Gerard Butler has had a varied career so far, with him playing everything from action leads to rom-com love interests to a singing Phantom of the Opera for Joel Schumacher. But, it has to be said that his most consistently entertaining output falls squarely into the action genre, and as far as Gerard Butler movies go, the action films will always be our favorites… so don’t expect to see The Ugly Truth on this list, but the Jennifer Aniston adventure The Bounty Hunter might scrape by. Or maybe not. Let’s see how it goes:
300 (2006)
Perhaps The film that put Gerard Butler on the map for most people, particularly the action and comic book crowds. Butler is in peak physical form here, showing off his bod as the ultimate Spartan warrior and proving that he is indeed quite the leading man. His performance here is commanding, a bit in...

Scottish actor and producer Gerard Butler has been the star of countless projects within a variety of genres. From his role as a protective father in the action film Greenland all the way to the haunted singer in the movie adaptation of Phantom of the Opera, there is no role that Butler can't handle. In addition to his previous work, his upcoming role of Stoick the Vast in the highly anticipated How to Train Your Dragon live-action film is sure to keep him on audiences' minds throughout 2025 and beyond. Although Butler's filmography is expansive, to say the least, there is one project that audiences of both film and literature should be sure not to miss.

The best Viking movies transport audiences to the world of the 9th to 11th centuries for bloodlustful battle-filled adventures with some of the most notorious warriors in history. These movies tell the story of Vikings, those polytheistic Norse warriors who sailed the seas, pillaging and conquering. In the world of streaming services, the tales of Viking warriors have become much more popular. With TV shows like Vikings and Last Kingdom, there is a clear lack of Viking movies compared to other subgenres of historical drama.
Viking stories go back thousands of years, with the brave and violent warriors blazing a trail through history, creating an exciting backdrop for any movie or TV show. Thanks possibly to the success of shows like Vikings and its spinoff, Vikings: Valhalla, this unique time and place in history became popular again though the best Viking movies show that there's always been an interest in the longboat-sailing warriors.

Gerard Butler is the Picasso of trash cinema. Across a career spanning three decades, he's starred in exemplar schlockfests like "Dracula 2000" (the movie where we learn that Dracula and Judas Iscariot (!) are one and the same) and "Lara Croft: Tomb Raider -- The Cradle of Life" (a film where Angelina Jolie punches a shark in the nose before hitching a ride on its dorsal fin), along with "Law Abiding Citizen," "Den of Thieves," "Plane," the "Fallen" movies, and many more like them. When he isn't playing diabolical baddies or rugged mavericks, he can often be found portraying bellow-y bearded bruisers, be they Beowulf in 2005's "Beowulf & Grendel" or, most famously, King Leonidas in "300."

Zack Snyder's 2006 film "300," based on the comic book by Frank Miller, tells a hyper-stylized and not-the-least-bit-historically-accurate version of the Battle of Thermopylae (480 BC) wherein 300 Spartan soldiers managed to fend off anywhere from 120,000 to 300,000 soldiers of the Persian Empire for three full days. Both Miller's book and Snyder's film present the Spartans as teeth-gashing, testosterone-spitting, Spam-scented beefcake slabs comprised of nothing but pectoral muscles, testicles, and homophobia. They speak in "Join the Marines" recruiting slogans and disparage anything that's not at least 4000% more masculine than a two-ton bag of Tom Jones' chest hair.
Speaking of chest hair, none of the Spartans have any, happy to parade around their cartoonishly cut physiques as if they all possess a severe shirt allergy. Leading the charge is King Leonidas (Gerard Butler), a man who cannot help but add multiple exclamation marks after every sentence he speaks.

Toronto film fest picks local fare
TORONTO -- Rolling out the lineup of Canadian films for the 30th edition of the Toronto International Film Festival, organizers Tuesday announced world premieres for Thom Fitzgerald's 3 Needles and Beowulf & Grendel, the latest work from Sturla Gunnarsson. Also, short-filmmaker Louise Archambault's feature film debut, Familia, will open the second edition of Canada First, a showcase for emerging Canadian directors. 3 Needles stars Chloe Sevigny, Sandra Oh, Olympia Dukakis, Stockard Channing and Lucy Liu in a drama about AIDS that spans three continents. Beowulf & Grendel, a drama about a Norse hero's battle with a murderous monster loosely based on the ninth century Anglo-Saxon epic poem, is set for the festival's Special Presentations sidebar.
