Double Dragon 3: The Rosetta Stone!

The Double Dragon series is one of the most unique fighting video games! The characters, the action, and the sure thrill of excitement makes this game a fun non-stop playing time! Below is a brief look how I think the game is!

Game Play: The game play is very good. There is really basic controls here and is easy to perform. Novice gamers should have a good time here!

Graphics: The graphics are wonderful especially for the regular Nintendo System! The backgrounds are really beautiful!

Difficulty: The game is easy but as it goes on you find out that it will become more difficult!

Music: The music is great! Just fantastic catchy tunes through out the game! In My opinion its some of the best music ever in a video game!

Sound: The sound is great. Nuff said!

Overall: I have always loved Double Dragon 3: The Rosetta Stone! If you like excellent fighting adventure games then I strongly recommend you play this game!

    Best one of the series!

I don't get why a lot of people didn't like this followup. Granted; they deviated a little from the org story and graphics. But I think it was for the best; as those aspects were actually improved. More importantly, gameplay itself. It has more complex levels, so it's longer and more meaningful. It's also slightly more difficult; which I think it further adds to it's enjoyment. So to make it clear; it does have way better graphics. And I'm assuming then that fans didn't like, the more realistic look; go figure. Always on the upside; there are more playable chars, with their own style and weapons; that are also more interesting and add to the already deep storyline. Even the "soundtrack" was much better that ever before. This is my favorite NES scrolling fighting game. I have played the previous two; and I thought that they were merely OK. The order in which they appeared certainly matches it's rating. Ie, the first being the worst; and this being the best. They surely pale in comparison to this one anyhow. So do yourself a favor; ignore the detractors; and play it with an open mind. I'm sure you'll find it surprisingly good too ;)

    What the...???

As a huge fan of the original arcade game I was astounded at how awful (and weird) this threequel is. The gameplay is non-existent. For a side-scrolling beat-'em-up this fails to be engaging on every level (pun intended). There is NO skill involved in any of it. Most punches and kicks fail to connect, none of the enemies differentiate from each other and it's too slow and sluggish. In fact it's a lot like the terrible Double Dragon game on the Commodore 64. A game so bad it's been the butt of many thousands of jokes since I first got it fourteen years ago!

I just don't understand what's going on in this game. Who is the creepy little E.T. guy? Why do big hands and cubes of non-moving/threatening concrete (!) come out the ground to kill you? What's the deal with the headless ninja corpses that turn into tree trunks when you kill them? I kid you not, this game is one of the most baffling artifacts in the whole universe. Forget the Turin Shroud or Stonehenge.

If you like the genre play the Streets of Rage games and forget this travesty. It's amazing games this bad are made.

"Double Dragon III": when speed is not salvation

The "Double Dragon" series had already become a landmark by the early 90s, paving the way for the beat 'em up genre. The third issue, titled "The Sacred Stones", appeared in 1991, promising everything that players who loved the Lee brothers had already seen: fights, bosses and the atmosphere of street confrontation. But, as before, this third run is a controversial adventure that I didn't particularly enjoy.

This time, the brothers Billy and Jimmy Lee embark on a global journey. Their goal is to find three sacred stones that, according to legend, can grant unprecedented power or something like that. Different countries are waiting for the heroes: USA, China, Japan, Egypt, Italy. On a large scale? Undoubtedly. However... ...In "Double Dragon III", the developers relied on speed. The gameplay has really become faster: the characters move with much more enthusiasm, and the blows are delivered with lightning speed. At first, it's impressive when you compare the game with its predecessors. However, soon you begin to notice the monotony. The enemies seem to be cloned: several standard models with different colors of clothing. Their behavior is equally predictable, and the bosses are... Well, in fact, these are the same enemies, only with a slightly increased health reserve.

Unfortunately, the gameplay is also not very diverse. All that is required of the player is to continuously press the buttons, combining punches. It seems that new techniques have been added, but all this does not catch on.

On a graphical level, "Double Dragon III" corresponds to its time: nothing outstanding, but not outright bad either. The sprites of the characters are detailed, the backgrounds of the locations are diverse - from streets to ancient temples. However, what looks beautiful at first glance soon loses its charm. It's all about repetition: the levels feel the same, and the bosses are not remembered either visually or in terms of gameplay.

«Double Dragon III: The Sacred Stones" is an attempt to develop a formula known for the series, which, unfortunately, remained only at the level of an attempt. The increased speed and global scale of the game do not save it from monotony and lack of emotional involvement. It's not a bad game, but it's also not one that you'll remember for a long time. It's worth playing for the sake of curiosity, but no more.

    6 out of 10.

    A rare case.

Double Dragon 3: The Rosetta Stones was the third part of the classic beat'em up saga. DD 3 Originally was an arcade recreational machine, and it was pretty forgettable unlike its two predecessors. The game featured (once again) the Lee brothers in a venture across the globe fighting alongside other martial artists, these characters were available if you 'purchased' their help in a special shop located at certain areas of the maps. This time the developers didn't came up with better, faster moves instead the enemies doubled the speed the player could get hitting the buttons. All this turned DD3 into a really hard game only for die-hard fans and extremely fast players. The Domestic version (the NES version) was a completely different thing. Maybe it was the lack of features the arcade version had what made the game more user-friendly. Yet still was easily the most difficult of the three versions it was possible to beat it. Usually the domestic versions are far too inferior compared with the original game; in this rare case the conversion exceeds the original. Rating for the Arcade version: 6, 5 Rating for the NES Version: 8, 5

    • Trivia
This game, released for the Nintendo Entertainment System, was not a port of "Double Dragon 3: The Rosetta Stone", but rather a parallel project that was developed by a different company simultaneously with the arcade release. While the general premise of the two versions are similar, the graphics, gameplay system, levels, characters, overall plot, and ending in the NES version are very different compared to the arcade version.

There is a spelling error in the opening text in which Billy Lee is referred to as Bimmy: "A year has passed since Bimmy and Jimmy defeated the Shadow Warriors."
