The original plan was to have Sting turn heel and be the third man in the NWO and have Hulk Hogan turn heel and join them at a later time and originally Randy Savage was going to be injured and taken away earlier in the match and have Sting turn on Lex Luger later in the match and start the NWO. Hulk Hogan actually wasn't ready to turn heel yet but when he learned about this storyline he asked Eric Bischoff if he'd be the third man instead of Sting because Sting didn't have the WWF in him and Bischoff let Hogan have his way.
Ric Flair won the U.S. Heavyweight title for the first time in years at this event.
Kevin Nash, Scott Hall and a "mystery partner" (ultimately revealed to be Hulk Hogan) fought Randy Savage, Sting and Lex Luger to a no contest. Following the end of the match, Hogan announced that he, Hall, and Nash had founded the New World Order, an event that led WCW and its flagship show, Monday Nitro, to an impressive streak of ratings victories over the rival WWF.
