Well, initially I didn't know that the 2020 movie "Sacrifice" was a Lovecraftian movie, so that was quite the nice surprise when that dawned upon me as I was watching the movie.
I hadn't heard about "Sacrifice" before now in 2021, as I had the opportunity to sit down to watch the movie. And it was initially because of the movie's cover and the fact that it had Barbara Crampton on the cast list that I sat down to watch this movie.
The storyline, as written by Andy Collier, Paul Kane and Tor Mian, definitely have some interesting aspects to it, but ultimately the movie settled itself into a slump, from which it never recovered. The movie just went into auto-pilot mode, and it reflected poorly on the movie as a whole. There was just simply too little of any overly interest happening throughout the course of the movie.
It should be said that directors Andy Collier and Tor Mian managed to capture a great atmosphere in the movie and managed to present a storyline that was laced with a sense of cosmic dread, but the ending of the movie was just too predicable and mundane, and that dragged the movie down.
"Sacrifice" has a good ensemble of casted actors and actresses. I do like watching Barbara Crampton in movies, but having her portraying a Norwegian woman was just out of the realm of believable options, especially since her accent was all over the place and never settling on a single specific accent; sometimes it sounded Irish, other times American, and a few times oddly twisted Scandinavian. So it just ruined so much of the movie having her accent fly all over the place.
Visually then "Sacrifice" was adequate. But if you are expecting a movie that is crammed with special effects, where you get to see one or more of the Great Old Ones, then you will be sorely mistaken. Sure, you get to see some nice carved idols and interesting amulets, and even a tentacle or two, but that was about it. So it was somewhat disappointing.
Sure, "Sacrifice" is a watchable movie, but it was ultimately not a memorable movie, nor a particularly great foray into the realm of the Mythos that H.P. Lovecraft created.
My rating of "Sacrifice" ends on a very bland and mediocre five out of ten stars.

Here we have a tale where it's kind of slow at the beginning, then gets a little more dramatic and you're expecting a climactic conclusion...but then you get nothing.
I usually give up on movies like this after 20 minutes but it felt like it was building to something great and cosmic so I stayed the course.
It doesn't go anywhere, nothing happens and it isn't worth your time.
3/10 for the pretty location.

It had potential, but it missed one important part of this type of horror. It says it is based on the writings of Lovecraft. His writings are big on monsters, right? This entire movie has no payoff: you never get to see the monster. Fail. Otherwise good.
As a Norwegian I'm offended. I can accept the lovecraftian twist which in no way relates to Norwegian folklore, but the lack of understanding of Norwegian culture, way of speaking or relation between humans are unacceptable. They have too many Norwegians on cast to let this slide. The way they speak (words used) and relate to each other makes the movie utterly unrealistic or relatable. I wish the story was strong enough to disregard its flaws in presenting an obviously unknown culture.
¿Sabías que…?
- TriviaThe character of Renate was rewritten from a male to a female when it became apparent that Barbara Crampton was interested in the role.
