'Sun,' 'Father' attend Karlovy 40th birthday
MOSCOW -- Central and Eastern Europe's leading international film festival at Karlovy Vary opens Friday, marking its 40th edition with the logo Life Begins at 40. The festival, which runs for 10 days in the Bohemian spa town southwest of Czech capital Prague, will celebrate its anniversary edition with a rich lineup of 14 international competition films that touch upon some of the world's most contemporary and timeless subjects. The competition field includes such gritty social dramas as Slovak director Martin Sulik's The City of the Sun (Slunecni stat), the story of four friends layed off from a bleak factory as the chill winds of neo-capitalism blow through their post-Communist country, and Danish director Henrik Ruben Genz's Chinaman (Kinamand), about a 45-year-old man who marries the younger sister of a Chinese restaurateur to save her from deportation.
