Surprisingly good TV movie (review might contain spoiler-like elements)

Let's face it, this movie *is* a cheap shining-rip off, but somehow it felt pleased watching it. As someone stated earlier on this board, this is a family-friendly movie, no bad language etc, which makes it even more suitable for TV use. This typical American TV movie format is boring and it certainly makes it challenging for the filmmakers to do something even remotely original. I find it hard to put into words, but there was something quite fresh and genuine in this, I dunno if this is a training work by someone in film school, but I must say that the basics of story telling were all right. The film doesn't pretend to be more than it is, the lousy cgi and a few mistakes (i think I saw the shadow of a camera in a stairway sequence) feels OK in this type of movies where filmmakers usually misuse their talents a lot more with tons of low budget action sequences.

The soundscapes were sometimes a bit overdone, the sick whispering didn't leave the "walking in alone in the dark"-sequences alone for a second, with a bit more patience, silence mixed with normal sounds that one could expect to hear on a shipwreck could have been even original. I watched the movie from a Scandinavian r2 DVD edition that featured stereo ac3/dolby digital sound. Unfortunately I had to use headphones, I can't say anything about the usage of Dolby Surround.

The actors were used well, not the best ones around, but by limiting their communication to TV-series type dialog you had the characters in their right elements and on the very edge of what you can expect from them.

Overly predictable, cheap, cliché...

This movie is so bad it almost becomes funny again.. I can't believe how many moderately positive comments this movie is receiving here. If you call yourself a movie fan, how can you keep a straight face when watching this, let alone be amused. Every cliché of 'scary, mysterious movies' is used here.

Pretty much everything has already been said in other comments, the Shining rip-off, the lousy acting, the predictability, the (pathetic excuses for) special effects.. I won't repeat everything again. This movie is laughably bad, in every possible way, please take this warning and don't waste your time!

Most triangles have three points, but "The Triangle" doesn't even have one.

Just what the world needs, another lame cable movie about the Bermuda Triangle. In this one, three friends - Luke Dylan-from-"Beverly Hills 90210" Perry, Dan Perry-from-"Veronica's Closet" Cortese and David another-guy-from...er...well... Hewlett - go on their annual fishing trip, this year to the fictional island of San Sebastian on the cusp of the Bermuda Triangle. They, Perry's girlfriend, the captain of the rustbucket they're forced to rent for the excursion, and said cap's first mate (Olivia Karen-from-"The Wonder Years" D'Abo) soon find themselves Sailing Into Danger; oh yes, did I also mention that Cortese has been having some strange dreams about himself and someone who looks remarkably like D'Abo aboard a ship that vanished mysteriously inside the Triangle more than 60 years ago?

Not only is it all about as frightening as an episode of "The Groovie Ghoulies," but it's incredibly badly written - you get the impression that writer Ted Humphrey made it all up as he (and Bing Lowenstein, who shares story credit) went along with no regard for sense or logic, even on the movie's own terms (at one point Cortese and Hewlett take a picture of a voodoo ceremony with the participants failing to come out in the picture - you expect the ceremony to have some kind of bearing on the plot, but it never does). Director Lewis Teague and his cast try hard to hide how imbecilic and dull this all is, but they fail; it gets less watchable as it progresses, and there's something wrong with any thriller where the scariest bit is Luke Perry getting a slight cut on the arm. Plus, the special effects aren't exactly of "Titanic" standards - in fact, they aren't even of "Stingray" standards.

The most interesting thing about the movie for me was the location shooting in Barbados, because I lived there for many years - and while I did get a kick out of recognising various locations, the film's no advertisement for the country (which, by the way, is nowhere near Bermuda). The people and institutions (including "Film Barbados") are thanked in the end credits - but I suspect anyone living there who's seen this will not be too grateful. Making "The Haunting" (Jan DeBont version) look like "The Haunting" (good version), and with a totally ridiculous climax and finale, "The Triangle" does bring up one question - why does Jamaica get all the good ones?

(Other projects using Barbados as a location - the horrid Michael Caine/Roger Moore comedy "Bullseye!", "The Love Boat: A Valentine Voyage," "The Bold and the Beautiful," and according to the location links two "Boob Cruise" videos - hopefully without the knowledge of the locals, given that the island officially frowns on stuff like that. See what I mean about Jamaica?... Although Danni Ashe would certainly have livened "The Triangle" up.)

so bad it's kind of funny

Basically this is the Shining on a boat with a predictable plot. It does have a couple of startling moments but mostly it is pretty lame. I cannot say any of the actors really distinguished themselves.

Overall, it was an amusing waste of a couple of hours.

Sunk with All Hands

Any movie that involves science fiction or any kind of mysticism must have complete accuracy in the parts of the film that use actual history as support of the plot. This film immediately ran into trouble when they referred to the lost British ocean liner as "HMS" Queen of Scots. Any screenwriter capable of selling a script to a major network such as TBS should know that "HMS" refers to British warships. The liner should have been "RMS" for Royal Mail Steamship. Also, they referred to the ship being lost before WWII in "October" of 1939. Hello! WWII began on September 1st, 1939! Aside from those terrible errors the film was a complete bomb. The acting was almost shockingly bad. Luke Perry looked aged and bored. Dan Cortese should have stayed at MTV. The final scene with the liner catching fire and sinking in about 30 seconds was perhaps the worst special effect I've ever seen on TV. 80,000 tons of metal just sinking in 30 seconds. Sure. I still can hardly believe how awful this film was. Man the lifeboats on this one!

A made-for-Superstation movie. 'Nuff said.

This is one of the worst films I've ever seen. Think "The Shining" but on a hulk of an abandoned ocean liner encountered by 5 or 6 hapless idiots "fishing" in the Bermuda Triangle. Witness Luke Perry put on his "evil" face! Witness Olivia d'Abo lose all credibility! Witness "Deep Rising" being plagiarized! (never thought I'd see that). Also witness that hilarious ending, abrupt and out-of-place.

A Scathing Critique

This movie was bad. How could the characters be so stupid? How could the writers and director think the audience could be so stupid? I was never scared, never felt freaked-out, never felt any suspense. All I felt was - "that is stupid". Even some of the special effects were a bit rough. 3 out of 10 from me.

Scared the Ship out of me!

Haha, I just wanted to write that tagline. But now that I've started...

It really did, this movie scared me, but really any thriller/horror would. For a TV movie this was very well done, good suspense, great shots of the boat, and everything looked "real," as they didn't resort to many cheesy effects. I mainly watched this for Luke Perry as I am on a binge to watch everything he's been in, and although I am more into his cool Dylan character, he played the happy friendly Stu pretty well, too.

Also, the way this movie was shot, it was interesting that it wasn't focused on one main character. Most movies stay on one person or two main characters usually. In this movie, everyone turned into a principle for their scenes, it was interesting.

It is definitely a fun ride if you are into don't-take -it-too-seriously TV horrors. I recommend.

great movie

This was one of the best movies I've ever seen. I thought that they should have made more out of the ghost idea, though. They also should have added on to the dreams and I thought that they shouldn't have killed the people so close together. This movie could have been a lot longer and they could have had more fun with it, seeing they were on a big boat, there could have been a lot of surprises, but for what was on this movie it was good enough to watch again.

Geometry was Better!

I kidded my wife it was about geometry when I rented it. It would have been far more interesting and less predictable if it was about geometry. Whoever designed the sets had no clue what it looks like on a ship... typical Hollywood. This movie is only a little more exciting than a coma. Avoid it, there are far better videos to rent.

Better than some TV movies

Wow, Dan Cortese can act! Who knew? I usually change the channel when I see a made-for-TV movie, but this one really caught my eye.

Maybe it had to do with the fact that I've always found the whole Bermuda Triangle mystery very interesting. I also found Luke Perry's character (the guy who's always in it for the bounty) pretty good. This movie reminded me of the "Poseidon Adventure". Old ships and Sea ghosts always freak me out.

Now where did I park my 800ft ship?

"The Triangle" puts its two hunky male lead actors (Luke Perry & Dan Cortese) proudly on the film poster, rather than the sexy female lead actresses (Olivia D'Abo & Polly Shannon). Nope, it's not a David DeCoteau film, but both men were popular TV-actors back then, and thus it's an understandable choice. The film itself is a watchable supernatural thriller, but obviously nothing phenomenal. It's an attempt to blatantly copy the plot and the atmosphere of "The Shining" and transfer the setting from an isolated mountain hotel resort to the ominous Bermuda Triangle. Of course, Luke Perry is no match for Jack Nicholson, and director Lewis Teague isn't exactly Stanley Kubrick, neither (although he did direct a handful of cool 80s horror movies like "Alligator" and "Cujo"). It's amusing to spot the clichés in the script, and everyone takes his/her role far too serious, but - admittedly - a few scenes aboard the abandoned and ominously floating 800ft ghost ship "The Queen of Scots" are mildly uncanny.

More of a Let Down

I've seen the movie,it was OK. Not the best ever. I was kind of little when Ifirst saw it, and it scared me, and gave me nightmares. I re-watched it not too long ago, it's not scary at all. It's interesting but not scary. Yeah, so the people go on a boat, in the Bermuda triangle! how stupid is that?! and then they find that freaky boat, and then they're even more stupid and get on it! They go through all types of word things, ghosts and ship blowing up, and all types of stuff. Whatever. Like I said, i was OK. definitely not best. Sheesh, Titanic was waaaaaaaaaaaaay better than that. Oh Well, i suppose some people thought it was excellent.

Pathetic!

I like the mysteries surrounding the phenomenon of the Bermuda Triangle, but this movie is a sorry, pathetic attempt, with no real insight into the unexplained occurrences associated with the Triangle.

The acting, story line and cinematics were laughable, and the only reason I sat through all of this movie, instead of switching to another channel, was that I had no clue to what was actually going to happen in this TV-movie, because the commercials didn't hint at anything. Otherwise I would not have wasted my time.

Nothing grand, but it have its moments

Since I have always been intrigued by the mystery shrouding the Bermude Triangle, I bought this movie. I chose to look away from the fact that Luke Perry was in it, as I can't see him beyond his role in Beverly Hills 90210.

The story was good and the set was good. Even the characters were well thought off, I just had a hard time taking Luke Perry seriously. But hey, that is just me. The movie was actually above my expectations and quite nice. Not a movie that you will pick up again later and say "I want to see this one again" though.

Good entertainment throughout the movie, sort of a low budget mix between "The Shining" and "Ghost Ship". The movie is not scary, but will keep you sufficiently entertained.

A poorly made film

A terrible film, should never have been released. It cannot even be called remotely entertaining. How can a film with such great actors be so bad? The plot was meandering and the entire suspense of the Bermuda triangle was never ever projected. Most of the content stood on very weak ideas, and very shaky foundations. The acting was loud and appalling, unbecoming of some of the finest actors in Hollywood. There was no story to weave the scenes together. Basic errors, such as naming the Atlantic the deepest ocean in the world, showed the lack of credible research. The story dragged on over a 6 hours, when more complex films have been finished in less. Everyone took the viewer for granted, no one is dazzled by special effects anymore.

Same plot line different day

The most interesting thing about this movie is the cruise liner special effects, you can tell it's a computer generated (CG) image, but it fits perfectly with the water and the little fishing boat our courageous heros are in.

The plot is tried and true, good people go someplace evil and let the evil there possess them. It's been done better.

The Bomb-uda Triangle

I know, I use to like Luke Perry, too. He was cuter than Jason Priestley ('90210') and a better actor. But this movie sucks anyway.

Luke and a group of his (idiot) friends get tangled up in Triangle events, none of which is very interesting. Too much personal drama congests the lame storyline. Except for Luke, some quality actors.... WERE NOT IN THIS FILM. That's too bad because Luke has just enough charisma to account for something, but 'something' never happens and this little soaker dries up fast.

For Luke Perry purists (of which I use to be one). Where have you been for the last few years, Luke? I know you didn't get lost in the Triangle, because I looked for you there already.

Really dumb and pointless

The beginning at least was interesting, but once out at sea the film took a turn for the worst, here's why:

ACTING: Horrible, save a few small parts (isn't that how it always is?)

DIRECTION: It's all crazy, and we wonder "what WAS the director trying to show?" But you learn you can't figure it out when the camera is swinging around half the time.

PLOT: The plot itself could have been made interesting, but what the end all result/theory was is just plain stupid. The last half hour is all so boring and predictable. And what about the cgi on the boat at the end?

FLAWS: Too many to mention. Nothing the character(s) did was realistic, and of course this is usually the case with these kind of thrillers/horrors. But THE TRIANGLE was so ridiculous and not fun that I can not put aside the flaws for the fun of the film's sake-because there is no fun involved in this mishap of a "film!"

If you like really dumb, unintelligent, stupid, boring, ridiculous film, by all means, the triangle is made for you! 1/5 stars-

JOHN ULMER.

Horrible, horrible, horrible

About what I expected, and less. I've been seeing commercials for this movie for about a month now, and the hype it received was undeserving. Luke Perry's character was lacking depth, and the the story was extremely predictable. Too bad though, because the Bermuda Triangle is such a fascinating phenomenon, and Olivia Dabo is a much better actress than this movie could offer.
