 17-year-old girl who babysits her new neighbor Linda's "baby," which is actually a very life-like doll. She goes along with the delusion while befriending Linda (Biel), who happens to be the...

Alfred Molina, Frances O’Connor, and Jimmi Simpson Join Emanuel And The Truth About Fishes
A number of actors have been added to the cast of Francesca Gregorini’s (Tanner Hall) indie Emanuel and the Truth About Fishes. The film stars Kaya Scodelario (Clash of the Titans) as a troubled 17-year-old named Emanuel who agrees to babysit her new neighbor Linda’s “baby”, though the baby turns out to actually be a life-like doll. “She goes along with the delusion while befriending Linda (Jessica Biel), who happens to be the splitting image of Emanuel’s late mother.” Now Alfred Molina (Spider-Man 2), Frances O’Connor (A.I. Artificial Intelligence), Jimmi Simpson (Date Night), and rising star Aneurin Barnard are set to join the cast. Hit the jump for more. Variety reports that Molina will play Emanuel’s father, O’Connor will play her stepmother, Simpson will play one of her co-workers, and Barnard will take on the role of her love interest. Rooney Mara was originally set as the title character,...

Alfred Molina And Three More Join Emanuel And The Truth About Fishes
With production set to begin on Emanuel and the Truth About Fishes at the end of the month, Francesca Gregorini is busy finding the supporting cast. For the followup to her debut Tanner Hall, which she co-wrote and co-directed with Tatiana von Furstenberg, the writer-director has just landed four actors to help bring the story of a doll babysitter to life. Yes, a babysitter for a doll. Interested? Already cast in the film are Jessica Biel in the role of Linda and Kaya Scodelario as the titular Emanuel. The story follows Emanuel, a troubled teenager who agrees to .babysit. her neighbor Linda.s baby, which is actually just life-like doll. Over time, Emanuel and Linda become closer, the latter being a spitting image of the former.s deceased mother. 2011 Year in Review: Movies
If there’s a theme to 2011’s crop of films featuring lesbian/bi women, it’s that this was a very good year for emerging voices. First time and younger filmmakers made a mark in huge ways this year, providing everything from spellbinding documentaries (No Look Pass), heart-wrenching drama (Pariah, Break My Fall, Circumstance), and fresh comedy (Jamie and Jessie are Not Together, Codependent Lesbian Space Alien Seeks Same). Pair that with the quality coming from established filmmakers like Celine Sciamma (Tomboy), and you have a year marked by the presence of strong, unique voices.

Hard Hitters

Nowhere is that strength of vision more prominent than in the year’s dramas. Well-meaning (but tired) melodramas were drowned out by clear-eyed, nuanced filmmaking, most evident in Pariah, the story of a young African-American woman struggling with her identity, and Circumstance, which features the romance between two teenaged girls in Iran.

As AfterEllen.

Jessica Biel Primed To Take Role in Emanuel and the Truth About Fishes
It may have a terribly off-putting title (and let’s face it, Ballistic: Ecks vs. Sever standard terrible) but ‘Emanuel and the Truth About Fishes’ backs that up with an even more off-putting premise.

Emanuel is a troubled 17-year-old girl who babysits her new neighbour Linda’s “baby,” which is actually a very life-like doll. She goes along with the delusion while befriending Linda, who happens to be the spitting image of her late mother.

After acting in Francseca Gregorini’s egregiously insufferable previous feature Tanner Hall newly appointed movie star Rooney Mara was slated to play the titular Emanuel before scheduling conflicts got in the way. Now Skins alumni Kaya Scodelario has stepped in and news is that Jessica Biel is in final talks to maniacally inhabit the shoes of the nutty neighbour.

Scodelario’s Emanuel was previously described as “a young, troubled woman who becomes obsessed with her mysterious,...

‘Emanuel and the Truth About Fishes’ to Reel in Jessica Biel
Jessica Biel is in final negotiations to join Kayla Scodelario (Skins) in the film Emanuel and the Truth About Fishes. According to Variety, writer/director Francseca Gregorini’s (Tanner Hall) film is about a pair of psychologically damaged young women who obsess and go crazy over life-like dolls. Biel will take the role of Linda and will play opposite Scodelario’s Emanuel. Gregorini had originally wanted to reunite with his Tanner Hall star, Rooney Mara (The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo), but scheduling got in the way.
