Living Single Cast: Where The Actors Are Now
Image
An integral part of the Black sitcom boom of the 1990s, "Living Single" remains a timeless series among the rest. There are so many qualities about the show that makes it great television: satisfying growth for characters (even the supporting ones), sharp comedic writing; thoughtful episodes addressing workplace racism, sexism, homosexuality, and mental health; the portrayal of chosen family as a legitimate network of support. "Living Single" is like "Sex and the City" if it had a sitcom, network TV format.

It inspired series within its era and beyond -- it was the partial inspiration for "Friends," and paved the way for another all-Black female sitcom in the 2000s, "Girlfriends." The lasting impact of the show makes it one of the best TV shows of the 1990s.

Above all, "Living Single" shines because of the lightning-in-a-bottle chemistry of the cast. Everyone was perfectly suited to the roles they played; each...

‘The Mole’ Trailer: Netflix Resurrects Reality Series Rooted in Sabotage
Image
Welcome to a new generation of deception.

Over two decades since Anderson Cooper first hosted ABC reality competition series “The Mole,” the show is back on Netflix with 12 new contestants vying for a massive cash prize. Yet one of them is not who they appear to be…

Each week, 12 players work together in challenges to add money to a pot that only one of them will win. But there’s a catch — one player will sabotage the rest. Who is The Mole? The series kicks off October 7, with new episodes airing weekly.

Per an official synopsis, “The Mole” is a high-stakes competition series, and in this reimagined version, 12 players work together in challenges to add money to a pot that only one of them will win at the end. Among the players is one person who has secretly been designated “the Mole” and tasked with sabotaging the group’s money-making efforts.

Netflix May Abandon The Binge Model – Here's Why That's A Good Thing
Image
Netflix, the company that pioneered the streaming industry with the advent of binge-driven series drops throughout the 2010s, may or may not be in the process of stepping back from the model that made them famous. An industry insider newsletter from Puck News (via ScreenRant) published this week includes former THR editor Matthew Belloni's take on the streamer's current trajectory, along with insights from analyst Michael Nathanson. The report points to recent and upcoming Netflix originals that have debuted via split seasons and batch episode drops, concluding that, "for the most part, [CEO Reed] Hastings has seemed unwilling to pivot off the binge model because he hasn't needed or wanted to. Now, it appears, he does."

While there's been no official announcement from Netflix and this change is far from set in stone, I think a shift from the binge model would be a resoundingly good choice for the streamer -- and,...

Jennifer Coolidge Is Selling a Fake Luxury Home in Promo for Netflix’s Series ‘The Watcher’ (Video)
Image
Jennifer Coolidge is a woman of many talents, including, apparently, selling homes. Netflix introduced us to her latest character, real estate agent Karen Calhoun, in a clip Friday promoting Ryan Murphy’s new series, “The Watcher.”

In the video, Coolidge shows off 657 Boulevard, the infamous New York house from the new limited series. “The Watcher” is based on a story written for New York Magazine and follows a family who were ultimately threatened to leave their newly bought mansion after a mysterious stalker began sending them letters in the mail.

Coolidge gives a tour of the property in painstaking detail, as any luxury real estate agent would, highlighting the best features in the house — including the fifth bathroom, which was thrown in “just for fun.”

“There is nothing like this in the world,” she says as she twirls through one of the rooms. And of course, she had to show off the fully intact dumbwaiter,...

Alex Wagner Set to Lead Netflix’s ‘The Mole’ Reboot
Image
MSNBC’s Alex Wagner continues to pick up some of the most interesting jobs held by news anchors. First she took over the MSNBC time slot previously held by Rachel Maddow. Now she’s set to lead a reality show that was once the province of a young Anderson Cooper.

When Netflix launches a reboot of “The Mole,” the reality competition that was first broadcast in the U.S. by ABC in 2001, the program will be led by Wagner, according to a person familiar with the matter. Representatives for Netflix and MSNBC were not able to respond immediately to queries about the matter on Wednesday. Wagner’s role in the show was previously reported by Reality Blurred.

Cooper hosted the first season of the U.S. version of “The Mole” while he was still toiling for ABC News and before he moved to CNN. In the show, contestants are given...

Netflix launching tiered program early to compete with Disney
Image
Netflix is launching their new tier program much earlier than anticipated. The streaming service will begin offering the tiers in November, as opposed to early next year as originally announced. This has been seen as a maneuver to beat Disney+ to the punch. Disney+ launches their tiered program in December.

Netflix was originally planning on making their updated tiers available at the start of 2023. However, their tiered program will now officially launch on November 1.

Official details of the tiers are not entirely solidified, but at least one will be supported by ads. According to Variety, a Netflix representative said, “We are still in the early days of deciding how to launch a lower-priced, ad-supported tier and no decisions have been made.”

Originally, Netflix stated, in part: “We’re updating our prices so that we can continue to offer more variety of TV shows and films…As always we offer a...

‘The Mole’ Competition Show Re-emerges at Netflix
Image
Click here to read the full article.

Netflix is reviving a cult favorite from the early days of the reality TV boom.

The streamer has ordered a new version of The Mole, a competition series in which one player — the “mole” — works to undermine the others. The series, based on a Belgian format, aired for five seasons on ABC, with the last coming in 2008.

Eureka Productions (Holey Moley, Name That Tune) is behind the new version, which is slated to debut on Netflix in the fall. In the show, 12 contestants work together on a series of challenges that, if completed successfully, add money to a prize pot that only one of them will win. The mole, meanwhile, tries to sabotage the other players’ efforts while maintaining their cover as a regular player.

The Netflix show was filmed last year in Australia, per reports at the time from Reality Blurred and Buzzer Blog.

Film Review: Yakuza: Like A Dragon (2007) by Takashi Miike
With the number of adaptations Miike has dealt with in his filmography, it would be a surprise if he did not deal with a video game one. “Yakuza”, a 2005 Playstation 2 game provided a great opportunity considering its theme and aesthetics, and Miike did the most of it, coming up with one of the best video game adaptations I have ever seen on screen, even managing to tame his own absurdness, to a degree at least.

The story unfolds during a single, very hot night in Kamurocho (the video game’s version of Kabukicho) and revolves around five different axes that eventually collide. Imanichi and Nakanishi try to rob a bank but their ways are more of a comedy duo than of robbers and thus they end up taking the clerks and the customers of the bank as hostages despite their initial plan. In a building next door,...

Buenos Aires City Relaunches Film Commission (Exclusive)
Buenos Aires — Under municipal Minister of Culture Enrique Avogadro, the City of Buenos Aires is relaunching its Film Commission, taking advantage, yes, of the peso-dollar exchange but, above all, of Argentina’s unquestioned talent base, which is already triumphing outside Argentina.

Two examples, both from the TV sector: in 2018, Argentina sold more top 20 scripted format exports- eight – thanks to the sales of Telefe shows by Viacom. Intl. Studios, than any other country in the world, according to a study unveiled by The Wit at Mip Cancun.

Also, led by “Monzón,” a Buena Vista Original Productions with Buenos Aires’ Pampa Films, Argentina won far more kudos at last month’s Produ Awards than any other territory in Latin America.

Buenos Aires’ Film Commission drive builds on recent shoots in the city led over 2018-19 by international reality shows such as “The Mole,” for Germany and a New Zealand/Australia version of “The Bachelorette.

The film cemented Steve McQueen as a newly-minted superstar of the big screen and featured one of the all-time great casts: James Garner, Richard Attenborough, Charles Bronson, James Coburn, David McCallum, Donald Pleasence, James Donald among them. United Artists originally intended the movie to be shot in Hollywood but director John Sturges argued that it would only be convincing if shot on location in Germany. "The Coolest Guy Movie Ever" visits those locations and presents how they look today. In some cases, the iconic locations have changed considerably while others remain instantly recognizable. The documentary was conceived, directed, photographed and edited by Christophe Espenan, a devoted fan of the film. Espenan and a team of dedicated assistants and enthusiasts of the movie painstakingly tracked down even the most minor locations.

Beatty Holding Onto His "Dick Tracy" ?
Because of a "pre-existing licensing deal" with Tribune Co. "Archie" Comics had to kill their comic book reboot of plainclothes officer, private detective "Dick Tracy", with actor Warren Beatty ("McCabe & Mrs. Miller") continuing to hold onto the character's rights, despite a 'use it' or 'lose it' clause in a long-standing agreement with Tribune to produce a "Dick Tracy" movie or TV series:

Why YouTube’s ‘Escape the Night’ Is a Binge-Worthy Answer to Summer TV Doldrums
If you find yourself impatiently waiting for fall TV to arrive, here is something to get you through the dog days of August: it's called Escape the Night, and it is reality TV escapism at its finest. Now, if the names Murder in Small Town X, Whodunnit or The Quest don't mean anything to you, then Escape the Night is probably not going to be your cup of tea. But if you totally figured out that Kathryn was the mole long before The Mole's first season finale aired, then this is right up your alley. The YouTube …...

‘Dunkirk’ Blu-ray Review
Stars: Fionn Whitehead, Tom Hardy, Mark Rylance, Tom Glynn-Carney, Cillian Murphy, Kenneth Branagh, Harry Styles, Aneurin Barnard | Written and Directed by Christopher Nolan

On paper, Christopher Nolan’s follow-up to Interstellar couldn’t be more different to the puzzle boxes which have defined his movies to date. Here’s a real historic event portrayed in well under two hours, with no room for sci-fi elements or high concept hooks. That it feels, in the end, very much like you’ve watched a Christopher Nolan film is surprising, for reasons both pleasing and not-so-pleasing.

We’re thrown into the nightmare of 1940, when more than 300,000 British Expeditionary Force troops were trapped on the titular beach, with the German hordes moving in. (In one of the film’s many authentic touches, we get to see the German propaganda leaflets promising the Allies’ imminent destruction.)

Three stories – and here’s where the narrative is Nolanised.

Ultimate Horror Poll: All the honorable mentions that didn't make the cut
Susan Backlinie and Bruce in Tiburón (1975)
In our ongoing recap of last week's Ultimate Horror Poll -- in which over 100 genre experts helped determine the 100 greatest horror movies of all time by voting for their personal "ten best" -- the time has come to take stock of every honorable mention and clarification given by the survey's participants that weren't included in the original piece. To be clear, voters weren't asked for honorable mentions specifically; but a handful felt strongly enough about their "bubbling under" choices to list them anyway (which proved extraordinarily useful in helping break ties on the Top 100). See below for a full listing, as well as explanations from Bloody-Disgusting founder/editor-in-chief Brad Miska and director Corin Hardy ("The Hallow") on why they voted the way they did. Honorable Mentions: Barbara Crampton (Actor, "Re-Animator") Dracula (1931) Jaws (1975) Nosferatu (1922) Poltergeist (1982) Vampyr (1932) Brad Miska (Founder/Editor-in-Chief, Bloody-Disgusting.com; Producer) -- See Full Explanations Below Beetlejuice (1988) Bill & Ted's...

The 11 actors who’ve played Superman
Rob Leane Mike Cecchini Oct 11, 2016

From Kirk Alyn and George Reeves to Henry Cavill and Christopher Reeve, meet the men who have brought Superman to the screen...

Although Batman has had the most big screen versions of his character (more on that here), Superman surely holds the record for most re-castings once you add his vast television history into the equation. From Smallville to television musicals via Man Of Steel and old-school cinematic serials, The Big Blue Boy Scout sure has got around over the years.

Of course, the iconic Christopher Reeve holds the record for most filmic appearances, and remains to many film fans The Superman. Henry Cavill is surely after both of those accolades, even if the former seems the more likely goal.

While we wait for Cavill’s Supes to receive a post-Metropolis-levelling ass-whupping from Affleck’s Batman, then, let’s have a look at the actors...

Grammys 2014: Macklemore Wins Big, Lorde Is Luscious, And Did Queen Latifah Ruin A Giant Pro-Gay Moment?
(from Macklemore‘s Instagram)

It’s hard to believe in the sanctity of the Grammys when it’s possible to have, like, 17 of them. (Ahoy, Beyonce.) Katharine Hepburn didn’t have 17 Oscars. Hell, we’re on the fence about giving Meryl a fourth. But if you stick around long enough and maintain a baseline level of radio palatability, you’re likely to pick up a trophy every couple of years. Sheryl Crow has nine, you know what I mean?

But even if you’re a major skeptic, you couldn’t have hated too many of the chosen winners from the 56th Annual Grammy Awards on Sunday night. I, for one, relished in Kathy Griffin‘s first win for Best Comedy Album. The woman is an unstoppable force of neurotic, popcult nerd flavor, and she remains as audacious now as she was when she outlasted Stephen Baldwin on Celebrity Mole: Hawaii.

Anderson Cooper renews CNN contract through 2016
Anderson Cooper
CNN’s chief silver fox is staying put, at least through the next presidential election.

EW can confirm that Anderson Cooper has renewed his CNN contract, inking a deal to stay with the cable news network through 2016′s presidential race. (The Hollywood Reporter first broke the news.)

The intrepid newsman came to CNN in 2001, after a stint at ABC News (and host of The Mole); he’s hosted his signature show, Anderson Cooper 360°, since 2003. From September 2011 through May of this year, Cooper also hosted a syndicated talk show called Anderson.

“Survivor” Recap: Biggest Mistake Ever? Yes.
At the moment, Survivor: Blood Vs. Water should be called Survivor: Non-Heroes Vs. Non-Villains. Every remaining competitor is playing a low-key game (with the exception of Caleb, whose last-minute blitz on Brad Culpepper during that Tadhana tribal council is still the season’s most shocking move), and so far no one is even planning on anything nefarious or insane (with the exception of Colton, who left the game preemptively on a magic carpet made out of an oversize pink polo shirt).

Sure, Tyson is shoring up some propaganda against Aras, using backhanded remarks to make him look like an unfit teammate in front of his fellow tribesman, but that’s not exactly psychological warfare. We’re at a point where teammates who twitch too suddenly or utter anything suspicious get sent packing, and that was certainly the case on Wednesday’s episode. I hope some loudmouths start commandeering this game soon,...

“Whodunnit?” Premiere: Is It “Clue” Or Just Clueless?
ABC’s new murder mystery reality series is fun, but ridiculous. Should we tune in again?

ABC’s summer mystery series Whodunnit? is a reality competition that combines two sacred things: 1) The nutty ensemble mania of Clue (complete with a histrionic cast of murderous contestants), and 2) the awesome “There’s a crook among us!” suspense of The Mole, my favorite Anderson Cooper-hosted show. Take that, 360.

The problem: Whodunnit? is heavy on contrivance and near-senseless gameplay. I’ll be watching the entire season anyway thanks to my love of The Mole and the way Lesley Ann Warren brandishes a candlestick against her milky bodice, but the show needs work.

Hypothetically, the show makes total sense: 13 strangers enter a mysterious mansion, one of them is secretly a murderer, and the rest of the contestants try solving a new crime every week as the killer lurks and works in their midst. The...

Whodunnit TV Review
ABC is hoping to take reality television to a new level with Whodunnit, but this doesn’t appear to be the bridge that’s going to churn out the next big thing.

On the other hand, I have to admit that I hope this can attract enough viewers to get the industry invested in future endeavors that look more like this, and a lot less like the next group of morons we can all laugh at. Remember The Mole? I loved that show.

Whodunnit is, just for the sake of easy comparisons, a televised game of How To Host A Murder Mystery with a group of strangers as the contestants. 13 people file into a luxurious mansion, apparently unsure what reality effort they’ve signed on for, and before they have time to get settled in, one of them lies dead on the floor. The rest of them have to figure out who…...

The 10 Best Candidates to Take Over "Jeopardy!" From Alex Trebek
I got the memo about Alex Trebek potentially leaving Jeopardy! in 2016, and that sent my mind into a frenzy (accompanied by the ping-pang-pow sound effect of a Daily Double). Alex Trebek's name is synonymous with Jeopardy! for a reason: He is an astoundingly great host who knows so much trivia and loves the learning process. You might think his knack for accents and correcting contestants is pretentious or annoying, but that discipline is so essential to the dignity and respect of the show's difficult material. Hell, this man hosts the National Geography Bee every year. He is a TV legend and it pains me to think of him departing the series.

But the task becomes a little bit easier when I think of some of the qualified people who could replace him. A few names have been thrown about loudly -- particularly Matt Lauer's and Anderson Cooper's...

Oddest Cast Ever Assembled for New Indie Film Gravedigger
Covering the horror scene as long as we have, we've seen some pretty eclectic cast lists, but with its assortment of reality TV stars, ex-baseball players, lady wrestlers, and a musician (oh yeah, there are a few regular actors in there, too), Gravedigger could be the oddest one yet!

From the Press Release:

Have you ever felt you needed to just bury your guilt? Literally...

Currently filming is 2013’s most gruesome tale of fear and fright, Gravedigger. A sinister collaboration among the minds of award-winning actor Keith Collins (Stuck in the Middle, The Meat Puppet), Doug Bollinger (Waltzing Anna), and Brandon Ruckdashel (“Co-ed Confidential”) and from the eerie ink of NY Emmy-award winning writer Joseph Pepitone and his brother, Billy Pepitone (Stuck in the Middle), Gravedigger is a horrifying shockfest that will keep you on the edge of your seat and the brink of insanity throughout a terrifying journey of paranoia.

TV on Tap: Taissa Fermiga is Returning to "American Horror Story," The Wanted Get a Reality Show and Pilot Roles for Dave Annable, Ellie Kemper and John Corbett
Community is back! High-five! Or just a self-five if you still miss Liz Lemon.

News

Dave Annable has joined a comedy pilot. Joe, Joe and Jane follows an author who struggles to balance the needy demands of his wife and his best friend. Annable will play the best friend.

It's official. Taissa Farmiga has joined the third season cast of American Horror Story.

I learned about the greatness of Margo Martindale from her supporting role on The Riches, was thrilled to see her get her due with the accolades for her Justified role and eagerly await getting to see her on The Americans. Now, EW reports that Martindale is set to appear on New Girl as Nick's mom.

The Office's Ellie Kemper (who we still love) has joined a comedy pilot at NBC. Brenda Forever will follow a woman who "marches to the beat of her own drum" with...

The Results Are In: The 5 Hottest Election Anchors
First, the bad news: Watching a half-dozen channels of election coverage makes you realize how little racial diversity is represented among male news anchors. The women fare a little better, but it's ultimately kind of depressing. Secondly, the good news: Wow, there are a lot of hot silver foxes reading teleprompters nowadays! That's everyone's victory. Since we're still on a high from last night's results, let's rank the five hottest men who donned ties and furrowed their brows at us over expensive desks.

5. John King (CNN)

The man loves a touch-screen, doesn't he? The 49-year-old hunk used his athletic fingertips to point out the blueness of blue states and the redness of red states, and while there's a sensual element to that, you have to chuckle at what's becoming obligatory election choreography. It's like less strenuous Vanna White handiwork. But that's Ok. Turn me like a consonant, John!

4. Scott Pelley...
