I saw this movie on Netflix recently, and I'm shocked it has no reviews yet, so I felt I had to share my thoughts. It's a shame that not many people know about this film. If you enjoy indie films, you'll love this hidden gem. It delivers a mix of romance, suspense, and character-driven storytelling in a subtle but engaging way.
The movie follows a reporter named Lydia (Barbara King) who's unsure about her marriage to her fiancé, so she accompanies her friend Pamlyn (Yoriko Haraguchi) to a speed dating event and unexpectedly meets an art dealer Marcus (John Krisiukenas). Lydia starts talking to him more and they become friends. However, things soon get complicated when Lydia is asked to interview an Asian woman who fled to New York and reveals that her friend has been missing for weeks. Lydia, Pamlyn, and Marcus then begin to investigate the disappearance of the woman and find a disturbing link between her disappearance and that of another missing woman that sets them into a tense journey full of twists!
There are several intriguing plot twists throughout the movie that will keep you engaged, and you will enjoy the movie from start to finish. The friendship between Lydia and Pamlyn is pure and heartwarming, and both actresses deliver great performances. Soon enough, the matchmaker who organized the speed dating event (Shaana Diya) gets involved too, and from there only more plot twists come!
I also loved the background music, and how the simple, lower budget filming still managed to be effective! The film also deserves credit for exploring themes of human trafficking while keeping the plot character-driven and not overly dark.
It's not perfect - I wish the antagonist had been developed a bit more or having a longer runtime to expand on certain plot points, but overall a good film.
What happened to these missing women? Will Lydia stay with her fiancé or grow closer to Marcus? You'll have to watch to find out, and you won't be disappointed!
