Stephen Hillenburg, the creator of SpongeBob, was interviewed in 2009 and asked about any future spin offs about other characters, he replyed he didn't see any spin offs in the near future. Showrunner Vincent Waller confirmed on Twitter that Stephen Hillenburg was involved with the development of the spin-off series. He stated "Steve was aware it was being developed. Sadly he did not get to see it completed, I think it would have made him smile. Tom Kenny also backed up these statements in a 2021 Nickalive interview stating he was a bit unsure about the CGI Animation but was soon impressed of what the animators could pull off with it.
