first of all i......in case you guys didn't know, this one is th MOVIE version of 1 Litre of Tears, NOT the TV series one!!! The one with Erika is the TV series which they filmed at 2005,after the released of the MOVIE version(2004),and this one is the the MOVIE website... don't mess up
I think Asae Oeshi done a wonderful job by doing this role, she acts much better than the TV drama one. She may not pretty as Erika but she sure can act. They add a lot of conflicts and that "boyfriend" who didn't exist in the reality. This movie is more based on the reality, and all the acting are more realistic.
Please go watch it

i agree with the previous comment. i have not seen anything so sad for a long time. i'm not a guy who is really into Japanese drama/movie. but this show really changed my mind. i have to take back my words for my serious doubt about the acting. the movie carries a heart-warming message about appreciating every moments of our lives. Aya's only wish was "to live." By carefully depicting Aya's earnest desire to live, and the love of her family, friends, and lover. The drama, wishes to deliver her simple but strong message: "Just being alive is such a lovely and wonderful thing."
everyone, especially Erika Sawajiri and her family's acting was superb. i have to admit i cried a lot of times during the show. absolutely a touching Japanese drama series that should not be missed by anyone.
go watch it!

Contrary to what at least one person has said here, I think the TV series is way better than the movie. And this is also supported by the higher ratings the TV series has against this one (8.7, comprising of 2.5k evaluators against a score of 7.8 and 1.3k evaluators). The acting is better, the story and the script, the drama, the soundtrack... Basically everything is better, more detailed, poetic and dramatic. Don't know if the movie is indeed more faithful to the true story or not but who cares? Who said it has to be? It is not a documentary and arts doesn't have to be faithful to reality. The point is that the TV series delivers a way more powerful/ impactful message than the movie. If it was possible I would rate this movie 6.5 instead of 7 but 6 I think is not fair so I rated it 7.
This movie is most faithful to the book and the real story of Aya than the TV show with the same name. This film is beautiful, sad and at the same time full of hope, the girl never gave up even knowing that her disease was impossible to cure.Is also the story about a mother who does everything she is capable of to look after her daughter..the story tell us how painful love can be. the performances of the movie are brilliant, and the message is clear, don't give up, life is precious. it make us think how much we complain about unimportant things, when we must feel blessed by the gift of be alive.I saw that film before the show and i must admit that I love both

Ichi rittoru no namida (1 litre of tears)
This Japanese dorama is about a girl who was diagnosed with a disease called Spinocerebellar Degeneration when she was 15 years old, and was able to continue her life until her death at the age of 25 years old.
The plot is based on the true story of a Japanese girl named Kito Aya, who had the same disease. She kept writing in her diary to remember her experiences until she could no longer hold a pen. Aya simply wished to live until the end of her life, and the purpose of writing in the diary was to remind herself to not give up. She shed tears many times, at the same time encompassed by the rich love and support from her family, friends, and boyfriend. Her diary "1 Litre of Tears" was published after her death, because of its inspiring and courageous message of, "Just being alive is such a lovely and wonderful thing." So far, over 18,000,000 copies of her diary have been sold.
This J-dorama really made me cry at least 2 liters of tears! I have not for a long time seen anything this sad. Erika Sawajiri made a great personification of Aya. Truly touching story, and the music is wonderful. 11 episodes full of true feelings, love, sadness and family values. I strongly recommend this drama series to everyone!
