Yesterday was a big day for fans of the 1996 classic Trainspotting, with Sony Pictures releasing a brief trailer to commemorate the start of principal photography. Now that production is under way, the studio has made another announcement, revealing that this sequel will debut domestically in limited release on February 3, 2017, before expanding into wide release on February 10, 2017. This release date currently has three highly-anticipated sequels circling its perimeter, so we'll have to wait and see how Trainspotting 2 fares at the box office.
Entertainment Weekly broke the news of this release, which should fare well in its limited opening frame, with only one other movie, Paramount's Same Kind of Different As Me hitting theaters that weekend. On February 10, though, the movie will be going up against Universal's Fifty Shades Darker, Warner Bros.' spinoff The Lego Batman Movie and Lionsgate's John Wick: Chapter 2. Before he starts shooting Fast & Furious 8 in the near future, action icon Vin Diesel is finishing production on XXX: The Return of Xander Cage. While it isn't ultimately clear when filming will wrap, the star recently shared a new video and photo from the set through his Facebook page, which gives us our first look at Samuel L. Jackson, reprising his role from 2002's xXx as Augustus Gibbons. Both the photo and video were taken at what appear to be a church set, but we don't have too many details about the scene being shot.
The actors did share a unique story about how they first met, while Vin Diesel was shooting Saving Private Ryan and Samuel L. Jackson was shooting Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace, at a sushi restaurant no less. Samuel L. Jackson also joked that he was only doing this movie so he could...

Just last week, we got the first trailer for The Lego Batman Movie. Today, we get a second trailer that goes deep inside Wayne Manor with Bruce. According to this hardcore street vigilante, The Lego Batman Movie is vastly superior to The Lego Movie because it revolves strictly around the iconic DC Comics superhero. As he explains, when you are as super as the Dark Knight, you don't get one trailer, you get Two trailers in one week!
The latest The Lego Batman Movie trailer goes deep inside Wayne Manor. Bruce Wayne is seen having a heart to heart with his dead parents. He then mistakes Alfred for an intruder and kicks him into a piano. The trusty butler has discovered that Bruce is mourning the loss of his mom and dad, and then rattles off all of the times when he last retreated to the den to stare at his vast photo gallery,...

Last month, during Jimmy Kimmel Live!'s post-Oscars show, a "deleted scene" from Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice was shown, featuring Jimmy Kimmel's discarded role as a man who unmasks both Batman (Ben Affleck) and Superman (Henry Cavill). This scene also featured a special cameo from Will Arnett, who revealed that he is Lego Batman in the new spinoff of The Lego Movie, The Lego Batman Movie. Warner Bros. decided to give us our first look at The Lego Batman Movie, on the eve of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice's release, with the first photos and a poster, and today we have the very first trailer.
The photos that debuted last week gave us our first look at Will Arnett as Lego Batman himself, along with Lego versions of the Batcave and his Batwing, but they didn't feature any other characters from this upcoming animated movie.

Ben Affleck's fourth directorial film, Live By Night, was delayed when he was sidelined by other jobs, but since he wrapped production on Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, he was able to devote more time to the movie and now Warner Bros. has given it an official release date. The period piece will hit theaters on October 20, 2017. The Prohibition-era story centers on a character named Joe Coughlin, "who rebels against his cop father and becomes a career criminal, eventually joining a mobster. He rises up the ranks as the action moves [from Boston] to Tampa, Fla., then Cuba and features rumrunners, femme fatales, betrayals and good men committing plenty of sin." Count me in.

Warner Bros. has added four new movies to its 2017 calendar today, including Ben Affleck's next directorial effort, along with a new original comedy, a horror sequel and an untitled mystery project. Deadline reports that the studio has handed out an October 20, 2017 release date for Live by Night, which was written and directed by Ben Affleck, who also stars alongside Zoe Saldana, Sienna Miller and Elle Fanning. The movie is currently the only project slated for release on that date, coming one week after Universal's thriller The Snowman, starring Michael Fassbender.
Live by Night is based the novel of the same name by Dennis Lehane, which follows Joe Coughlin (Ben Affleck), the son of a police captain who gets dragged into the world of organized crime. The story is set in the Prohibition Era of the 1920s. Zoe Saldana also stars as Graciella Suarez, who Joe meets while he's on business in Tampa.

Ben Affleck bootlegging drama Live By Night will finally make its bow in October of next year, Warner Bros. revealed today, with horror sequel Annabelle 2 also securing a release date.
Originally pegged to arrive in December, 2017, Warner has reserved October 20, 2017 for Affleck’s latest directorial effort – his first since the Oscar success of Argo, no less – with the only tangible competition on course to arrive in the same window being Michael Fassbender’s The Snowman.
Elsewhere, New Line Cinema and Village Roadshow’s Fist Fight will drop on February 17, 2017, opening opposite long-gestating adaptation The Dark Tower, The Great Wall and Fox’s Maze Runner: The Death Cure – presuming it isn’t delayed to accommodate Dylan O’Brien’s injury.
Annabelle 2, meanwhile, is now due to arrive on May 19, 2017 where it will face stiff competition in the form of Paramount’s Baywatch movie reboot. Lastly, August 11, 2017 has been reserved for a WB event film,...

Liosngate has shifted release dates for two of its high-profiles movies set for 2017, Power Rangers and their final Divergent movie, The Divergent Series: Ascendant. Power Rangers shifts from a January 13, 2017 release to March 24, 2017, the date previously held by The Divergent Series: Ascendant, which now moves to a summer release on June 9, 2017. It's possible that the surprisingly competitive weekend of January 13, 2017 lead to these release date shifts.

Following the modest success of M. Night Shyamalan's The Visit, Universal Pictures has set a January 20, 2017 release date for the director's next project, now entitled Split. As of now, Split is the first movie to claim the January 20, 2017 release date, but it is currently surrounded by a slew of high-profile projects. Opening on January 13, 2017 is Sony's The Dark Tower, Paramount's Friday the 13th, Warner Bros.' Geostorm, Lionsgate's Power Rangers and 20th Century Fox's Hidden Figures. One week later, on January 27, 2017, Sony will release Resident Evil: The Final Chapter.

James McAvoy has already signed on to star, alongside Haley Lu Richardson, Anya Taylor-Joy, Betty Buckley and Jessica Sula. Briefly: Shyamalan's new thriller has a date for early 2017. Over at The Wrap, they report that Universal Pictures and Blumhouse Productions have set a release for M. Night Shyamalan's Split on January 20th, 2017. Split is written and directed by Shyamalan, following up his return to low budget films The Visit this year, and is supposedly a "suspense thriller with elements of the supernatural". Other than that, there's no plot info available. The cast includes James McAvoy, Anya Taylor-Joy, Betty Buckley, Jessica Sula and Haley Lu Richardson. There's already a lot of other weird horror scheduled for January 2017 between the delayed Friday the 13th reboot, Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, plus Power Rangers and The Dark Tower movie. I'm curious what exactly Shyamalan's Split means - maybe split personality? McAvoy would be a great pick.

When Sony blew the lid off its release schedule, penciling in launch dates for the likes of Underworld 5, The Dark Tower and Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, the studio also showed some love to its dormant 90s action series by slating both Bad Boys 3 and Bad Boys 4 for arrival in 2017 and 2019, respectively.
Seems Marcus Burnett and Mike Lowrey are coming back in a major way, right? Not so fast. Will Smith cast doubt over the possibility of him returning as the latter narcotics detective for the long-rumored sequel. Although, during an interview with Zane Low for Beats 1 Radio, the actor appeared much more optimistic about the actioner, even going so far as to say that fans could expect Bad Boys 3 at some point within the “next 12 to 16 months.”

Studios have even gone to great lengths to move the release dates of their films so that they.re not competing with another project. Sony Pictures Entertainment today unveiled release dates for 16 films for the studio’s 2016 and 2017 slates.
The additions compose a diverse, globally oriented mix of films, including new films with franchise potential (The Dark Tower, Uncharted, Patient Zero), established franchises (Bad Boys 3 and 4, Resident Evil, Underworld), adaptations of strong and beloved source material (The Magnificent Seven, Jumanji, Barbie), and daring original films (Passengers, Money Monster, The Shallows, Baby Driver, The Lamb).

Sony Pictures just announced a Slew of upcoming release dates for their upcoming film slate, including new dates for the long-gestating Uncharted and Dark Tower adaptations, along with a Jumanji reboot, Two Bad Boys sequels, and lots more. Come inside to check it all out!
Going to be entirely honest here...I was Not expecting Sony Pictures would announce release dates for 16 films on their upcoming 2016 and 2017 slate. Yet, here we are! This isn't exactly unprecedented, as many major studios reveal their big list of release dates in one fell swoop, but I think the films listed are what's most interesting. I'll let you look at the list first, then we'll talk about them.

Exclusive: As Sony Pictures preps The Dark Tower (talks are starting with Nikolaj Arcel to direct) and the Paul Feig-directed Ghostbusters as new franchises, and prepares to compete to re-up for the right to keep making James Bond movies when its deal expires after the upcoming Spectre (as our sister publication Variety uncovered), the studio is also getting close to untangling the web of intrigue over the next iteration of Spider-Man. Tom Hardy is no stranger to the DC Comics universe, having played Bane in 2012's The Dark Knight Rises, and he was almost set to play Rick Flagg in Suicide Squad before he dropped out. As it turns out, the actor is developing a mysterious new project with both Warner Bros. and , which incorporates a number of different comic and non-comic elements, although he wouldn't specifically say what the project is. Here's what he had to say about this secret movie/tv show:
"I actually got something cooking with Warner Bros. which is also a comic book, it's a DC thing which is kind of... It's really good actually, it contains elements of all kinds of stuff. From Ocean's Eleven, to Batman, you can get all the wrappers out and it would be a big, really cool, Technicolor, Pulp Fiction... It's a psychological [frick]fest, it's absolutely awesome. HBO launched its new standalone streaming platform, HBO Now, earlier this week and is currently offering a 30-day free trial of the service. While there's plenty to be said about HBO Now and what it could mean for the future of traditional pay TV, I'm bringing it up today for one purpose: to let you know that it can be used to watch director Alex Gibney's fantastic documentary Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief for free, right now. Pay $14.99/month to use it faithfully for years to come or burn through the 30-day free trial and promptly kiss it goodbye. It makes no difference to me either way as long as you take advantage of it long enough to watch Going Clear. Premiering at Sundance earlier this year (read Matt's review), Gibney's film is an emotional, disconcerting look at the Church of Scientology from its conception by...

The big question about this current crop of news in which a "The Dark Tower" adaptation is a go is: can we trust it? This project has gone through so many iterations and been on and off so many times, I'm not convinced it's actually going to take off this time around though most entertainment news sites seem to believe that this time, for whatever reason, it's for realsies.
Since we last touched on the production, the project has gone through a couple of iterations including a series only approach, a movies only approach and even a Netflix series but they've all fallen through. BioWare has done some incredible things with the Star Wars license. While there have been some stumbles with The Old Republic, it's hard to deny how good the company is at crafting memorable Sci-Fi/Fantasy stories in general (just look at the Mass Effect and Dragon Age franchises). With another Star Wars game apparently in the works from them, I got to thinking about which other Sci-Fi/Fantasy franchises could use a great game from the Bioware team.
I'm a sucker for fun stories and epic tales; two things BioWare seems to specialize in. Since they've done so well with one of the biggest science fiction properties around, Star Wars, I'm sure they're more than able to handle other much beloved sci-fi and fantasy franchise. There are several worthy tales out there which haven't received the video game attention they deserve, or simply didn't get good games, so perhaps BioWare...

Entertainment Geekly is a weekly column that examines pop culture through a geek lens and simultaneously examines contemporary geek culture through a pop lens. So many lenses! This week there are two columns inspired by True Detective, partially because True Detective was a thought-provoking TV show which deserves a significant amount of thoughtful analysis, but mainly because I missed a column last week. Today: A consideration of where the show’s ending fits into the pantheon. Tomorrow: A meditation on the show’s meaning, or lack thereof. Spoilers follow.
True Detective only ran for eight episodes, but the final episode carried series-finale weight and expectation.

Well, it’s upon us once again, and not a moment too soon: the superlative annual comic convention Thought Bubble is back as part of both the Leeds International Film Festival and Comic Art Festival, with a signing tour currently wending its way across Britain and the main events happening this weekend at the Royal Armouries.

Billy goes once more unto the breach. Here's his review of the Revolution season 2 opener...
This review contains spoilers.
2.1 Born in the USA.
As a child, I reacted strongly to those TV shows where the characters experienced extreme jeopardy. These sent me scurrying behind a chair until the 'danger' had passed. For entirely different reasons the return of Revolution gave me that same feeling again, that hiding might be a better option to confrontation.
It's not that anything that goes on in it is sufficiently dramatic enough to warrant a panic attack or even mild concern. It's just that I suffer with an inherent low incredulity level that if exceeded, makes me feel violently nauseated, and this TV show has a knack of sending me past that point within the first five minutes of each and every episode.
On that basis, you might reasonably wonder why I review it,...
