10 Best Rachel Brosnahan Movies & TV Shows, Ranked
Image
Witty and always prepared with a quip, Rachel Brosnahan has played a number of fierce, unconventional women over the course of her career. The Wisconsin-born actor made her film debut with the 2009 horror film "The Unborn," and since then, she's been a frequent face both in film and on television. Until recently, she's been best known for her Emmy-winning turn as Midge Maisel on "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel," but to boil her down to just that is to ignore all of the great roles she'd had leading up to the Amazon Prime Video show that made her a star.

And of course, that doesn't include her recent foray into the world of superheroes in "Superman," where she played the indomitable Lois Lane to David Corenswet's Clark Kent. Rachel Brosnahan is a multi-faceted performer who's equally adept with comedy and drama (she's even starred in a few plays on Broadway...

This 2015 Horror Movie Combines Folklore and History To Create a Searing Paranormal Nightmare Like No Other
Image
While folklore has a whimsical nature that has long been harvested for children’s stories, it’s also been translated into some of the darkest horror films of all time. Hollywood has long been fond of the grim-dark fairytale and the latest trend with these retellings has been playing with non-Christian mythology and texts. Since the early 2010s, there has been a noticeable uptick in horror movies focusing on Jewish folklore surrounding ghosts and possessions. Films like David S. Goyer’s 2009 The Unborn and Ole Bornedal’s 2012 The Possession all deal with the Jewish legend of the dybbuk. Dybbuks are malicious spirits that possess the living and in Marcin Wrona’s final project, 2015's Demon, dybbuks are used to prod at the post-war period in Poland.

10 Underrated Actors That Shine In B-Horror Movies
Image
It is not often that the best B-horror movies are complimented for their performances, despite the fact that they are often made or broken by them. An actor unable to commit fully to the project they are a part of can leave an otherwise enjoyable movie unremarkable. It does not even necessarily have to be a typically good performance, just one able to sell the viewer on the atmosphere and tone of a movie.

Horror movies in general struggle to garner enough attention for the hard work their performances require. Year after year, horror actors find themselves passed up for higher acknowledgments because of the genre they excel in. Achieving the right tone and energy in their performances can make a cheap horror into a fantastic cheap horror. It could be Desiree Gould establishing the strange tone of Sleepaway Camp as Aunt Martha, or it could be an always welcome...

Fifteen Years Later: A Look Back at the State of Horror in 2009
Image
Can you believe it’s already been fifteen years since 2009? I feel older than Jason’s mother’s head. But never mind all that. We’re going to look into the past in celebratory fashion today and take a month-to-month look at what the world of horror looked like back in 2009.

The dreaded month of January kicked things off in usual January fashion with a forgettable title, The Unborn. A David S. Goyer picture that’s not very memorable but managed to be the sixth most successful horror film of 2009 domestically, raking in over $42 million at the box office.

Right behind it on the calendar was Patrick Lussier’s My Bloody Valentine 3D starring “Supernatural” actor Jensen Ackles. This slasher remake took the idea of January horror and embraced it, making a silly and gory slasher that was the world’s first R-rated film to ever use Real3D technology.

Another Horror Movie Did Immaculate’s Ending Better 33 Years Ago
Image
Immaculate's wild ending draws inspiration from a forgotten cult classic with a similar twist involving a demon baby and dark conspiracy. The slow-burn pace of Immaculate leads to a shocking conclusion, echoing the traditional horror genre build-up to terrifying endings. While The Unborn reveals its demon baby on-screen, Immaculate's ambiguous ending is both viscerally shocking and impactful, catering to different horror preferences.

Warning: This post contains Spoilers for Immaculate

While Sydney Sweeney’s pregnancy horror Immaculate has garnered strong reactions thanks to its wild ending, the horror movie’s shocking denouement was already done by a largely forgotten cult classic. 2024’s pregnancy horror Immaculate is a gory, violent religious horror movie about a young woman living in a remote convent who finds herself at the center of a creepy conspiracy. At least, Immaculate’s ending belongs to a wild, gory horror movie. Some reviewers have noted that Immaculate’s pacing is surprisingly slow,...

Pandorum (2009) – Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie?
Image
2009 is not exactly a year that horror fans remember fondly. What came out that year? Off the top of the head, not much comes up. A quick search gives us The Unborn, Underworld: Rise of the Lycans, and Drag Me to Hell. Depending on who you ask, these range from ok movies to Drag Me to Hell, but not exactly memorable overall. Something happened at the end of the 2000s and horror didn’t give us much to work with for some reason. If we dig, we get better titles like The Collector, Laid to Rest, and Paranormal Activity, but their box office ranged from amazing in the case of Paranormal Activity to almost nonexistent for the others, so it was completely hit or miss, like studios didn’t know what to push and what to keep for the home video market. Another movie that had a lot of potential...

Wolf Night: Jonathan Liebesman and Platinum Dunes re-team for werewolf film
Image
The folks at Platinum Dunes, the production company headed up by Michael Bay and Bradley Fuller, clearly love working with director Jonathan Liebesman. After working with Liebesman on the Texas Chainsaw Massacre prequel The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning, they had him attached to direct their reboot of Friday the 13th for a while – and even though Liebesman wasn’t at the helm of that one by the time it went into production, they did work with him again, on their 2014 version of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Now, a decade later, Platinum Dunes and Jonathan Liebesman are re-teaming for a werewolf movie called Wolf Night.

Deadline wasn’t able to dig up much information on Wolf Night, but they did learn that the project is being described as “District 9 by way of The Purge“. Will Honley, whose writing credits include Escape Room: Tournament of Champions, wrote the screenplay with April Maguire.

Night Swim review – soggy haunted pool horror sinks to the bottom
Kerry Condon
Kerry Condon follows up her Oscar nomination with a thankless piece of Blumhouse schlock that tries, and fails, to make swimming pools scary

It’s long been an extreme palate cleanser, the first weekend of January following a season of weighty awards fare with a froth of schlock horror, from fine dining to a guilty stop at McDonald’s after. Masterworks such as The Devil Inside (6%), Texas Chainsaw 3D (19%), The Forest (10%) and The Unborn (10%) have all crept out of the gate in previous years, often unscreened for critics, and despite a consistent lack of quality, the practice has become profitable, audiences happy to see in the new year with the very worst the industry has to offer. Then last year, there was an unlikely win with sly evil doll horror M3gan, bucking the trend as not only a major commercial smash but also a critical one, and backers, horror hit-factory Blumhouse,...

The Possession (2012) Revisited – Horror Movie Review
Image
The episode of Best Horror Movie You Never Saw covering The Possession was Written by Andrew Hatfield, Narrated by Jason Hewlett, Edited by Paul Bookstaber, Produced by John Fallon and Tyler Nichols, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.

While every decade has movies that fly under the radar, the addition of multiple streaming services in the 2010s gives us quite the list to work off of. While everyone’s favorite decade for horror is usually the ’80s or ’90s, there are far more hidden gems to find now than ever before. How a movie with a great cast, good production value, and the vaunted “based on a true story angle” was somehow successful at the box office and entirely forgotten just a little over a decade after release is just bizarre. It’s one of the more interesting demon takeover movies we’ve seen and definitely earns its title of...

About nine months ago, we heard that Michael Bay and Brad Fuller are reviving their production company Platinum Dunes at Universal – and now Deadline reports that one of the movies we’ll be getting from the revived Platinum Dunes is the supernatural horror film Lure, with Corin Hardy (The Nun) directing. Chris Bernier (Halloween Ends) is currently writing the screenplay.

While plot details are being kept under wraps, we do know that Lure is based on the haunting of the real-life King’s Tavern, considered to be the most haunted building in all of Mississippi, with one of its tenants being the murdered mistress of one of the tavern’s original owners.

I hadn’t heard of King’s Tavern before this announcement, but Wikipedia informs that the place is one of the oldest buildings in Natchez, Mississippi, as it was first build in 1769. It’s also considered to be...

Playing The Wire’s Stringer Bell Hurt Idris Elba’s Career In Unusual Way
Image
Idris Elba, who starred as Russell "Stringer" Bell on The Wire for three seasons reveals that, in some ways, the role hurt his career. First airing on HBO in 2002, The Wire ultimately ran for five seasons until its conclusion in 2008. The series chronicles the lives of the drug dealers, law enforcement officers, and innocent bystanders who get caught up in the Baltimore drug scene, with Elba's Bell serving as the right-hand man to drug kingpin Avon Barksdale.

In a recent interview with The Guardian, Elba reveals that, although his role on The Wire was really his big break in many ways, it also hurt his career in others. After convincingly playing an American for three seasons, the actor explains that his British heritage actually resulted in less interesting roles coming his way. Check out Elba's full comment below:

“Most people thought I was American during The Wire and then when they realised I was not,...

Shudder’s ‘Attachment’ and 5 Great Dybbuk Stories from Film and TV
Image
Jewish horror certainly isn’t new. ‘The Dybbuk,’ a play by S. Ansky about the Jewish folkloric demon, was first performed in 1920. Since, there have been many stories of the mythological nightmare, from stage to screen and otherwise. The dybbuk is named for the word “to cleave” or “to cling,” referencing the demon’s way of latching onto a living body. It’s a soul of a dead person that takes up a living host, possessing them until it is able to accomplish its goal.

Unlike Christian demons we’re used to seeing in films, dybbuks aren’t cohorts of the devil, but souls of the dead who are unable or unwilling to move on due to unfinished business. Movies like The Unborn (2009), The Possession (2012), and Ezra (2017) used the dybbuk, but each fell into a common trap. We won’t spend time tackling the 2003 created “dybbuk box,” but suffice it...

Lisa Frankenstein: Carla Gugino joins Zelda Williams, Diablo Cody horror comedy
Image
Carla Gugino has become a genre regular, largely thanks to Mike Flanagan. Her credits include The Unborn, Wayward Pines, Elizabeth Harvest, and the Flanagan projects Gerald’s Game, The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor, Midnight Mass, and The Fall of the House of Usher. Now Deadline reports that Gugino has joined the cast of another genre project, the horror comedy Lisa Frankenstein, which Zelda Williams is directing from a screenplay by Diablo Cody.

Williams is making her feature directorial debut with this film, which is set in 1989. Coming to us from Focus Features, the movie will show us what happens when

an unpopular high schooler accidentally re-animates a handsome Victorian corpse during a lightning storm and starts to rebuild him into the man of her dreams using the broken tanning bed in her garage.

Tom Cruise Said ‘Top Gun 2’ Would Be ‘Irresponsible’ and Glorify War in 1990 Interview
Image
Thirty years sure can make a difference. In a newly resurfaced Playboy interview with Tom Cruise, the Oscar nominee shut down a possible sequel to “Top Gun.” Now, on May 27, the sequel “Top Gun: Maverick” will open in theaters.

Cruise previously shared criticisms over the portrayal of war in “Top Gun,” telling Playboy that the film was received in a variety of different ways.

“Some people felt that ‘Top Gun’ was a right-wing film to promote the Navy. And a lot of kids loved it,” Cruise said at the time, via Gizmodo. “But I want the kids to know that that’s not the way war is — that ‘Top Gun’ was just an amusement park ride, a fun film with a PG-13 rating that was not supposed to be reality.”

He added, “That’s why I didn’t go on and make ‘Top Gun II’ and III and IV and V.

Tom Cruise Said Making ‘Top Gun 2’ Would Be ‘Irresponsible,’ 32 Years Before ‘Top Gun: Maverick’
Image
Tom Cruise’s long-delayed “Top Gun: Maverick” is finally set to blast off in theaters later this month, but making a follow-up to his classic 1986 action drama was not always of interest. A 1990 interview Cruise gave to Playboy magazine during the publicity tour for “Born on the Fourth of July” has resurfaced from Gizmodo and finds the A-list star calling the idea of making a “Top Gun” sequel “irresponsible.” Cruise was responding to the interviewer calling “Top Gun” a “Nintendo game and a paean to blind patriotism” in comparison to “Born on the Fourth of July.”

“Some people felt that ‘Top Gun’ was a right-wing film to promote the Navy. And a lot of kids loved it. But I want the kids to know that that’s not the way war is — that ‘Top Gun’ was just an amusement park ride, a fun film with a PG-13 rating that was not supposed to be reality,...

‘Superhost’ Blu-ray Review
Image
Stars: Osric Chau, Sara Canning, Gracie Gillam, Barbara Crampton | Written and Directed by Brandon Christensen

Superhost is the third film by writer/director Brandon Christensen (Still/Born) and the first that wasn’t co-written with Colin Minihan. It’s also the first that doesn’t revolve around parenthood. How well has he managed to change things up? And can he bring something new to a pair of well-worn plots, the Airbnb from hell and YouTubers getting more of a story than they bargained for?

Teddy and Claire are co-hosts of the YouTube channel Superhost! as well as being a couple off-screen. He’s even planning to propose to her when they film their next segment.

But all is not well in the world of Airbnb reviews. Their subscriber count has been dropping due to their unsensational content. They rent a remote cabin only to find that the access code has been changed.

Wyrmwood: Apocalypse review – gnarly zombie mayhem in splatterific sequel
Jay Gallagher, Shantae Barnes-Cowan, Luke McKenzie, Tasia Zalar, Bianca Bradey, and Nicholas Boshier in Wyrmwood: Apocalypse (2021)
This energetic sequel to the 2015 Aussie low-budget hit is fun, even if it is more focused on delivering carnage than a story

The ratio of gnarly infections and guts-splaying mayhem per screen minute is an important metric for zombie movies. While I am yet to analyse the data in a scientifically sound way, I can confidently declare that, on these merits, Wyrmwood: Apocalypse is a resounding success. The film is a perversely colourful, visually energetic and proudly splatterific sequel to its 2015 predecessor, a lean and mean midnight movie that, while stuffed with familiar genre elements, had a couple of rare or rare-ish distinguishing features.

The first is simply that it was an Australian zombie movie. There have been few others, including Cargo, which saw a freshly bitten Martin Freeman stumbling around the Australian outback, desperately looking to find somebody to care for his baby before he turned into a flesh-muncher.

‘There’s no point investing in a film if it’s not going to have an impact’: Richard Harris to spearhead Minderoo Pictures
Image
The newly formed social impact film division of the Minderoo Foundation will “most likely” have a core diet of feature documentaries but is also open to other genres that facilitate social impact storytelling, according to executive producer Richard Harris.

Minderoo Pictures has been established with an initial commitment of $10 million to support screen projects that address the global challenges championed by the Perth-based philanthropic organisation.

The first four projects include a feature film collaboration between Academy Award-winning documentary filmmaker Louie Psihoyos and Josh Murphy, Robert Connolly’s feature Blueback, Michael Cordell and Emily-Anyupa Butcher’s Honey Ant Dreamers, and First Born, produced by Workshop TV.

Established by Andrew and Nicola Forrest in 2001, the Minderoo Foundation has since gone on to commit $2 billion to a range of global initiatives, ranging from ocean research and ending slavery, to collaboration in cancer and arts and culture projects.

Harris said the organisation’s activity...
