Begegnung mit Werner Schroeter

April so happens to be one of my favourite filmmakers birthday and also his month of death, so I decided to spend weeks sofa binging on Werner Schroeter's (7 April 1945 - 12 April 2010) films. I revisited his top shelf masterpieces along with the kitschy cult classics. I had watched Monika Treut's Ghosted (2009) and i'm glad I took the time to go through her filmography to find this title i'm reviewing. Felt that I've slept on this for far too long and it was a pleasant surprise. This 14 minutes with Werner Schroeter is really personal as Monika Treut pays a visit on the set of his feature "Deux" in France, and in Düsseldorf during the production of the opera "Norma'. This works like a mini documentary which captures the some interesting and unknown stories of Werner Schroeter. The short features Director's Note sharing behind the scenes pictures of his films including The Death of Maria Malibran (1972). He shares information on the wild incidents during the shoot, it was funny to see him drop the car blowjob joke on legendary sound mixer Joaquim Pinto, a regular in João César Monteiro films. He speaks about the death of Candy Darling, and goes on talking about Carola Regnier, Mostefa Djadjam, Christine Kaufmann, Ingrid Caven and the famous opera shooting. This is strictly for the fans of the auteur and it's so interesting how he shows pictures together in the most perfectly chaotic whirlwind of making films at the time. Loved reminiscing the classics along with the notes from the man himself.
