15 Best (or Worst) Final Destination Kills In The Movie Franchise
Image
If there’s one thing the Final Destination franchise has taught me, it ain’t a fan of Fugees. “Killing Me Softly” it does not. When the bastard comes, it comes with bloodthirsty revenge! All sadistic, all brutal, and all with some twisted sense of humor.

Piling up this list was both an easy and a hard task. I think placing them in order from least to best was rather difficult. Hence -and I might be, like our leads, cheating- why I like to see this list as my favorites one in the franchise, the ones that left an enduring impression on me right after the film concluded. As you will see, some managed to land here because of their execution, their level of fun and absurdity, how traumatic they were either for me or other people, and so on.

So without further ado, let’s kick this large chain of events off.

Fugees’ Lauryn Hill and Wyclef Jean Perform at Roberta Flack’s Memorial: Watch
Image
The life of R&b legend Roberta Flack was celebrated at a star-studded memorial in Harlem, New York’s Abyssinian Baptist Church on Monday, March 10th. Fugees members Ms. Lauryn Hill and Wyclef Jean made a surprise appearance, performing covers of Flack’s songs.

The duo took on Flack’s classic “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” before delivering Fugees’ version of “Killing Me Softly with His Song,” which launched them into stardom and remains the group’s biggest hit.

As Billboard reports, Hill prefaced their performance with a remembrance of the singer. “We weren’t formally asked to do this because I think they were a little shy in asking us to attend,” she said. “So we kind of bum-rushed the service because it really wouldn’t be possible for us to just stand by and not participate.”

Calling Flack “beyond trailblazing,” Hill continued, “Like Nina Simone,...

Killing Us Softly With Their Drama: 30 Years of Fugees Controversies
Image
During an interview to promote Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit in 1993, one of its stars, 18-year-old Lauryn Hill, talked about the positivity she wanted to convey with her still-emerging group, the Fugees. “There are serious social ills in the community,” she said. “And I’d like to address them through the music.”

But talking about her enrollment at Columbia University, Hill already appeared prematurely savvy about the tenuous world she was about to enter. “I’m going to school in case things don’t work out in show business,...

The Long, Weird Story Behind ‘Killing Me Softly with His Song’
Image
Only a few rare songs ever turn into pop classics. But this one turned into a classic twice. “Killing Me Softly with His Song” has one of the longest, weirdest stories in pop history. In the 1970s, it hit Number One as a lush soft-soul hit for the smoothed-out R&b star Roberta Flack. In the 1990s, it became a hip-hop banger for the Fugees, showcasing Lauryn Hill’s vocals. Some fans prefer the gentle, mellow Flack hit; some prefer the reggae-inflected Fugees remake. But both versions became permanent classics...

The Wiz Review: Despite Stunning Performances, New Revival Eases Aimlessly Down the Road
Image
Before Dorothy’s mother passed away, she had a favorite saying, as Aunt Em reminds her grieving niece in the opening scene of The Wiz: “The hard stuff is there to let you know just how good you got it.” And while that’s a curious mantra to undergird a production of a Broadway musical, there’s something to it in the latest revival.

The first musical by a Black composer to win Tony Awards for best musical and best score, this well-loved show turns 50 next year. If Schele Williams’s simplistic and sometimes bewildering staging doesn’t itself demonstrate how the show has held up across those decades, she wisely steers all attention toward the main event: the stunning vocal performances from her cast. And since the show’s underwhelming visuals feel like less of a distraction than an afterthought, it’s easy enough to put the “hard...

HBO and Max New Releases: November 2023

Hip-Hop Celebrates Its Golden Anniversary at Yankee Stadium
Image
There was a cipher going on outside the Hip-Hop 50 Live show at Yankee Stadium. One woman took the mic, intently closing her eyes while focusing on her next bar. As I walked away, she rhymed an improvisational derivative of recuperate, before spitting “that’s not even a word, I just be sayin’ shit.” The line set an apropos tone for the day. Hip-hop was bore out of rule-shirking and boundless imagination — and it made its way to “the house that Ruth built” to celebrate its 50th anniversary.

Hip-Hop 50: Run-dmc, Slick Rick, Doug E. Fresh, Snoop Dogg, Nas, Lauryn Hill Perform at Yankee Stadium
Image
Returning to hip-hop’s birthplace, classic rappers who pioneered the sound — as well as those who have proudly carried the rap torch — joined forces to honor the genre’s 50th birthday and celebrate its historic and global impact on pop culture.

It was only fitting that a venue as iconic as Bronx’s Yankee Stadium became the home for the eight-hour celebration, which included three dozen performers and nearly 50,000 audience members.

The universal love for rap was at the center of the night, and rappers like Nas and Snoop Dogg owned the night while also honoring those who came before them.

During his set, Nas brought out hip-hop founding father DJ Kool Herc and told the crowd: “This is our love. This is our bloodline.” Herc, 68, earned a standing ovation and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this year. Kool G Rap also appeared onstage alongside Nas,...

Nadine El Roubi Defies Afro-Arab Taboos, One Freestyle At A Time

Nadine El Roubi couldn’t care less about the haters.

At 27, the Sudanese independent artist has learned to embrace her womanhood and confront Afro-Arab taboos head-on, dismissing critics without a second thought.

Take her feel-good anthem “New Era,” an electrifying declaration of her evolved mentality: “Let these bitches know I’m stepping in a new era/It’s a mindset/She’s a goal getter/Hating never made a bag/Honey do better/Over it like whatever.”

The trap-infused track, and its fierce cover art, radiate confidence, empowerment, and a rebellious allure,...

The Hot Spot Blu-ray Review
Image
The Film

Neo-Noir has always been a sweaty genre. Body Heat, which drips with heat, tension and sex, may be the sweatiest of them all, but The Hot Spot isn’t far behind.

One hot day, Harry Maddox (Don Johnson) shows up in a tiny Texas town. He gets a job as a car salesman by simply walking on to the lot and selling one. Set up, he turns his eyes first to the beautiful young receptionist (Jennifer Connelly) at a neighbouring business, then to his boss’ wife (Virginia Madsen) and finally to the local bank, staffed entirely by volunteer firefighters; a detail that gives Harry an idea.

There could have been few films more suited to screening during the heatwave we’re having than this one. During the daytime, director Dennis Hopper’s whole colour scheme is bright and sun-scorched, the heaviness of the heat is palpable, and that...

Lauryn Hill Hosts Fugees Reunion at Philadelphia’s Roots Picnic: Watch
Image
Ms. Lauryn Hill staged a surprise Fugees reunion during her solo headlining set at Philadelphia’s 2023 Roots Picnic on Saturday, bringing together the hip-hop trio for the first time since their 2021 comeback tour was delayed, and eventually canceled.

The group reconvened at the end of the New Jersey singer-rapper’s stacked set, which comprised most of her 1998 Album of the Year winner, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. Following her fan-favorite cover of Frankie Valli’s “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You,” Hill introduced her long-time bandmates, Wyclef Jean and Pras Michel, by exclaiming, “These are my brothers!”

The six-song mini-set closed out her performance and included the title track from their 1996 album The Score as well as certified classics like “How Many Mics,” “Zealots,” “Ready or Not,” and “Killing Me Softly.” They wrapped with the self-referential anthem, “Fu-Gee-La.” Watch fan-captured footage of Lauryn Hill’s set, plus the Fugees reunion,...

The Fugees Reunite At Philadelphia’s “Roots Picnic” Concert For What May Be A Final Performance
Image
The Fugees surprised concertgoers Saturday during Lauryn Hill’s headlining set at the Roots Picnic music festival. The three band members, including Wyclef Jean and Pras Michel, did a six-song set in celebation of Hill’s 25th anniversary for her landmark album, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.

Sadly, it may be the last time the three are together on a stage. Michel was found guilty earlier this year on federal charges including conspiracy, witness tampering, and failing to register as an agent of China. He faces a sentence of up to 20 years.

The Fugeees had planned a reunion tour that was canceled by the Covid-19 pandemic. They played one reunion show in 2021.

On Saturday, The Fugees did a six-song set that included “How Many Mics,” “Ready or Not,” “Killing Me Softly,” and “Fu-Gee-La.”

Questlove, who produced the show, wrote on Instagram, “@MsLaurynHill did us a solid by letting us not...

Eighteen months after Fugees abruptly canceled their much-anticipated reunion tour, the trio of Lauryn Hill, Wyclef Jean and Pras Michel shared the stage for what could be the last time Saturday at Philadelphia’s Roots Picnic.

During the tail end of Hill’s headlining set at the Roots’ annual party, the singer brought out her surprise guests for a six-song mini-set that featured Fugees classics like “How Many Mics,” “Ready or Not,” “Killing Me Softly” and a concert-ending “Fu-Gee-La.”

Chen Kaige Sets ‘Swan Song’ Tchaikovsky Epic as Next Directorial Project
Image
Leading Chinese film director Chen Kaige is poised to shoot historical epic “Swan Song” as his next feature movie. It will focus on 18th century classical music composer Pyotr Tchaikovsky through critical failure, persecution for his sexuality and a mysterious death during the strife of the soon-to-collapse Russian Empire.

Moonstone Entertainment will launch pre-sales on the film at Cannes later this month. Production is scheduled to begin in late 2024 and early 2025 in the Baltics.

“Swan Song” was written by Shahar Stroh, who will also produce alongside Moonstone principal Etchie Stroh. Corporate credits go Moonstone Entertainment and Strohberry Films.

“The story of ‘Swan Song’ goes beyond the music of one man. It is about the perpetual struggle of beauty and love against darkness and hate, and I am excited to be bringing it to a global audience,” said Chen in prepared comments. “Creating a visually stunning and compelling story, paired with Tchaikovsky’s timeless music,...

Jennifer Lopez's The Mother: Where You've Seen The Cast Before
Image
The Mother is a 2023 action drama produced by Netflix and starring Jennifer Lopez, who leads a strong cast of actors. In The Mother, a deadly assassin has left the criminal world and lived quietly, avoiding contract killers who seek her out. After one too many failed assassination attempts, the contract killers get her out of hiding by targeting the woman’s daughter, whom she gave up at birth. Originally hoping to keep the daughter away from her criminal life, the Mother is forced to confront her past to save her daughter. The Mother is Niki Caro’s eighth feature film after Whale Rider (2002) and Mulan (2020), among others.

While avoiding these contract killers, the Mother and her daughter have the almost equally dramatic tension of repairing a fundamentally broken relationship. It’s a globetrotting movie that goes from snow-filled mountains to sunny locales as the characters fight and flee from their pasts.

Heather Graham
What Happened to Heather Graham?
Heather Graham
As far as 1990s dreamgirls go, Heather Graham was at the top of the list for many of us. An ageless beauty who looks the same as she did twenty-five years ago, Graham has one of the most interesting careers of the era. Having started as the love interest in the Corey Haim/Corey Feldman teen cult classic Licence to Drive, she quickly established her serious acting chops in 1989’s Drugstore Cowboy. The movie helped launch her as an indie “It girl,” with her landing memorable roles on Twin Peaks (and the Fire Walk With Me movie), Six Degrees of Separation and more. She had a unique role as the object of Jon Favreau’s affections in Swingers but then hit the big time with her iconic part as Rollergirl in Paul Thomas Anderson’s Boogie Nights.

This movie led to her getting a lot of big roles in the years that followed,...

2023 Grammys: Will Beyonce’s ‘Renaissance’ make her the first Black woman to win Album of the Year since Lauryn Hill?
Image
The 65th Annual Grammy Awards are set to be telecast live, February 5, on CBS, with Beyonce leading the way with nine nominations for her critically acclaimed album, “Renaissance.” While many consider Queen B the clear frontrunner to take the evening’s top prize, Album of the Year, it is worth examining the terrible track record the Grammy Awards have had with women of color.

As main album artists, Black women make up around 10 percent of all Album of the Year nominees in the 64-year history of music’s most prestigious event. Of those nominees, only three women were able to pull off a win (less than five-percent of all winners). So while Beyonce may be leading on our Gold Derby racetrack, I can’t help but wonder if we’ll see a repeat of her 2017 loss for “Lemonade,” where she was heavily favored but still lost to Adele (“25”).

See Grammys R&b predictions,...

Ken Jeong Whips Up Operatic ‘Jennifer Hudson Show’ Commercial Break Theme Song on the Spot
Image
Ken Jeong showed off his range during a recent appearance on the Jennifer Hudson Show. Stopping by to discuss stand-up comedy and his dream to have Hudson on the Masked Singer, on which he serves as both judge and comedic relief, the comedian whipped up an operatic commercial break theme song for the daytime talk show on the spot.

“We’ll be back with the Jennifer Hudson Show,” he sang on a simple enough hook while playing piano. Repeating the single lyric with increasing vibrato and chaos, he instructed the...

Image
Click here to read the full article.

A representative for Roberta Flack announced Monday that the Grammy-winning musician has Als, commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, and can no longer sing.

The progressive disease “has made it impossible to sing and not easy to speak,” Flack’s manager Suzanne Koga said in a release. “But it will take a lot more than Als to silence this icon.”

The announcement of the amyotrophic lateral sclerosis diagnosis comes just ahead of the premiere of Roberta, a feature-length documentary debuting Thursday at the Docnyc film festival.

Flack is known for hits like “Killing Me Softly With His Song” and “The First Time I Ever Saw Your Face,” the latter of which catapulted her into stardom after Clint Eastwood used it as the soundtrack for a love scene in his 1971 movie Play Misty for Me.

The release says that the Grammy-winning singer and pianist,...

It’s unknown how long Flack has been suffering from Als, often known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, a condition in which a person’s nerves break down over time, significantly deteriorating their functionality, especially since it affects muscle use. Als has proven to be fatal with no known cure.

News of Flack’s diagnosis comes before a few of her upcoming projects, which likely would have required her to do promotional interviews, including the January release of her children’s book, The Green Piano: How Little Me Found Music, and a PBS documentary about her.

With A Return to Live Programming, Can the Essence Festival Resume Its Dominance?
Image
After two years of virtual programming, the saints returned to New Orleans’ Caesars Superdome for the Essence Music Festival (now officially the Essence Festival of Culture) with mixed results. Nearly 30 years ago, the Black women’s magazine launched in the early 1970s created a celebration of music that has evolved into far more than a series of concerts with well-recognized brands (longtime sponsors Coca-Cola and Ford, among many others, play pivotal roles in Black consumer outreach).

Peak capitalism aside, the concerts remain a centerpiece and this year, the brand made...

Lauryn Hill and Wyclef Jean Reunite For a Performance at the Essence Festival
Image
Lauryn Hill and Wyclef Jean staged a Fugees reunion at the Essence Festival of Culture in New Orleans on Friday, July 1. Jean surprised fans when he brought out Hill during a piano performance of "Killing Me Softly" to perform four of the Fugees classic songs, as reported by Essence. The crowd went wild as the former bandmates went on to sing "How Many Mics," "Fu-Gee-La," and "Ready or Not."

Hill and Jean's reunion comes after the band, which also includes Pras Michel, canceled their planned 2021 reunion tour due to the pandemic. Ultimately, they played one show in New York City in September 2021 before canceling the rest of the tour. The historic show marked the first time the trio had performed together in 15 years. While they originally hoped to reschedule for 2022, they released a statement in January confirming the reunion tour was officially off.

"We anticipate and understand disappointment but our...

Aretha Franklin’s Granddaughter, Age 15, Auditions For ‘American Idol’ — Watch
Image
In what might be one of the biggest audition shockers in American Idol history, fifteen-year-old hopeful Grace Franklin walked out before the judges and revealed that she is the granddaughter of the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin.

Lionel Richie, who knew Aretha Franklin, was overjoyed to share stories with the teen before her performance and later called himself “Uncle Richie” as he offered advice.

After an initial attempt with a rendition of “Killing Me Softly” that judge Luke Bryan called “a little sleepy,” Katy Perry asked Franklin if she had anything else she could sing.

That turned out to be one of her legendary grandmother’s classic tunes, “Ain’t No Way.”

The clip also features the 15-year-old recalling her relationship with her grandmother.

“I don’t think I could fully grasp the fact that she was famous worldwide,” she said. “Because to me she was always grandma…I was really close to my grandma.

Aretha Franklin
Aretha Franklin’s granddaughter Grace Franklin tried out for “American Idol” on Sunday, which made for one of the more memorable audition moments in show history.

“I was really close with my grandma. I got to see her all the time. I used to travel with her a lot,” Grace told the panel.

“I don’t think I could fully grasp that she was known worldwide cause to me she was always just ‘Grandma,'” she said in another video shared on the show.

Grace said people expect her to sing like her famed grandmother, but she insisted she is her own artist with her own voice. Let’s find out, shall we?

First, the 15-year-old went with in front of judges Lionel Richie, Katy Perry and Luke Bryan with Lauryn Hill’s version of “Killing Me Softly.” That one underwhelmed Bryan, who called it “sleepy and subdued.”

Image
Jon Gregory, editor of such films as Four Weddings and a Funeral, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri and In Bruges has died, a representative confirmed to Deadline. He was 77.

Gregory worked with Mike Leigh across the director’s storied career, from an early short called The Short & Curlies to one of Leigh’s first features, High Hopes, to some of the director’s best-known work — such as Life Is Sweet, Naked and Secrets & Lies — to one of his most recent works, Peterloo.
