Doctor Who Leaves HBO Max: 5 Streaming Platforms That Deserve the Show More Than Disney+
Image
Doctor Who will reportedly leave HBO Max by the end of July, with its spinoff show Torchwood looking at an earlier exit from the streamer (via Inverse). The first thirteen seasons since the 2005 revival series, i.e., from Christopher Eccleston’s Doctor to Josie Whittaker’s, were available on HBO Max, with the last two seasons with Ncuti Gatwa streaming on Disney+.

The last two seasons have reportedly received lower ratings, with the latest 15th season having a whopping 1.7 million viewers, less than season 13. Many have speculated that Disney+ might not renew the deal with BBC and that Doctor Who would not only have to look for a new home for its existing seasons, but also for its upcoming ones.

While Disney+’s renewal looks dicey at the moment, the streamer might not be the best place for Doctor Who. The platform already has blockbuster franchises like Star Wars, MCU,...

'Black Doves' Star's New British Thriller Gets a "Toxic" First Look
Image
As Doctor Who's future remains more uncertain, one of its fondest spin-offs, Torchwood, which ended almost fifteen years ago, is seeing one of its stars return to our screens in a brand-new project with the BBC. Eve Myles, best known for her role as Gwen Cooper in the sci-fi series, is joining the next in a long line of British dramas, starring in The Guest alongside Black Doves' Gabrielle Creevy, a fellow Welsh actress also known for her role in another BBC series, In My Skin.

For the first time, as cited via Radio Times, both Myles and Creevy — as business owner Fran and her employee Ria, respectively — can be seen in the upcoming The Guest in a trio of first-look images available below. The series, scheduled for release later this year, is the brainchild of multi-award-winning writer Matthew Barry, best known for his work on the likes of Men Up,...

Did You Know? Peter Capaldi Played 2 Other Characters in Doctor Who
Image
Peter Capaldi reportedly played two characters in the Doctor Who universe before he was cast as the Twelfth Doctor. Revived by Steven Moffat, the sci-fi show Doctor Who went through several actors in the role, with Capaldi taking over from Matt Smith as the Eleventh Doctor. However, before he became the Time Lord, he was in the franchise more than once.

Capaldi reportedly played Lobus Caecilius in the fourth series of the revival, with David Tennant as the Doctor. The show also addressed how the Twelfth Doctor had Lobus’ likeness. Capaldi also played another role in the Doctor Who franchise, in the spinoff series Torchwood. He played an antagonistic character in the show.

Before Doctor Who, Peter Capaldi Played An Eerily Similar Doctor In A Box Office Hit
Image
The revived "Doctor Who" has mostly cast young (or young-ish) actors for its lead role as the Doctor. The benefit of this approach is that the young actor feels fresh to the audience; for instance, Matt Smith was almost completely unknown before being cast as the 11th Doctor, so fans didn't have any baggage from his previous roles affecting their judgment of him.

But fans having a pre-existing relationship with the new actor playing the Doctor isn't necessarily a bad thing. When Peter Capaldi was cast as the 12th Doctor, he was already known for a dozen other memorable roles, a couple of which even happened within the "Doctor Who" universe. On top of that, he had already played a doctor in "World War Z," specifically one who works for the World Health Organization. That's correct: Before Capaldi starred in "Doctor Who," he portrayed a doctor for W.H.O.

Doctor Who Season 2, Episode 5 Features The Surprise Return Of The Doctor You Forgot
Image
This article contains spoilers for "Doctor Who" season 2, episode 5, "The Story & The Engine."

"Doctor Who" season 2, episode 5 -- titled "The Story & The Engine" -- continues the show's current trend of combining copious winks and nudges with genuinely heartfelt stories that are the cornerstone of showrunner Russell T Davies' tenure. This time, the 15th Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa) finds himself in Lagos. There, his friend Omo's (Sule Rimi of "Andor" and "The Day of the Jackal" fame) barbershop has been taken over by the mysterious and hostile Barber and his accomplice, Abena. After the Doctor enters the shop and finds that he and several locals have been trapped inside and have to fuel the Barber's mysterious machines with their stories, the plot truly kicks in.

The Barber first attempts to introduce himself as the God of Stories, which would imply that he's the newest member of the ever-expanding Pantheon of Discord. However,...

Words of War Review — A Powerful but Straightforward Slice of Injustice
Image
Words of War has everything you want in a film about a David-like journalist fighting a Goliath. The movie begins as a story of someone trying to make a name for herself after spending her entire adult life in the shadows of her profession. What it ultimately reveals, however, is not a blurred line between good and evil but one that is sharply defined with dire consequences.

Words of War follows the history of a Russian reporter and how their notable reputation became cemented in history, believing that a job is more than a job but a profession with a higher purpose. That’s even if her peers, family, and friends knew their reporting came with a toxic warning label. The result is a conventional and standard telling of an incredible real-life figure.

Who Plays Teddy Lockwood In Netflix's You Season 5
Image
This post contains spoilers for "You" season 5.

In the "Succession"-flavored final season of Netflix's "You," the Lockwood family is a moral cesspool — with one exception. While the other siblings and in-laws are all viciously fighting for power or recognition, Teddy Lockwood (Griffin Matthews), the half-sibling to Joe's wife Kate (Charlotte Ritchie) and twins Reagan and Maddie, is just trying to keep a foothold at the company his racist father helped build. As a Black, gay man whose conception was fraught at best, Teddy is frank about how the melodramatic power plays and murder schemes that make "You" so fun to watch could impact him much differently than his white, old money counterparts.

Teddy is a breath of fresh air, and spends a good chunk of the season as one of the most morally spotless characters in Joe's world. If we keep the parallel to HBO's "Succession" going (and...

Kevin Feige May be Off to Lucasfilm and Doctor Who Fans Know Exactly Who Should Replace Him

Kevin Feige's work at Marvel Studios has been remarkable, ushering the comic book studio into conquering the cinematic realm. He has become one of the most successful film producers of all time, having brought 35 comic book films to the big screen. There are many other shared universes, but none have been able to achieve the same heights that Kevin Feige got to with the MCU.

Kathleen Kennedy has similarly worked wonders at Lucasfilm. Through her leadership, she has overseen several Star Wars movies and TV Shows, as well as all five Indiana Jones films. Although she has faced some considerable backlash from Star Wars fans, her work has generally been well-received by critics, with The Mandalorian and Star Wars: The Force Awakens...

The 15 Best Shark Movies Of All Time, Ranked
Image
As the poet Tracy Jordan once told Kenneth the Page, "Here's some advice I wish I would have got when I was your age: Live every week like it's Shark Week." The "30 Rock" legend was referring to the Discovery Channel's yearly celebration of all things shark, a programming event where they fill every hour of airtime with nature specials about the terribly toothy monsters. There are enough fictional movies about sharks, however, that you can easily live every single day like it's Shark Day.

If we're being honest, though, many shark movies are pretty bad. That's what made SyFy's "Sharknado" franchise so good -- at least for the first few movies. The franchise expertly skewered shark movies made on the cheap, celebrating questionable CGI as something to be cheered rather than jeered. Shark movie fans know that we have to put up with a garbage to find a gem.

Andrew Lincoln Has a Bloody Mess To Clean Up in ‘Cold Water’ First Look

If you only know him from his long-running role as Rick Grimes on AMC’s smash-hit series, The Walking Dead, you probably have no idea that the man behind the badge — Andrew Lincoln— is English. For his next role, not only will he be embracing his natural accent, but he’ll be kicking it back to the good ol’ days of his career, when he takes the lead of ITV’s upcoming thriller miniseries, Cold Water. A brand-new first-look image showcases the television production, which was announced all the way back in the summer and is set for an arrival later this year. 5 James Bond Spin-Offs That Could Happen After The Amazon Deal
Image
It feels sacrilegious to imagine the development of any James Bond film without ambassadors Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli at the helm, but as of today, the future of James Bond has been placed solely within the oversight of Amazon MGM Studios. There are a whole number of consequences that come with this decision. It ensures that there will be another Bond film down the line, sooner than later probably, but at the same time, it will be one whose creative decisions will likely be made based on algorithmic trends instead of being filtered through the interests and taste of people who have shepherded these movies for decades. What's even worse is now that 007 is fully under Amazon's control, that means there's no more holdouts on the prospects of greenlighting spin-offs galore.

Amazon has technically tested the waters already with "007: Road to a Million," a reality adventure...

Doctor Who Star Explains Why Martha Jones' Return Was Canceled
Image
Former Doctor Who star Freema Agyeman has revealed why a return for her character Martha Jones was scrapped. Martha was the Tenth Doctor's main companion in Doctor Who's third season, where she traveled the world amassing forces to help free humanity from The Master's enslavement.

Martha was then brought back as part of an all-star team of former Doctor Who companions in season four's two part finale, where Ten (David Tennant) and Donna Noble (Catherine Tate) called all of their friends together to fight off a Dalek invasion of earth. These episodes saw Martha seemingly being recruited by Captain Jack Harkness (John Barrowman) to join his black-ops team, though full-time appearances in the Torchwood spinoff series never materialized.

The 15 Best Rose Tyler Episodes on Doctor Who, Ranked
Image
Doctor Who's Rose Tyler was played by Billie Piper and was a fascinating character. She encountered the Doctor after an alien attack on the shop where she worked, and she fell completely in love with him. She left her mother Jackie and boyfriend Mickey behind as she traveled with him throughout time and space, dodging dangers and sometimes barely escaping with her life.

Rose had many good qualities, such as being kind, brave, and smart, but she also had some bad ones. She often didn't consider the feelings of others, and there were times when she was blinded by her love for the Doctor. Her best episodes showed off all these sides of Rose's personality.

Doctor Who boss Russell T Davies says new spinoff is still "far from transmission"
Image
The Doctor Who franchise has had a lot of success through spinoffs over the years. From Torchwood to The Sarah Jane Adventures, the Whoniverse has explored everything from mature themes to family-friendly fun. Up next is The War Between the Land and the Sea, a high-stakes series featuring the return of classic villains: the Sea Devils!

The War Between the Land and the Sea began filming in August 2024. Created by Russell T. Davies and Pete McTighe, the five-episode series marks the return of some series favorites: Unit's Kate Lehbridge-Stuart (Jemma Redgrave), Shirley Anne Bingham (Ruth Madely) and Torchwood's General Pierce (Colin McFarlane). New cast members include: Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Russell Tovey, and Alexander Devrient. Ncuti Gatwa's Fifteenth Doctor is not expected to feature, but we could be surprised.

The series is poised to be the highest-stakes spinoff yet, with the Sea Devils waging war on the world. The...

The War Between The Land And The Sea: Everything We Know About The Doctor Who Spinoff
Image
The Disney era of Doctor Who is only just beginning, and the franchise is already expanding through spinoffs like The War Between the Land and the Sea. As a science fiction phenomenon, the six-decades-old Doctor Who needs little introduction, but it follows an alien Time Lord who travels through space and time in their Tardis facing aliens, monsters, and various other intergalactic threats. Ncuti Gatwa assumed the role of The Doctor in late 2023, but the main series is only just the beginning of the new era of Doctor Who.

Doctor Who is no stranger to spinoffs, and popular shows like Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures proved that nearly every corner of the Whoniverse was ripe for exploration. The Doctor Who spinoff Tales of the Tardis has begun a new era of expansion within the franchise, but the horizons are even more vast. The War Between the Land and the...

Doctor Who's Russell T. Davies Wants To Bring 1 Bridgerton & Wicked Star Back In The Show's Future
Image
While his appearances in Bridgerton and Wicked have made him a household name, Russell T Davies hopes to bring Jonathan Bailey to Doctor Who in an all-new role. Before joining Netflix's period drama as Anthony Bridgerton, Bailey portrayed Psi in the Doctor Who season 8 episode Time Heist, alongside Peter Capaldi's Twelfth Doctor and Jenna Coleman's Clara Oswald. At the time of writing, Bailey had soared onto the big screen as Prince Fiyero in Wicked, the shallow student Cynthia Erivo's Elphaba encounters in her studies at Shiz University.

Recently, Davies revealed to Screen Rant that he hopes to bring Bailey back to the Whoniverse after recruiting Bridgerton co-star Nicola Coughlan to star in Doctor Who's 2024 Christmas special. Highlighting Adjoa Adoh's dual Whoniverse roles as a precedent for bringing back multiple actors, Davies shared that he hopes to encourage Bailey to return after briefly spending time with...

Peter Capaldi's Doctor Who Return Stance Makes Him The New Tom Baker & Christopher Eccleston
Image
Peter Capaldi’s stance on a possible return to Doctor Who places him in the same boat as Tom Baker and Christopher Eccleston. Peter Capaldi joined a long line of actors who played “Doctor Who” as he appeared in the British sci-fi show from 2014-2017 as the Twelfth Doctor. As of 2024, the Time Lord has gone through three regenerations since, and Ncuti Gatwa was cast as the Fifteenth Doctor for season 14. Considering most actors can only dream of playing the famous character, it is surprising that Peter Capaldi has stated that he doesn’t want to return to Doctor Who.

Doctor Who is confirmed to return for season 15 in May 2025 under its new network, Disney+. The show previously aired on BBC from 2005 onwards and encompassed the reign of Peter Capaldi, who delivered the oldest version of the Doctor since Classic Doctor Who. Capaldi also appeared in Doctor Who before being cast as the Twelfth Doctor,...

Peter Capaldi says he'll never return to Doctor Who, but is still a "huge fan"
Image
Peter Capaldi portrayed the 12th Doctor in 39 episodes of Doctor Who, from 2013 to 2017. His run was a mixed bag, but fans still look back on his era with good memories. And unlike previous Doctors David Tennant and Matt Smith, Capaldi has not reprised his role for a cameo since leaving, and he doesn't really have any inclination to do so.

What Capaldi has over other Doctors is a rich history of playing other characters throughout the Whoniverse. Way back in 2008, he played Roman merchant Caecilius in "The Fires of Pompeii," opposite David Tennant's version of the Doctor. And then a year later he played key character John Frobisher on spinoff series Torchwood: Children of Earth.

Given Capaldi's tendencies to keep coming back to Doctor Who, fans are hoping he'll one day make a triumphant return as the Doctor himself. In the Whoniverse, anything is possible. I mean, David Tennant returned...

Doctor Who Season 15 Must Avoid Making Ruby Sunday "The New Martha"
Image
Following the conclusion of Ruby Sundays story in season 14 of Doctor Who, it is really important that season 15 doesnt leave her with the same fate as another one of The Doctors companions. Martha was the main companion traveling with the tenth Doctor in the shows third season, before Martha decided to leave Doctor Who following the season 3 finale, only for her to return as a guest in the franchise's subsequent installment. Marthas story has quite a few similarities with Rubys, as Ruby also decided to leave The Doctor after her first season of traveling with him.

Similar to Marthas story, Milly Gibson has been confirmed to return to join The Doctor and new companion played by Varada Sethu in season 15, despite leaving at the end of the shows fourteenth season. It hasnt been confirmed whether or not Ruby will play a major role in the upcoming season or if she...

Here’s When Alexa Havins Debuts As Lulu On General Hospital
Image
The anticipation for Lulu’s return on General Hospital is high. After a bomb destroyed the Floating Rib restaurant in 2020, Lulu — then played by Emme Rylan — ended up in a coma. Ever since, she has been in a long-term care facility. But the meds she was given took a toll on her liver. So, she underwent a risky transplant operation. The donor, Sam, died from a heart attack while in recovery, and Lulu’s mom, Laura, has been begging her daughter to emerge from her comatose state. Lulu’s return is imminent, and we now know when Alexa Havins will officially take on the role. And it’s just around the corner.

The Time Is Imminent

Because Sam (Kelly Monaco) died and the hospital wants to transfer Lulu back to the care facility, Laura has been at her daughter’s side begging for her to awaken so that Sam’s death would mean something.

Colin Teague To Direct ‘Esaaf’, Debut Film From Saudi Star Ibrahim Al Hajjaj, Talal Anazi & Former Mbc Studios Boss Peter Smith
Image
Exclusive: Colin Teague is signed on to direct Esaaf (working title), a debut Saudi Arabian comedy feature from local star Ibrahim Al Hajjaj and former Mbc Studios boss Peter Smith.

The film, which is currently shooting on location, follows two incompetent paramedics completely out of their depth, who unwittingly become embroiled in a kidnapping plot. It marks the debut film of Al Hajjaj’s House of Comedy and Talal Anazi’s Black Light operations. The two companies will jointly own the rights, with Smith onboard as an executive producer.

BAFTA nominee Teague is no stranger to Saudi production, having directed the Tony Jordan-penned Mbc Studios series Rashash and another big-budget Jordan drama, The Devil’s Promise two years ago. He’s known as the first person to direct episodes of Doctor Who and spin-off Torchwood and has credits for The White Queen, Being Human and Da Vinci’s Demons.

Smith, meanwhile,...

'Something New to Say': The Radleys Director Euros Lyn on His Vampire Movie
Image
Vampires may be the stars of The Radleys, but the movie's biggest surprises come at home. The adaptation of Matt Haig's novel aims to blend horror scares with family drama -- and the man responsible for balancing those two ideas is director Euros Lyn. A genre veteran, Lyn is known for helming episodes of Doctor Who and its spinoff Torchwood, as well as the Black Mirror installment "Fifteen Million Merits." That makes him the perfect person to play with genre expectations.

With The Radleys now streaming, Cbr spoke to Lyn about the making of this quirky film. He discussed why he feels it stands out amongst so many other vampire movies and what appeals to him about working in the horror and science fiction space. Plus, learn how he re-teamed with actor Damian Lewis to get not one, but two great performances out of one of Britain's best actors.

'Really Good Fun': Damian Lewis Vamps Out for Horror Movie The Radleys
Image
The Radleys is Damian Lewis as audiences have never seen him before. The award-winning actor is known for intense, often intimidating roles like the ill-fated Nicholas Brody in Showtime's frenetic drama Homeland, or ruthless businessman Bobby Axelrod in Billions. But the horror flick sees him playing an over the top vampire... and the vampire's twin brother.

Cbr spoke to Lewis about what attracted him to the British horror comedy, based on Matt Haig's novel of the same name. He discussed the challenges of playing both Will Radley and Will's straight-laced brother Peter, who just wants to raise his family in peace (and of course gets a lot more than he bargained for). Plus, hear why Lewis considers The Radleys much more than a vampire movie.

Cbr: Your best-known roles are very serious characters in projects like Homeland, Billions and Wolf Hall. How fun was it to break away from...

10 Spinoffs Ways Darker Than The Movies & TV Shows They Were Based On
Image
The 21st century has been an era of sequels, reboots, and spinoffs. While these projects have saturated the market for many years, some are worth checking out. One of the reasons that a spinoff could find unexpected success without imitating the original movie or TV show is by incorporating darker and more intense storylines. Since a spinoff doesn't have the pressure and expectations that the original film or series might face, it can experiment with style and tone to exciting results. A good spinoff will root itself within the story's universe while working to stand alone as an individual project.

When many of the best legacy movie sequels differentiate themselves by going down a darker path, this could mean that more mature and adult themes will play a large part in the project. This makes sense, as when a TV show takes on a more serious tone, more emotional strife...

9 Upcoming TV Spinoffs We're Very Excited About
Image
With Hollywood's focus on building up successful IPs, there are a lot of new TV show spin-offs in the pipeline, with plenty that could be really special. Spin-offs are nothing new. As far back as popular TV exists, there are TV show spin-offs that follow connected characters and build out the world from a new direction. While initially, this was typical for comedy shows like Cheers, Happy Days, and The Tracy Ullman Show which spawned equally, and occasionally more successful spin-offs like Fraiser, Mork & Mindy, and The Simpsons, spin-offs have evolved.

Now, spin-offs keep up their connections with the original series to some degree, and they enhance and enrich the story from the original series. Whether that means expanding the story of Saul Goodman to see how his life led him up to the events of Breaking Bad in Better Call Saul, or picking up the story that was left...

Alexa Havins Joining ‘General Hospital’ As Recast Lulu Spencer
Image
After an exhaustive casting search, it looks like “General Hospital” has finally found its new Lulu Spencer.

Daytime Confidential reports that the ABC daytime drama series has hired “All My Children” alum Alexa Havins (ex-Babe Chandler) to portray the daughter of Luke and Laura Spencer (Genie Francis and Anthony Geary), and the younger sister of Lucky Spencer (Jonathan Jackson).

Since Daytime Confidential‘s reporting, TV Line has confirmed Havins has been cast as Lulu.

Last played by Emme Rylan, the return of Lulu marks a turning point for the character who was placed in a coma in 2020 when an explosion at the Floating Rib left several others injured and caused the deaths of Lulu’s love interest at the time, Dustin Phillips (Mark Lawson), and teenager Dev Cerci (Ashton Arbab).

Although a return date has not been announced, recent episodes of the series have seen a body double taking the...

18 Years Later, Doctor Who Is Still Paying for This Huge Spinoff Mistake
Image
Doctor Who is widely regarded as one of the most successful franchises in history, and with its new home on Disney+, it seems that this success will grow exponentially. Whether they became fans in the early 1960s or tuned in during the 2005 reboot, Doctor Who is a very accessible show, and fans have a lot of content to sink their teeth into. Therefore, the franchise continues to be loved by fans, and the 60-year-old show presents no signs of slowing down.

Alongside countless episodes, the franchise has also released a handful of spin-offs, including Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures. Although the show has the potential to expand its universe even further, only a few ideas make it onto television. Yet, one project from the mid-2000s got very close to the production stage but was called off at the last moment very unexpectedly. Rose Tyler: Earth Defence would have...

Criminal Record | Crime drama renewed for second series at Apple
Peter Capaldi
Apple TV+ has renewed the Peter Capaldi and Cush Jumbo crime drama Criminal Record for a second series, here are the details.

Peter Capaldi and Cush Jumbo first met onscreen in the poweful, haunting third series of Torchwood: Children Of Earth, which remains one of the most chilling stories ever connected to Doctor Who.

Criminal Record, which premiered on Apple TV+ last year, followed Jumbo and Capaldi as June Lenker and Daniel Hegarty, two police officers who clash violently over their opposing approaches to police work, as an anonymous phone call draws them both into an old murder case.

It’s now been announced that the crime drama has been renewed for a second series on Apple TV+. The synopsis, via Variety, reads as follows:

June Lenker is set as the senior officer on the scene when far-right counter-protesters attack a political rally. The clash leaves a young man dead,...

Doctor Who's New Show Must Follow The Golden Rule Moffat's Failed Spinoff Ignored
Image
The new Doctor Who spinoff must differentiate itself to avoid a short-lived fate like a Moffat-era show. The new spinoff's cast, led by returning actors, brings intrigue but may not guarantee long-term success. The War Between the Land and Sea must be distinctive yet fit in with the Doctor Who universe.

The War Between the Land and Sea needs to take certain steps to increase its chances of success, or it could meet the same fate as a Doctor Who spinoff from the Steven Moffat era. While the upcoming project has a confirmed premise, there's still a lot to learn about what the latest edition to the Doctor Who franchise will be like. The War Between the Land and Sea's cast will be led by returning Doctor Who actors Russell Tobey and Gugu Mbatha-Raw, but showrunner Russell T Davies has already confirmed they won't be reprising their previous roles.

The War Between the Land and the Sea | Doctor Who spin-off announced
Christopher Eccleston, Peter Capaldi, David Tennant, Matt Smith, and Jodie Whittaker in Doctor Who (2005)
The BBC has confirmed that Doctor Who spin-off The War Between The Land and the Sea will begin filming later this year. Here are the details.

When Russell T Davies came back to Doctor Who, one of the first things he mentioned was the idea of building a Whoniverse, where Doctor Who and associated spin-offs would all come under one banner.

The Whoniverse launched on iPlayer last year, and it included all surviving episodes of Classic Who and every episode of New Who, plus all the spin-offs like Torchwood, The Sarah Jane Adventures and even K-9 and Company. Every episode of Confidential is available to watch, along with a wealth of material from the BBC archive. Tales of the Tardis was a lovely treat too.

But what Doctor Who fans have been wondering ever since Davies returned was when he would launch a new spin-off. Rumours have been rife for months,...

My Hopes For Doctor Who's Most Wasted Companion Coming Back Were Just Crushed
Image
Martha Jones' return to an upcoming Doctor Who spinoff show is unlikely due to casting choices announced at San Diego Comic-Con 2024. Martha's character, underrated as a companion, may not make a comeback due to one specific reason. There may be canonical issues if Martha and a new character interact in The War Between the Land and Sea.

Doctor Who has officially announced its upcoming spinoff show at San Diego Comic-Con 2024, and while I'm excited for The War Between the Land and Sea, one casting choice essentially eliminates the possible return of a companion I've wanted to make a comeback for quite some time. After the news was delivered at the Doctor Who panel in San Diego, I immediately thought of a specific character, and how difficult it would now be for her to appear in the upcoming spinoff show. While it's still technically possible, I can't see it happening for...

‘Doctor Who’ Spin-Off ‘The War Between the Land and the Sea’ Heads to Disney+
Christopher Eccleston, Peter Capaldi, David Tennant, Matt Smith, and Jodie Whittaker in Doctor Who (2005)
“Doctor Who” is getting some friends.

Disney Branded Television and the BBC have jointly announced “The War Between the Land and the Sea,” an all-new spin-off of the classic British sci-fi series, at San Diego Comic Con. The five-part series is set to star Russell Tovey and Gugu Mbatha-Raw (already a Disney+ mainstay thanks to her role on “Loki”) alongside returning “Doctor Who” cast members Jemma Redgrave (as Kate Lethbridge-Stewart) and Alexander Devrient (as Colonel Ibrahim). Zounds!

The official synopsis reads: “When a fearsome and ancient species emerges from the ocean, dramatically revealing themselves to humanity, an international crisis is triggered. With the entire population at risk, Unit steps into action as the land and sea wage war.”

“The War Between the Land and the Sea” was created by current “Doctor Who” showrunner Russell T. Davies, who wrote the new series with Pete McTighe.

If you’re wondering who the “fearsome and ancient species” is,...

‘Doctor Who’ Spinoff Starring Russell Tovey & Gugu Mbatha-Raw Officially Set At BBC & Disney+
Image
Flush with new cash thanks to The Walt Disney Company, Doctor Who is getting another spinoff.

The BBC and Disney+ have ordered The War Between The Land And The Sea, a five-part spinoff series starring Russell Tovey and Gugu Mbatha-Raw alongside existing Doctor Who stars Jemma Redgrave and Alexander Devrient.

The War Between The Land And The Sea focuses on military organization Unit. Per the logline, when a fearsome and ancient species emerges from the ocean, dramatically revealing themselves to humanity, an international crisis is triggered. With the entire population at risk, Unit steps into action as the land and sea wage war.

Doctor Who showrunner and executive producer Russell T Davies wrote the spinoff with Pete McTighe (A Discovery of Witches) and it features the return of the Sea Devils, classic Doctor Who villains first seen in 1972. It comes after the spinoff was alluded to in the 73 Yards episode,...

Doctor Who & Torchwood Actor Is Open To Characters Return After 15 Years (Despite Being Dead)
Image
Gareth David-Lloyd is open to returning to Doctor Who. Ianto's impact on Doctor Who remains strong, with a shrine dedicated to him and discussions ongoing. David-Lloyd has kept Ianto alive through audio dramas, giving hope for a potential return to TV.

Despite the character Ianto Jones giving his life in Torchwood's "Children of Earth" storyline in 2009, Gareth David-Lloyd (Ianto) is still open to returning to Doctor Who's main series. Making his debut in the Doctor Who spinoff season 1 in 2006, Ianto was a Cardiff-based Torchwood Three team member and began as the by-the-book, no-nonsense member of the group who would open up about his past and feelings towards leader Jack Harkness. Ianto also appeared in the Doctor Who season 4 finale "The Stolen Earth/Journey's End" to help defend Earth from the Daleks.

Fifteen years after Ianto gave his life to attempt to save the world in Torchwood: Children of Earth - Day Four,...

Doctor Who's Sutekh Twist Makes You Fall For An Old Trick Rtd Used In 2005
Image
Davies' use of misdirection in Doctor Who season 14 mirrors his 2005 trick with the "Bad Wolf" clues, keeping audiences guessing until the big reveal. Anagrams like "Torchwood" in 2005 and "S Triad" in season 14 hint at key plot twists, leading fans on a wild goose chase before the truth is unveiled. Unit's reaction to the anagram clue serves as a clever meta moment, preparing viewers for a surprise twist while showcasing Davies' mastery of intricate storytelling.

Doctor Who showrunner Russell T. Davies used the same trick he did in 2005 to misdirect the audience before season 14's major twist. Davies is known for writing season-long mysteries; often, seemingly irrelevant information turns out to be a major clue. Many of his best Doctor Who stories involve misdirection, wordplay, or seemingly throwaway lines that are actually the key to unraveling the truth. Thus, it is difficult to guess what's important and what's meaningless in...

Doctor Who Season 14 Does Justice To A Forgotten Torchwood Character Killed Too Soon
Image
Warning: Spoilers ahead for Doctor Who season 14, episode 6, "Rogue."

A former spinoff actor makes Doctor Who return after 18 years in "Rogue." The new cast member previously starred in a mature spinoff show that wouldn't fit in Disney-era Doctor Who. Suzie Costello & the Duchess of Pemberton share a possible connection, hinting at shared ancestry.

Doctor Who season 14, episode 6, "Rogue," features an actor who has starred in another corner of the franchise, although her original role was incredibly brief. While Doctor Who is currently the only live-action property within the franchise, there was a time when spinoffs came relatively thick and fast. The additional TV shows differed in tone and target audience when compared with Doctor Who, but they contributed to the overall continuity all the same. "Rogue" finally allows a specific spinoff actor to return to the franchise after 18 years.

This new member of the Doctor Who season 14 cast also appeared...
