The plot of the Sajan (1969) romance between Manoj Kumar and Asha Parekh's characters shown in the first half of this film was originally used in the British musical comedy "Happy Go Lovely" (1951). The Hindi films "Jhoota Kahin Ka" (1979), "Pasand Apni Apni" (1983), and "Ghajini" (2008), and the Malayalam film "Aram + Aram = Kinnaram" (1985) also used similar plotlines. Shatrughan Sinha stated ' I started from zero to become a hero. Saajan was my first film. I was practically a junior artiste in the film. I appreciate Mohan Segal's gesture of giving me a police man's role. I was standing out of the frame most of the time. I shared my make up room with a junior artiste who would throw me out to take a nap daily. Asha Parekh and I had some tiffs. We still do not talk to each other. I also wonder why Manoj Kumar who was earning in lakhs and lakhs was making the producer's buy his cigarettes's every day".
