Found this movie through MUBI India channel. I'm really impressed of the hard-hitting commentary of gender roles in Indian society made by this movie. There is no preaching, no patronizing, but just pure cinema and story-telling. For a movie of early 90s, making such relevant commentary on various issues such as child marriage, patriarchy, gender relations, rape, poverty, without telling you what to think of it - that is cinema. Way ahead of its time! Wonderful casting and brilliant performances.

I am disappointed by the fact that no one reviewed this great movie till now.This movie is one of those movie in which every actor preformed brilliantly.I recommend everyone who loves to watch those art movies and also hates the masala movie to watch this finest movie.In this movie Rajeshwari Sachdev and Naseruddin shah gave optimum performance.this movie is satirical to the era where everything which male do was regarded as OK.In this movie rajeshwari sachdev got married to a boy while she was a child and as per the rule the girl is left to his father's house till she gets old enough to go to her husband.During this time she helps her father by working in factory as a cook for the labour and truck drivers who come to factory for delivering the required materials in factory . Among the truck driver there is om puri who loves rajeshwari and also expresses his love and wants to marry her.though rajeshwari love him discard the marry proposal as she was married in childhood.Rajeswari husband is said to be in mumbai but she hasn't got any letter or information about where he is and what he is doing except the information by her father-in-law who used to visit to take her to her husband house.Naseruddin now widow lives lonely life and because of this rajeshwari hesitates to go her husband house.Later one day naseruddin comes to rajeswari and tells her that her husband is coming back from mumbai and he wants to see his wife in his house.So rajeswari goes to her husband house but after many days when she doesnot get any info about when her husband will come,gets suspicious about her father-in-laws intention. One day father -in-law being drunk tires to rape rajeshwari but she escapes.later next day her father-in-law asks for forgiveness and to get out of the sin which he tied earlier goes to temple everyday and also to the different events which happen everyday in tample.Rajeshwari seeing her father -in-law change get impressed and begin to treat him like father. One day naseruddin intoxicate her and rapes her.so what happens to rajeshwar and will naseruddin get punish for his did? is reveled in end.
