Affected

The film assumes the point of view of a emotionally overwrought woman shown in real-time. You aren't sure if you're starting at the end or the beginning (or both) of the story, but you are completely taken in by the crisp, artsy black-and-white imagery, and the sounds that are this woman's world. You become her eyes and ears. You can even hear her breathing. Welter keeps us wondering about what exactly happened, without giving too much away. It's not until the end that the viewer is confronted with the woman's disturbing problem... (I don't want to give too much away.) I think the what makes this film so compelling is the way Welter portrays the character with such sensitivity-- we know from the woman's surroundings that she is no one very special. Yet, her emotional state and situation are extraordinary, although others around her (the man on the corner) may not recognize it. Kudos to Welter for giving a ordinary woman a voice to be heard!
