I don't know what he did, I don't fully comprehend how he achieved those creative images but I liked it. Video artist Peter Campus made in "Three Transitions" a seminal video experiment presenting apparently innocent images but rich in metaphorical and philosophical content, a magic of amazing results constructed thanks to incredible video techniques available at the time.
First experiment (my favorite) involves the artist cutting himself to later go inside into his own figure, almost as if he were made out of paper. What he reveals with that? The human search for its sense of self discovery, trying to find a meaning or something worthy. He closes the segment by going through himself and gluing his shattered self back together, now with some scars, different from the previous first image before the cutting (the experience changes you). The second seems to talk about the vanity in societies, people trying to create an impressive exterior image which tries to disguise the interior image. But as shown here, it's useless to fake such image, it'll appear someway, somehow. Campus is putting makeup on his face but instead of getting cleaner and hide the flaws on his face he ends up revealing another face behind. The more he applies the product, the more it shows a more confused expression underneath his own. Third one is the mysterious of all with him burning a mirror that goes in flames like a piece of paper and he's reflected on that same mirror. Of course, this was just my brief thoughts on what I've seen, anyone can come up with infinite possibilities, that's what make this video fun and provoking to watch.
Reality, illusion, juxtaposed and superimposed images, all courtesy of a great editing work and a lot of talent from this clever and gifted artist. It may look date since now we have computers which can generate better and more exciting images than the ones created here but this experience was truly unique and fascinating. I strongly suggest "Three Transitions", indeed a notable work of art. 10/10
