Dragon Quest: Your Story is a great movie. Having played and loved Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age, I went in with high expectations and was not disappointed. Despite not playing Dragon Quest V, I felt really connected to the story and characters in this film. The only nagging aspect of this movie are the weird plot jumps. Throughout the movie, there are several jumps that feel to me as though they are skipping huge plot scenes that should have been incorporated into the film. The ending however, despite popular opinion, really hit home for me. I loved the message that the ending scene portrayed and this scene alone made my opinion jump from a 5 to an 8. Had it been roughly 2 and a half hours, with more character development and more action sequences, this would have likely been a 10 for me. In short, Dragon Quest: Your Story, is exactly as the title says, "Your Story" and I would recommend this to anyone, especially anyone who likes or has played any of the Dragon Quest games.

I have not my self played Dragon Quest V, but as an avid gamer for over three decades, this movie still gave me a lot of good vibes and took me back to some old memories!
The visuals are stunning and only based on that, I would recommend this! It does however fall short in some areas. It feels a little "forced" at times, and the potential is more than what the end product shows.
All in all it was a pleasure to watch, and even though it is nothing revolutionary, it is a good-feel story with stunning graphics!

What a great homage that was. I remembered so many moments of playing the games while watching this movie. Such good times. I loved how they told this story making you feel a part of it. The movie looks stunning by the way, the visuals are so great!
It may not be for everyone, obviously directed to fans of the franchise but I hope some people will get to know this universe and even go after the games.

The computer animated Dragon Quest: You're Story is based on the plot of the video game Dragon Quest V from the 90's. It's alright.
The biggest issue with this is that it's trying to cover the plot of a game that spans the main character's life over thirty years and takes several hours to complete within the span of an hour and forty-three minutes. This really feels like a highlight reel. A lot of tonal switches, too. The lead Luca's first third of his story is really glossed over quickly. The intro starts with using images from the original game, but it's really confusing to those new to the story. Too many characters are introduced too quickly through tiny pixel images and it's hard to tell who is who and what's going on.
That having been said, this film is a nice ride. It's got a sense of fun to it and definitely captures the feel to the games. The computer animation is bright and colorful. The trademark DQ series character design from Akira Toriyama (also the creator of Dragonball Z) is adapted pretty well into 3D animation.
Also, this may be worth sticking through to the finale. I don't think everyone's going to like it, but it's definitely something.
Overall, this is something I probably won't revisit, but glad I did. I think DQ fans will probably like this. I think this may go over well with children, too.

I hate when they use actors and actrices just for publicity. Although Disney does a good job with it , your story was disastrous

At the moment i am seeing that the movie had the score of 4.9 and this is really unfair , the movie is absolutely stunning visually , a classical hero story for the all time fan of the franchise the Jrpgs, or classical shounen animes. Watching it in HD is an absolute delight, the 3D is top noch with the textures ,details and movements in most of the film that it kept me on my toes all the time looking at all the small details. Sometimes there s some small things that set me off like some scene when the are running or some of the textures... Anyway again the film is a lovely nostalgic yet modern trip especially for the fan of the series or the japanese animation fan in general.
I gave it a 9 ,a score I wouldn't give all that easily .

This movie was so great, amazing and exciting story, incredible animation and was never dull. I never played the games but really enjoyed this anime until the very end when the ending jut undermined and killed the whole movie. It felt unnecessary and out of left field which was so disappointing.

The film was really great!! Visually stunning CGi, really nice soundtrack, and to tell you the truth.. the plot twist at the end made me shed my tear!! You could feel how much love was given by these creators.. they really do admire the DQ series..
There's only few problem with the screenplay, but it's understandable.. like FFVII, old game like these couldn't be retold within an hour and a half.. They've already trued their best in adapting and keep up with the best possible.. I truly enjoy the film :))
Also the dub was pretty good.

I'll be blunt, i hated this movie.
I don't know anything about Dragon Quest apart from that it is a very popular RPG game in Japan but I am a fan of the art director and fantasy worlds in general so jumped into this with optimism.
It all falls apart. Let's break it down:
I hated it. The only redeeming factor is that I acknowledge the time and effort that went into the animation of it but everything about it sucked.
It all falls apart. Let's break it down:
- The film doesn't have any sense of pace or story telling direction. You jump through ludicrous names, locations and events all within 9 minutes of the movie with time skipping, character development flying by and by 25 minutes in, I had no idea who anyone was or any kind of connection to any character because the film doesn't allow you to digest what is happening. It's GO GO GO.
- The art style is pretty wack. It can look pretty in scenes but doesn't look anything like Akira Toriyama's art which it's based on and it looks incredibly plastic. Also, the characters eyes are really far apart and there is a lot of derpy faces going on. It's like it wanted to be Anime but realistic at the same time?
- The animation is very weirdly distracting and loose. Every character never stops fidgeting or moving. For example, when two characters are "trying" to explain something, they're hopping all over the place and overly emoting like crazy so it just distracts you.
- Dialog flies by waaaay too fast. This causes issues in that one; you have really got to play attention to the subs and two, if you're watching the dub they talk faster than your brain can acknowledge.
I hated it. The only redeeming factor is that I acknowledge the time and effort that went into the animation of it but everything about it sucked.

I unintentionally watched the film, thought the CG seems pretty nice from the trailer.. and that's the best decision I've made this year!!

Although the game's story is condensed heavily, it is still well done. Everything that's important is here, and of course, the animation is stunning.
Unfortunately, they completely ruin the film by changing the ending in a BAD way. Like, I was so baffled by the ending that I'm like, I'm never seeing this film again.
Extremely disappointed.

I was a little confused at the choice of straying away from the Akira Toriyama art style, but I have to say that the style of the film has grown on me. The film combines a number of characters from the games and includes just enough reinterpretation of the source material to keep longtime fans guessing at what's coming next.

This movie's first flaw is the pacing. everything happens too fast and if not familiar with the series, and the game this movie is based on specifically, you're going to get lost pretty fast. its second flaw is that it's made for fans of the series and disregards appealing to anyone else. it's nothing but fan service and nods to the game nonstop. not a good thing. but the third flaw is its most serious flaw: the ending. it completely throws away the whole story up to that point in the dumbest twist possible in an attempt to appeal even more to long time fans of the video games. as if it was necessary at that point in the movie. and i understand what they tried to do but it just doesn't work, when i realized what was happening with the ending i lost all interest and felt i had wasted my time watching the movie up to that point.
the cgi, animation and character design are gorgeous, even with the changing of the way humans look from the original designs by akira toriyama. the monsters look better than ever but the voice acting and humor are just ok, standard for a japanese animation movie. huge disappointment for a long time dragon quest fan.

As someone who played Dragon Quest V, long ago the story beats and characters are there. After the fact, I really appreciated the efforts that provided the excitement and with the context of your story.
All the bits and pieces of what makes Dragon Quest is present, and if you have played the game I'm sure it'll recall the moments and emotion that'll yearn for the world you know and love. Which is the point.
This isn't going to change your experience with your adventure, only reignite it.

I didn't play DQ V, but did play DQVIII & DQXI.
The movie is a concentrate of the whole Dragon Quest Saga environment, values and messages, monsters, plot and battles in just a couple of hours.
The original soundtrack makes it perfect, the main character shares his name with me and I cried several times watching it.
The final, at first disappointing, in reality is something that every passionate Dragon Quest player share and that is really heartmelting.
This is absolutely a MUST if you are a fan of the saga.

The film is really nostalgic, the graphic is awesome and resembles with real textures, DQXI, the last game for now.
Just few scenes aren't perfectly rendered but the clue ones have a lighting on texture which is unbelievable.
That's all folks!

I think for long time fans of DQ that you can find a charming retelling of DQ V and even for people who don't really follow the games can find something to enjoy with this light hearted tale. I think that with the ending though the movie delves in too fast into a message that had no real build up prior to the reveal. Still, the film has many bright sides despite it's end I think the film is enjoyable.
