Mötley Crüe (as their logo is stylized with umlauts) are an American heavy metal/glam rock band that formed in Los Angeles, California in 1981. The principle original lineup were Vince Neil (lead vocals), Nikki Sixx (born Frank Carlton Serafino Feranna, Jr, bassist), Tommy Lee (drums) and Mick Mars (born Robert Deal, guitar). The band rose quickly from the LA rock underground to become one of the biggest heavy metal acts of the 1980s and early 1990s with elaborate stage shows and constant touring. The Crue were also know for their hedonistic lifestyle that often involved drug and alcohol abuse and cavorting with their female fans. With the rise of the Seattle sound (aka grunge rock) in the early 90s, the Crue's style fell out of favor and the band enjoyed only moderate success. Neil became the first member to leave the band, followed by Lee in 1999, who tried his hand at a solo career.
