Image
Talk about a “merger.” Secretly Group, the indie label group whose companies include Dead Oceans, Secretly Canadian and Jagjaguwar, has acquired a 50 percent stake in fellow influential indie label Merge Records, the companies announced on Tuesday. Financial details of the new deal weren’t disclosed.

Secretly’s co-founders Ben Swanson, Chris Swanson, Darius Van Arman and Phil Waldorf purchased the stake, while Mac McCaughan, also a member of beloved indie band Superchunk, is expected to remain in his role as label president and head of A&r. Christina Rentz, Merge’s label director, will maintain her current role, the companies said, along with Merge marketing director Jamie Beck and head of digital Wilson Fuller. Merge’s co-founder and co-president Laura Ballance, also bass player in Superchunk, is leaving the music business.

Ballance and McCaughan first founded Merge Records in 1989, and the label became the home of beloved indie classics like...

What Happened To Bianca In Shameless? Her Heartbreaking Death Explained
Image
The following article contains discussions of illness and suicide.

With its massive main cast, it's unsurprising that Shameless also featured a large variety of supporting characters throughout, with many having a significant impact, especially Bianca Samson. Premiering in 2011, Shameless ran for 11 seasons and revolved around the dysfunctional, lower-class Gallagher family comprised of alcoholic patriarch Frank Gallagher (William H. Macy) and his six children. The show walked a fine line between dark comedy and tackling serious, devastating issues like disease and addiction.

Though the Gallagher family were the stars of the show, Shameless' various supporting characters helped make the series as beloved as it is. The Gallaghers' dysfunction certainly extends to their romantic relationships, as Frank and his kids have a seemingly revolving door of partners. Most of these relationships are doomed from the start, but a rare few are able to puncture the Gallaghers' gritty shells and affect them in ways they never thought possible.

The Magnetic Fields Bring Eight of Their ’69 Love Songs’ to NPR’s ‘Tiny Desk’
Image
The Magnetic Fields were able to get through eight of their 69 Love Songs during a performance on NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert series.

The special performance allowed Stephin Merritt and co. to offer stripped-down takes on some of the songs they’ve been playing around North America this year as they celebrate the 25th anniversary of the classic double album. The performance opened with Anthony Kaczynski singing the short and tender a cappella “Roses,” then continued with Merritt leading a rendition of “All My Little Words.”

Merritt continued to share...

Christophe Honoré’s Marcello Mio – 2024 Cannes Critics’ Panel: Day 8
Image
Having sprinkled his films in the competition section twice before with Les chansons d’amour (2007) and Sorry Angel (2018), Christophe Honoré has also populated the fest with Un Certain Regard, Out of Comp and Directors’ Fortnight offerings. With Marcello Mio, the filmmaker reunites with his muse Chiara Mastroianni and they both honor who else but her famous actor dad and what is kinda meta level is that her mom Catherine Deneuve and other famous faces in Fabrice Luchini, Nicole Garcia, Benjamin Biolay, Melvil Poupaud all play version of themselves.

Gist: This is the story of a woman named Chiara. She is an actress, the daughter of Marcello Mastroianni and Catherine Deneuve.…...

‘Marcello Mio’ Receives Eight-Minute+ Bravos At World Premiere – Cannes Film Festival
Image
Now a Cannes veteran, French filmmaker Christophe Honoré has returned to the Competition with the world premiere of Marcello Mio, his French-Italian comedy that stars longtime collaborator Chiara Mastroianni — who, in the film, adopts the persona and appearance of her late father, Marcello Mastroianni. The movie received applause that lasted a touch over eight minutes during its unveiling this evening.

Marcello Mio taps into the younger Mastroianni’s complex reality of being the daughter of cinema icons Marcello Mastroianni and Catherine Deneuve.

In a fantasy scenario, Chiara hits a crisis point and begins to dress, speak and breathe like her late father, the legendary star of such films as La Dolce Vita, 81/2 and Marriage Italian Style. Those around her, including Deneuve, Fabrice Luchini, Melvil Poupaud, Benjamin Biolay, Nicole Garica and Hugh Skinner, who also play part-real, part-fictionalized versions of themselves in Marcello Mio, begin to believe it and start to call her “Marcello.

‘Marcello Mio’ Review: Chiara Mastroianni & Catherine Deneuve Play Themselves In An Amusing Family Affair Like No Other – Cannes Film Festival
Image
Talk about an identity crisis!

In a wonderfully funny and completely original comedy, French star Chiara Mastroianni in a bit of an existential crisis mode decides one day to morph into her very famous father, the late great Marcello Mastroianni. In a search for her own identity she discovers more about herself, her father, even her equally famous mother Catherine Deneuve who surprisingly consented to play herself and discover truths about her relationship with her ex-finacé (he died in 1996) that had never been made public.

Playing tonight in the official competition of the Cannes Film Festival, where the entire family has appeared many times as fictional characters, this time it hits close to home, but always with a light touch as Chiara drops her own persona and hits the town as if it were Marcello Mastroianni back in Fellini’s 8 1/2. Black suit, hat, moustache, large glasses — she’s all in.

Andre Braugher, Star Of Brooklyn Nine-Nine And Homicide: Life On The Street, Dies At 61
Image
Andre Braugher, the two-time Emmy-winning actor who led a sense of grace, gravitas, and (when appropriate) humor to shows like "Homicide: Life on the Street," "Men of a Certain Age," "Brooklyn Nine-Nine," and "The Good Fight" has died. Deadline confirms that the actor passed away Monday after a short illness. He was 61 years old.

Braugher was reportedly born and raised in Chicago to an equipment operator father and a postal worker mother but attended Stanford University before graduating from Juilliard's drama school. His first on-screen role was a big one: Braugher played a Union soldier in the 1989 film "Glory," where he acted alongside greats like Denzel Washington and Morgan Freeman. The actor soon became a creative force in his own right, as his role as Detective Frank Pembleton on the seminal NBC series "Homicide: Life on the Street" made him a household name for TV fans. "We had a lot of great,...

André Braugher Dies: Star Of ‘Homicide: Life On The Street’, ‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’ & Other Series And Films Was 61
Image
André Braugher has died. The two-time Emmy-winning star of series including Homicide: Life on the Street, Men of a Certain Age and Brooklyn Nine-Nine was 61.

Braugher, whose first film role came alongside Matthew Broderick and Denzel Washington in the Ed Zwick-directed Glory, died Monday after a brief illness.

While Braugher peppered his résumé with comedies, many will remember him for his ferocious portrayal of Detective Frank Pembleton in the NBC drama Homicide: Life on the Street. Put him in “the box,” sweating out and outsmarting crime suspects in the interrogation room, and you were looking at a weekly dose of tour de force acting, as good as it got on television during that time. He won an Emmy for that show he starred in from 1992-98. His wife, Ami Brabson, recurred as Pembleton’s wife on Homicide.

This is the latest from sultry French filmmaker Christophe Honoré and deals with a woman who leaves her husband and moves into a hotel opposite of her home. There she wonders if she made the right decision, re-examining her entire life with him. Award-winning French actress Chiara Mastroianni stars, with Benjamin Biolay, Vincent Lacoste, Camille Cottin, and Carole Bouquet. Nothing like a French comedy about infidelity and marriage, right? This one looks whimsical and amusing. 'We kept the trauma to ourselves': Christophe Honoré on the idols lost to Aids
The French writer-director talks about his highly personal new show, a ‘dance of the dead’ that pays tribute to artistic heroes including Jacques Demy

Director Christophe Honoré still looks pained at the memory of the protests against gay marriage that rocked France seven years ago. The adoption of same-sex marriage in the country, a flagship policy that President François Hollande had campaigned on, was supposed to have been a smooth process. It became law in 2013, but only after a protracted backlash that saw hundreds of thousands take to the streets – more overall than the recent gilets jaunes (yellow vests) movement.

“I realised there was still a cloud of suspicion hanging over gay citizens,” says Honoré, best known internationally for comedies and musical films including 2007’s Love Songs. “I felt hurt, but also responsible, because in my work I’d never thought that gay visibility might still be important. I felt like I’d failed,...

Christophe Honore’s ‘Sorry Angel’ Wins France’s Louis Delluc Prize
Christophe Honoré in Dans Paris (2006)
Christophe Honoré’s drama “Sorry Angel,” which world premiered in competition at Cannes Film Festival, won France’s prestigious Louis Delluc Prize.

Kicking off France’s award season, the Louis Delluc prize is chosen by French critics and has been described as the film equivalent to the coveted Goncourt prize for literature.

“Sorry Angel” stars French actors Pierre Deladonchamps as a jaded, HIV-positive 30-something novelist who comes across an enthusiastic aspiring writer, Arthur (Vincent Lacoste), in his early 20s. “Sorry Angel” marks the director’s comeback to Cannes’ competition 11 years after “Love Songs.”

In winning the Louis Delluc Prize, “Sorry Angel” beat out Jacques Audiard’s “The Sisters Brothers,” Emmanuel Mouret’s “Mademoiselle de Joncquières,” Gilles Lellouche’s “Le Grand Bain,” Claire Denis’ “High Life,” Pierre Salvadori’s “En liberté!”, Cedric Kahn’s “La Prière,” Jean-Paul Civeyrac’s “Mes provinciales,” and Emmanuel Finkiel’s “Memoir of War,” which represents France in the foreign-language Oscar race.

Strand Releasing Scoops U.S. Rights to Christophe Honoré’s Cannes Player ‘Sorry Angel’ (Exclusive)
Strand Releasing has acquired U.S. rights to Christophe Honore’s “Sorry Angel” which world premiered in competition at Cannes Film Festival.

Sold by MK2, “Sorry Angel” takes place in Paris, in 1993, and follows Jacques, a renown writer and single father in his 30’s who is desperately trying to maintain a sense of normalcy against the backdrop of the AIDS crisis and unexpectedly falls in love with an enthusiastic aspiring writer in his early 20s.

The film is headlined by a strong French cast, including Pierre Deladonchamps (“Stranger by the Lake”), Vincent Lacoste (“Lolo”) and Denis Podalydes (“Mr & Mme Adelman”).

Speaking to Variety at Cannes, Honoré said he wanted, through the film, to “explore (his) memories of being in my 20s in the ’90s.” “AIDS was part of our lives (…) and the fear of death was looming over love and sex relationships,” said Honoré.

“We’re delighted that this very...

Christophe Honoré on ‘Sorry Angel’: ‘In France We’re Blessed as Filmmakers’
Christophe Honoré in Dans Paris (2006)
One of French novelist-turned-director Christophe Honoré’s most personal films, “Sorry Angel” world premiered on Thursday in competition at Cannes. Sold by MK2, “Sorry Angel” stars French actors Pierre Deladonchamps as a 30-something jaded, HIV-positive novelist who comes across an enthusiastic aspiring writer, Arthur (Vincent Lacoste) in his early 20s. “Sorry Angel” marks the director’s comeback to Cannes’s competition 11 years after “Love Songs.” He’s working on “Les Idoles,” a new play paying tribute to several artists who died of AIDS. It will kick off in January at Paris’ Odéon theater.

“Sorry Angel” follows a romance between two men, one of which has AIDS, in the ’90s. Yet, your film is not a full-on AIDS drama like Robin Campillo’s “Bpm.” How would you describe it?

I wanted to explore my memories of being in my 20s in the ’90s. AIDS was part of our lives, so many people around me died,...

Pierre Deladonchamps and Vincent Lacoste in Vivir deprisa, amar despacio (2018)
Cannes Film Review: ‘Sorry Angel’
Pierre Deladonchamps and Vincent Lacoste in Vivir deprisa, amar despacio (2018)
As any cinephile can tell you, there are some directors we love despite the fact they have never made a great film, but rather for the uniqueness of their voice and the hope that one day they will deliver on their potential. In the case of Christophe Honoré, his delightful “Love Songs” landed him on that list, even if no one would argue that the effervescent 2007 ménage-à-trois musical was a masterpiece, while every subsequent film has slightly chipped away at our affection.

Now, with “Sorry Angel”, Honoré at last makes good on our faith in his talent, flashing back to 1993 to deliver a deeply personal queer romance that combines his best qualities as a filmmaker, even as it splits his identity between two men at opposite ends of life, HIV-positive writer Jacques (Pierre Deladonchamps) and college-age reader Arthur (Vincent Lacoste), each falling in love with the idea of the other.

Pierre Deladonchamps and Vincent Lacoste in Vivir deprisa, amar despacio (2018)
‘Sorry Angel’ Review: Christophe Honoré’s Gay Drama is the French Variation on ‘Weekend’ — Cannes 2018
Pierre Deladonchamps and Vincent Lacoste in Vivir deprisa, amar despacio (2018)
“Sorry Angel” is about a sad, brilliant author struggling with AIDS, but it’s not a grim death drama. The most emotional and understated work from French director Christophe Honoré is a touching tribute to the art and culture of early ‘90s France, charting creative obsessions young and old, and strikes a note that’s life-affirming and melancholic.

Set in 1993, the movie centers on Jacques, an HIV-positive novelist of some note who has reached a crossroads. He’s single, but lives with a young son in his cluttered Paris apartment, where middle-aged neighbor Arthur (Vincent Lacoste) pays frequent visits as the men reminisce about the old days. In the midst of this dynamic, Jacques meets Arthur (Vincent Lacoste), an aspiring filmmaker in his early twenties keen on escaping that parochial seaside world of Brittany for the fast-paced metropolitan pleasures of Parisian life.

In essence, he wants the same creative community that Jacques outgrew ages ago,...

Beloved radio host Delilah says her "heart is struggling to continue to beat" as she mourns the death of her son, Zachariah.

The 57-year-old radio personality took to Facebook on Oct. 12 to pay tribute to the memory of her late son, who took his own life early this month after a long battle with depression.

The grieving mother shared a number of childhood photos of her late son, along with a poem written by Mary Jean Irion: "Normal day, let me be aware of the treasure you are. Let me learn from you, love you, bless you before you depart. Let me not pass you by in quest of some rare and perfect tomorrow. Let me hold you while I may, for it may not always be so. One day I shall dig my nails into the earth, or bury my face in the pillow, or stretch myself taut, or raise my hands to the sky and want...

Kelly Clarkson
Kelly Clarkson isn't afraid to speak out on anything.

In a new interview with Variety, the American Idol alum detailed her feud with RCA Records head and music mogul Clive Davis, which goes all the way back to 2004, when they disagreed over the direction of her music.

The trouble began when Clarkson and Davis argued over a song she wrote, "Because of You," on her second album Breakaway. “I was told that was a sh**ty song because it didn’t rhyme,” Clarkson said, adding that the harsh decision was delivered during a meeting.

"A group of men thought it was Ok to sit around a young woman and bully her. I was told I should shut up and sing," she continued.

Kings Of Leon Debut New Track “Around The World”
On the surface, Kings of Leon’s new album title may seem a little bland, but it’s really more intricate than you think. Though the record is called Walls, the band isn’t necessarily referring to what divides a room – it’s actually an acronym for We Are Like Love Songs. The title makes a lot more sense in context with the album’s musical content, which we’ve been able to hear a couple songs from already. Recently, the band gave everyone another taste of what’s to come in the form of the song “Around the World.”

“Around the World” has already existed in a live setting when the band played it last month on Later … With Jools Holland, but they breathe new life into it with its studio version. The Walls version ultimately packs a bigger punch with even crisper pop sensibilities, and with adventurous musicianship and catchy hooks galore,...
