The funniest part of this trainwreck is not just Rivera finding nothing but dirt in Al Capone's vault, which wasn't even a vault most likely, but when he found nothing but a bottle, and then claimed "It's probably illegal bathtub gin," training, till the last minute, to act as if he really found something.... What a dolt.
That self-aggrandizing bignosed loudmouth got the best comeuppance ever - before an audience of purported millions, as in Super Bowl 42 (2008). Barnum must've been wrinkling his wings ROFLOL at that less than impressive reveal. His "career," such as it was, dragged out with his own yawner of a talk show before it tanked under the weight of (easily) better quality productions. In fact, like the similar braying T. Moran, D. A. Brums & V. Politano, I'd happily forgotten about that blow soft until recently, when to my horror I discovered all of these cretins were resurrected - & Rivera's creaky carcass was shoved in front of the cameras for the wince-inducing Murder in the Family, where he shouted like a deaf man at "what few of them are left" watching that junk. This reinvented raving republican - his real name is "Gerald!" - will hopefully hence be confined to that fringe "news" outfit f-o-x, which is exactly where he belongs, & not unearthing anymore vaults - until, that is, he's the star un-attraction of his own.
This show was the embarrassment of Geraldo's career back in the day. But looking back at it today, the documentary side of the show is excellent. Geraldo's visited many places/buildings that is long gone, and were able to interview many people who lived in the Capone era, who were still alive in 1986. Its a good watch if you want to hear about the old mobsters back in 1920 Chicago, told by people that lived the era, even if the vault findings is a let down.

- TriviaThe show aired live in the USA in April 1986 garnering one of the highest ratings in US television history. Nielsen recorded a 34 average rating and 48 average share in eight markets, and a 57 rating and 73 share in the Chicago market. Rivera hosted the show which was to climax with the opening of a "secret vault" inside the bowels of the Lexington Hotel in Chicago, supposedly revealing Al Capone's treasure or possibly human remains. Internal Revenue Service Agents and a medical examiner stood at the ready should any cash or corpse lay inside. When demolition crews finally made their way inside the only contents were a dirt pile and a bottle of bathtub gin. The hype generated a record rating of 57 with an estimated audience of 30,000,000. The term "Al Capone's Vault" has come to mean any over-hyped event that leads to nothing.
