Combine the wildest March Madness Cinderella story with, undeniably, the most tragic loss ever experienced during a sporting event, and top it off with the most heartwarming, unbelievable, Rudy-esqu celebration wins, all recounted by the people who witnessed it first-hand, and you have the greatest documentary not created by Ken Burns! Absolutely incredible! The entire tale is recounted through personal, emotionally charged, interviews, paired with still photos and tons of archived videos, interviews, broadcasts and home movies. It's an emotional rollercoaster, right out the gate, but it's all so beautifully presented, like no other documentary I've seen. I've been a lifelong NASCAR fan and also a documentary fan, and I have never seen anything like this. It's officially one of my favorite films (if all genres.) I will certainly be watching it again and again, and I highly recommend y'all do the same.
This movie was a number of different experiences for my husband and I. There was stuff to learn; goosebumps to feel with the thunderous roar of footage at the track; smiles to share with the little funnies that are Michael W; and tears to cry as the wound of losing Dale Sr is reopened. We really enjoyed this movie. And glad we stayed through and after the credits for the 10 minutes of extra footage. I am hoping this will be released on DVD or some other format. Definitely worth another watch.
Thank you Michael Waltrip for your good heart and ability to share this story
Blink of an Eye is more than just a documentary; it's a heartfelt exploration of the emotional rollercoaster that is the world of NASCAR. The film takes us on a journey through the remarkable career of Michael Waltrip, culminating in the unforgettable 2001 Daytona 500-a race that was as monumental as it was heartbreaking.
As someone with a deep love for motorsport, particularly after being captivated by Days of Thunder, I approached this film with a blend of fascination and respect. NASCAR, while often on the fringes of my interests alongside IndyCar, has always held a special place, and this film offers an insightful look into its history.
The documentary delicately balances the elation of Michael Waltrip's first-ever NASCAR win with the profound sadness of losing his close friend and car owner, Dale Earnhardt, in a tragic accident on the same day. It's a reminder of how the thrill of victory can be starkly juxtaposed with the agony of loss, and how personal triumphs can become intertwined with deep personal grief.
Dale Earnhardt's legacy as a revered legend of the sport is honored with the respect and reverence it deserves, while Michael Waltrip emerges as a deeply genuine and admirable figure. The film captures his warmth and the emotional weight of the day, reflecting on how such contrasting emotions can coexist and shape a person's journey.
In essence, Blink of an Eye is a moving tribute to a pivotal moment in NASCAR history, offering both a detailed account of a significant race and a poignant reflection on friendship, loss, and resilience. For anyone with a passion for motorsport, this film is a compelling watch that resonates with both the highs and the lows of the racing world.
10/10-because in the blink of an eye, a sport and its people can experience profound moments that are as touching as they are unforgettable.
