Unfortunately, what with the decreased popularity of Hulk Hogan (one can only be on top for so long) and the utter failure of the Ultimate Warrior character to carry that torch, there really were no interesting plot angles to keep things fun and interesting. The WWF still didn't quite know what to do with Randy "Macho Man" Savage, the Hulk-Sid Justice feud was never all it was hyped to be, and Ric Flair as a major participant in the WWF cannon...you have to be kidding me. It just goes to show how desperate the company was at that time to procure top-tier athletes and entertainers.
Thus, although the stakes for this Royal Rumble were higher than they had ever been before, the entire event fizzled due to lack of interesting characters or impressive athletes. The preliminary matches are almost unwatchable, the Rumble features genuine excitement only for about every fifth or sixth participant, and even the broadcast booth isn't as strong as it once was, this time populated by Gorilla Monsoon (always very good) and Bobby "The Brain" Heenan (a terrible "negative man" compared to Jesse Ventura).
Unless you are a huge WWF fan and are watching all the events in order, this is one you could easily skip, as it will leave you unsatisfied and feel like a huge waste of time.

- Trivia"Rowdy" Roddy Piper replaced Bret "The Hitman" Hitman Hart in the WWF Intercontinental Championship against The Mountie. In kayfabe, Bret's temperature was 102 degrees and was too sick to wrestle on the day of the event. In reality, according to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Bret believed his WWF contract was up, and was talking a guaranteed contract with WCW. The plan was to have Bret debut at Clash of the Champions XVIII (1992) two days after the Rumble, possibly with the IC Title (as retaliation for Ric Flair bringing the NWA/WCW World Championship onto WWF programming). Bret's contract, however, had rolled over and he was unable to give notice. His 2007 autobiography "Hitman: My Real Life in the Cartoon World of Wrestling" confirmed the Observer's notes about the plan to lose the belt to Mountie, only for him to regain it from Piper at WrestleMania VIII (1992), but made no mention of agreeing to a WCW deal at that point in time.
- ErroresThe rules of the Royal Rumble match are that elimination occurs by leaving the ring over the top rope and onto the floor. Randy Savage forgot this when he exited the ring by jumping over the top rope to chase his on-screen nemesis Jake Roberts down the aisle. Savage's scripted elimination was to take place later in the match as part of the final four remaining wrestlers. However, he was let back into the ring, with the announcers covering for him by saying that a wrestler had to be thrown over the top rope by another wrestler in order to be eliminated from the match.

Bobby 'The Brain' Heenan, Announcer: I never thought I'd say this, but thank you Piper. It's a kilt. It's not a skirt, it's a kilt.
[Piper then nails Flair]
Bobby 'The Brain' Heenan, Announcer: You no good creep! You skirt-wearing freak! It's not a kilt, it's a skirt.
- Versiones alternativasOn the original PPVbroadcast, the crowd when cheering loudly when Sid Justice when he eliminates Hulk Hogan, who then got booed for trying to pull Sid out. Hogan wanted Sid to be his opponent for WrestleMania VIII, so in recaps shown on WWF Superstars of Wrestling (1986) and WWF Wrestling Challenge (1986), the sound is dubbed so the crowd is booing Sid and cheering Hogan. However, on the Coliseum Video/Silver Vision release, as well the Anthology and WWE Network versions, the original crowd reaction is still there.
