Melvil Poupaud, an actor in Francois Ozon’s “By the Grace of God” and Maiwenn’s “Jeanne du Barry,” will receive the French Cinema Award from Unifrance, the French promotion organization.

The ceremony will be held on Jan. 18 at the Culture Ministry during the Rendez-Vous With French Cinema market. The French Cinema Award was created in 2016 to honor actors, filmmakers and producers who have contributed to making French cinema shine abroad. Past recipients include actor Juliette Binoche, director Olivier Assayas and producers Aton Soumache and Dimitri Rassam, among others.

Poupaud started his career as a child actor in the 1980 and has worked with auteurs such as Raoul Ruiz, Eric Rohmer, James Ivory and Ozon, with whom he has made four movies. His latest film directed by Ozon, “By the Grace of God,” won the Silver Bear in Berlin and earned him a Cesar nomination for best actor. Richard Belzer, a comedian and actor best known for playing Detective John Munch in several NBC crime dramas, including Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and Homicide: Life on the Street, has died at the age of 78.

According to his manager Eric Gardner, Belzer died early on Sunday, February 19, at his home in France.

Bill Scheft, a writer and longtime friend of Belzer, said that he had “lots of health issues.”

He made his film debut in the comedic satire The Groove Tube (1974) alongside Chevy Chase. The film contained skits that featured social commentary on television shows of the 70s.

He also served as the warm-up comedian for Saturday Night Live and made three guest appearances on the show in the late 70s.

His death was first reported on social media by his friend, the actor Laraine Newman, of Saturday Night Live fame.

It’s 1978. Didier (Melvil Poupaud) is in charge of France’s major missile launch that was years in the making. It fizzles spectacularly, but no one, including his ex-wife and collaborator Elise (Geraldine Pailhas), can figure out what went wrong. In the wake of his high-profile flop, someone’s head must roll, so the boss dumps him into an obscure department that deals with reported UFO sightings. That sub-agency is merely a joke to the country’s aerospace scientists and politicians, so his mission is to debunk all the rumors to justify shutting it down.

At the Unifrance Rendez-Vous in Biarritz, Studiocanal revealed further sales on its high-budget sci-fi thriller “Infiniti,” produced by Empreinte Digitale and Federation Entertainment Belgium, as well as a raft of sales on other Canal+ Creation Originale drama series.

The show has already sold to more than 60 territories internationally, including Spain, Portugal and Latin America. Sporting a powerful slate of new shows at MipTV, Studiocanal, owned by Vivendi’s Canal Plus, has announced what it describes as a “substantial” distribution deal with U.S. streaming service MHz Networks.

The deal features banner Canal Plus Creation Originale series “UFOs” and “Paris Police” as well as a modern classic, the pay TV’s groundbreaking premium crime drama “Spiral.”

Covering VOD and home entertainment rights, the licensing agreement takes in Season 1 and the brand new Season 2 of “UFOs,” which is part of Studiocanal’s MipTV’s sales slate, led by “Django,” starring Matthias Schoenaerts and Noomi Rapace and Canneseries official selection title “Infiniti.”

The sales also include Season 1 and Season 2, now in production, of large-scale period crime drama “Paris Police” and the renewal of the entire eight seasons of the multiple award-winning “Spiral.” Series will be made available to MHz Networks’ viewers across North America.
