Dave Franco doesn't bring anything new to the horror genre with his feature film directorial debut (which he also wrote) but he does provide an entertaining hour and a half (give or take) in this film about two couples who have booked into an AirBnB type property, only to discover a number of hidden cameras around the building.
Acting is decent enough and another good film for Dan Stevens' ever growing resume. Take this film as intended (a fun thriller - popcorn movie) and you will be entertained enough. Go in looking for the deep and meaningful and you'll hate it.
Ignore the reviews stating it is "pointless" - they clearly expected too much.

Decent movie premise but god its boring. Characters are pretty telegraphed from the beginning. Allison Brie plays herself pretty well, and is probably the only redeeming character in the movie. All in all its pretty disappointing. Would've rather spent my time watching anything else just because its so very meh. There are some brutal spots but the movie is just setting up literally a confrontation from within the whole time with a mouth breather thrown in. No real mystery. No real 'omg whats gonna come next'. It's just so...meh. I'm glad I watched this when I needed a nap because it put me right in the mood to take it.
Way better than the ratings. It keeps the intrigue for the first part and the rest has a good rhythm. Pretty decent directing by Franco. I don't see it lower than at least a 6. It is one of the lowest ratings compared to the quality of the film I have seen in my whole life.
Greetings from Lithuania.
"The Rental" (2020) is a nice little drama thriller flick. It is by any means a horror movie - do not be fooled. It plays more like a soup drama to be honest. I liked performances in this movie, especially by Dan Stevens and Sheila Vand. Set up was not original, but I bought it - i was into. But its the third act that kinda felt off for me. I liked this movie way more before the third act - I was involved into these characters story and then it just kinda did not deliver it for me at the end. There is a great idea somewhere done here, unfortunately it was not delivered in this movie fully.

I recently watched The Rental (2020) on Netflix. The story follows two brothers who take their girlfriends on a trip to a secluded oceanfront cabin. As they settle in, they begin to suspect their host may be racist and overly present on the property. Meanwhile, one brother has a dark past, and the other is hiding a secret in the present-tensions build, and an inevitable explosion between the couples looms.
This film is directed by Dave Franco (Somebody I Used to Know) and stars Dan Stevens (The Guest), Jeremy Allen White (The Bear), Alison Brie (Promising Young Woman), Toby Huss (King of the Hill), and Sheila Vand (Argo).
The cast is strong, with each actor fitting their role perfectly. The setting enhances the eerie, isolated atmosphere, and the character dynamics are well-developed, making the unraveling tension feel natural. The script does a great job establishing stakes and character depth. Also, this had to be one of the worst nights to ever be on Molly for a particular character.
However, despite a solid buildup, the film stumbles in the follow-through. Outside of one decent hammer sequence, the payoff is underwhelming, and the ending feels like a letdown.
In conclusion, The Rental had plenty of potential but ultimately fell flat. 13 Cameras executed this concept better. I'd score it a 5/10.

- TriviaFilmed in Bandon, Oregon at an actual beach rental.
- ErroresWhen the car punctures its tires on road spikes, the car in question is a BMW which would normally be fitted with run-flat tires. This would allow the car to continue driving and would not have stopped the way it did.
- Créditos curiososDespite the pivotal role the killer is not explicitly listed in the credits. The person portraying the killer is possibly one of the 26 named "Background" people.
