The Battle of the Nile was a major naval battle fought between the British Royal Navy under the command of Rear-Admiral Sir Horatio Nelson, and the Navy of the French Republic under orders from Napoleon and under the direct command of Commander Vice-Admiral François-Paul Brueys d'Aigalliers. Brueys believed he had established a significant formidable defensive position at Aboukir Bay on the Mediterranean coast off Egypt from August 1-3, 1798.
