This Comedian Played Two Different Roles in 'The Big Bang Theory' Universe
Image
Chuck Lorre's Big Bang Theoryuniverse has tons of celebrity cameos throughout the original sitcom and its prequel spin-offs. Of course, considering the series mostly centers on a group of oddball geeks, these minor guest stars typically include famous nerd-culture heroes like Star Wars' Mark Hamill, comic-book legend Stan Lee, and Trekkie Sheldon's favorite half-human, half-vulcan on the USS Enterprise, Leonard Nimoy. While there are plenty of funny and sentimental special appearances like these, not many stars have been brought back to play multiple roles.

One of those lucky few is famous comedian and silent-performer, Teller of the magic duo Penn and Teller. In the main series, Teller takes on the role of Amy's father, Larry Fowler, along with acting icon Kathy Bates as her mother. The two make for a hilarious pair as Sheldon tries to bond with them both on the show, but there's one problem with it:...

Suncoast Review: Misplacing Its Priorities, Laura Chinn’s Coming-of-Age Tale Falls Into Cliché
Laura Chinn at an event for Suncoast (2024)
Laura Chinn’s directorial debut, Suncoast, is based on the filmmaker’s own experience growing up in Florida in the early 2000s, when her younger brother, blind and deaf and in a wheelchair from brain cancer, was placed in the same hospice center that Terri Schiavo was at. It’s a harrowing story that Chinn detailed in her 2022 memoir titled Acne.

The contrast between the media circus and heated protests surrounding Schiavo’s case and the private suffering of a family—Kristine (Laura Linney) and her teenage daughter, Doris (Nico Parker)—who’s been saying a very long goodbye to Max (Cree Kawa) for nearly a decade, should have orchestrated a riveting tension. Instead, the Schiavo case is a barely felt presence, serving only to bring Doris, exhausted by years of helping care for her brother under the watch of her overbearing mother, into the orbit of Paul (Woody Harrelson...

Suncoast: Everything We Know So Far About The Laura Linney, Woody Harrelson Drama
Image
Laura Chinn has written for projects like "The Mick," "Children's Hospital," and "Florida Girls," which she created and starred in. She's also acted in projects like "Happy Endings," and "Warrior." If that wasn't enough, Chinn had a script selected for 2020's The Black List, a grouping of all the unproduced scripts of note from that year. That script is set to become the upcoming drama film "Suncoast," which will serve as Chinn's directorial debut, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Production for the new film will begin in September through Searchlight Pictures, with a number of big-name actors signing on for roles, including Woody Harrelson and Laura Linney. Laura Chinn recently published her memoir entitled "Acne" through Hachette Books, which scored a review blurb from Tina Fey ("30 Rock") on the cover.

Here is everything we know so far about the film "Suncoast."

What We Think Suncoast Will Be About

The script for "Suncoast" is,...

Academy Award nominees Laura Linney and Woody Harrelson and rising actress Nico Parker, who appeared in the live-action remake of Dumbo, are set to star in Suncoast, a drama written and set to be directed by Laura Chinn, in what will be her directorial debut.

Searchlight has boarded the project, which made the 2020 Black List, with production scheduled to begin in September.

Jeremy Plager, Francesca Silvestri, Kevin Chinoy and Oly Obst are producing the feature.

Suncoast is inspired by Chinn’s own life experience from the early 2000s and follows a teenager (Parker) living with her strong-willed mother (Linney), who must take her brother to live at a specialized facility. There, she strikes up an unlikely friendship with an eccentric activist (Harrelson) amid protests surrounding controversial medical cases.

The project will be overseen by Searchlight senior vp production Taylor Friedman and manager of creative affairs Daniel Yu,...

The Present, The Past, & The Fantasy: Discussing "The Apostate" with Federico Veiroj
It's been half a decade since we last heard from Uruguayan director Federico Veiroj. In 2010 he followed his feature debut Acné with the small, elegiac and lovely A Useful Life, about an aging cinematheque programmer in Montevideo. If you, like myself, have often wondered when we’d get another cinematic novella from this observant, sensitive filmmaker, the answer is now: the director has returned with The Apostate, another modest and deceptively tidy character study of an out-of-sorts, out-of-time man. Gonzalo Tamayo, played with a sleepy-eyed, disheveled and lax handsomeness by non-professional Alvaro Ogalla, decides to apostatize from the Spanish Catholic church. After being raised (involuntarily, Gonzalo says) Catholic by his parents, failing at seemingly every stage of his education, pining for his beautiful cousin who’s already in a relationship, and running vaguely illicit-seeming errands for his never-seen father, Gonzalo seems sick of it all—and his act of rebellion...

Cinema Is Dead / Long Live Cinema: A Conversation with Federico Veiroj
Uruguayan filmmaker Federico Veiroj was born in Montevideo in 1976. In 2000 he obtained a Degree in Social Communication at the Catholic University in Montevideo, coursing one semester at Vcu (Virginia Commonwealth University, USA). He has been directing and producing short-films since 1996. He has also worked as an actor in many Uruguayan short-films and as script supervisor in Juan Pablo Rebella and Pablo Stoll's features 25 Watts and Whisky. He has followed up his first feature film Acné with the cinephilic valentine A Useful Life (La vida útil, 2010).

A Useful Life was the first film at the 2010 Toronto International Film Festival I heard applauded at its press screening, confirming as Diana Sanchez had written in her program capsule that "for anyone who loves cinema in its purest form, this film will be a revelation." As Sanchez synopsized: "Federico Veiroj's thoughtful and delicate second feature contemplates the value of outmoded occupations with this evocative (and alarming!

Toronto film festival follows Cannes' lead
Laurent Cantet at an event for Bienvenidas al paraíso (2005)
TORONTO -- The Toronto International Film Festival made way for some Cannes heavyweights Thursday, unveiling Special Presentation slots for Laurent Cantet's Palme d'Or winner The Class and Matteo Garrone's Grand Prix winner Gomorrah among a group of about two dozen North American premieres.

Arnaud Desplechin's Un conte de Noel and Canadian helmer Atom Egoyan's Adoration -- both Cannes Competition titles -- also will get the red-carpet treatment in Toronto, alongside South Korean filmmaker Kim Jee-woon's Out of Competition "The Good, the Bad and the Weird."

Other Cannes entries making their Canadian splash include the Dardennes brothers' Lorna's Silence, best screenplay winner in Cannes; Jerzy Skolimowksi's Four Nights With Anna; Terence Davies' Of Time and the City; Jia Zhang-ke's 24 City; and Three Monkeys, which earned director Nuri Bilge Ceylan the best director trophy.

The quintet has been programmed as part of Toronto's Masters sidebar.

On the documentary side, films headed for Toronto include Blind Loves, from Slovakian director Juraj Lehotsky, Lisandro Alonso's Liverpool and Service, by Brillante Mendoza.

Cannes Competition titles from Brazil -- Walter Salles and Daniela Thomas' Linha de Passe and Pablo Trapero's Lion's Den -- headline a Contemporary World Cinema sidebar that includes Federico Veiroj's Acne, Bent Hamer's O'Horten, Amos Kollek's Restless and Gotz Spielmann's Revanche.

The Discovery program will feature Steve McQueen's Hunger, which earned the Camera d'Or in Cannes, U.S.

Best Bets Cannes 08: Director's Fortnight section
  • Highlighted by the presence of Jim Jarmusch (who will be receiving a special award called the Carrosse d’Or), the 40th year of the Director's Fortnight doesn't look as strong on paper as the previous edition, but the quality of this year's fair will be better determined in ten days or so. Containing a good amount of French productions, the section offers many first time efforts from filmmakers who get to tell their children that they took part in an event that showcases auteur cinema from the greats. Here are five to look out for. Boogie (Radu Muntean) It seems that every year a Romanian film shows up at Cannes andt steals the thunder away from other eastern European producing countries. After her career-defining role in 4 months..., Anamaria Marinca next stars in Radu Muntean's portrait - think a coming-of-age film for a grown up male who hasn't got his yeah yeahs out.

Cannes 08: Director's Fortnight Line Up filled with French fair
  • Offering no shortage of world premieres from auteur filmmakers, the 40th edition of the Directors’ Fortnight contains exactly half of the films being produced or co-produced from the fest’s home turf, this year it will be a mostly French affair. Among the more popular names we find the festival opener slot (announced yesterday) belonging to the long-awaited return of Jerzy Skolimowski and his latest and we also find the likes of former folk who’ve contributed to the section in the past: Joachim Lafosse (Private Property) and Bertrand Bonello (Tiresia) and Claire Simon (Ça brûle). A common meeting place for auteur cinema, a special film was designed to recall the history of the section with testimonies from a who's who of favorite directors in Todd Haynes, Jacques Rozier, Costa Gavras, Michael Raeburn, Ken Loach, Alain Tanner, Carlos Diegues, Werner Herzog, Theo Angelopoulos, André Téchiné, Chantal Akerman, the Taviani brothers,
