      Soft Movie

Palkon Ki Chhaon Mein is a very soft romantic movie which has Super Star Rajesh Khanna playing a soft romantic role of Postman in a village. The movie has some wonderful moments and has fabulous acting by Rajesh Khanna. The music by Laxmikant Pyarelal is soft and has a no of melodious songs and the main song is still very popular. Jeetendra puts in a small role and Amzad Khan is there too. The story set in a village has a good narrative. One feels one is seeing a Gulzar movie. A must see for people who love soft movies and like the acting of the Super Star Rajesh Khanna. Hema Malini puts in a strong performance also and one feels sad for her character. The village characters are strong too.

      Terrible film, zero continuity

If you want to see Rajesh Khanna's hair change from his older short style to his newer "sufi" style and back every five minutes, see this movie. At one time he gives a letter to Hema Malini and has short hair and is cleanshaven. In the next scene he has crossed the street to give a letter to Farida Jalal and here he has long hair and a two week beard. Just an awful movie. Couldn't bear to watch more than half an hour. I want to know what the other reviewers here were smoking when they saw this movie. The kindest thing I can say is that perhaps the director (Meraj) signed Rajesh Khanna by mistake, and lacked the budget to work through the superstar's eccentricities.

A class movie of First Indian Superstar

This film was made during action, violence and cheap Mahala films' age, but it was the guts of Rajesh Khanna who performed in such a nice film during totally negative environment. The character of a honest postman was portrayed by him superbly and the song Dakia Dak Laya can only match with him in Indian cine world. A real all time family household film, which can be watched with daughter to grand-mother without any hesitation. In my opinion today's generation of stars never think over to perform in such type of sober films, which has no cheap duologue, song or item dance etc. No such type of film is found in the career of the so called Big B (?), or SRK or Hrithik etc. Actually no director can even imagine them to perform in such type of sober characters.

Light romantic movie in a village setting

I just learned from other reviewers that the director Meraj was a Gulzar assistant and it shows. This is just like a Gulzar movie and it's lovely. The story is about unemployed graduate Ravi played by Rajesh Khanna who unexpectedly gets the job of a postman in a village. He's a charming lad with an affable personality and quick-witted and thus takes no time to endear himself to the villagers where he feels quite at home. He falls for the village girl Mohini played by Hema Malini when he mistakes her eagerness to befriend the new village postman as her abiding interest in him personally. But she has a little secret. The rest of the story deals with the secret and how it changes everyone's lives. A simply charming romantic movie. The film slipped a bit in the first few village scenes when an unnecessary melodrama was attempted with little stories of other villagers like the insane old woman pining for her dead son and the cheerful army widow but those stories werent done very well and didnt elicit the expected emotions. The story really picks up in the second half and the light hearted movie leaves one wanting more at the end. Actually apart from the aforementioned forced sort of scenes that were also out of place because particularly those scenes looked contrived so much so that even the village looked like a set in those few scenes and not like a real indian village. The music is ok not spectacular like one expects from a Gulzar movie, esp the song "Allah Megh de" is just awful. Rest of the songs are ok and "Dakiya daak laya" is good and situational. Rajesh Khanna is at his best and so is Hema Malini. Everyone knows about Kaka's skills but i dont know why Hema Malini is so underrated as an actress. i guess its true what they say...people do undermine beautiful people after all even if they're talented..they just deride it.

      Poignant film

Ravi (Rajesh Khanna) accidentally lands a job as postman in a remote village after being an unemployed college graduate for some Time. He meets a variety of people as he fits into rural life, including Mohini (Hema Malini). He mistakes her affection for something more, and falls in love, while she is still waiting for a somewhat philandering Army officer (Jeetendra) with whom she has had a fling with when his battalion is training near her village.

Ravi withdraws into himself when he finds out about her fling, and tries to help her locate her love when war breaks out. He brings her news of her lover's death, and there are misunderstandings which cause anguish ... eventually leading to a compromise and a happy ending.

A few lilting melodies from Rahul Dev Burman compliment this film ... Allah megh de, Dakhiya Dakh Laya, and Koi mere mathe pe bindiya ....
