this movie shows the journey of life of the seventh incarnation of lord Vishnu - Ram

it is the most beautiful movie created till today . I appreciate the efforts of the director Mr. Yugo Sako to have done such a lot of research. The songs are heart rending. It is a movie to be viewed by anyone who is really interested in Ramayana. Hats Off to all who contributed in making this movie. The characters are portrayed very beautifully . The best part is every detail of the original Valmiki Ramayana has been shown which also makes it very informative. Also the songs make the whole aspect of the movie complete and provide entertainment. I specially like the music which has been composed by Mr. Vanraj Batia and the lyrics of the songs are very meaningful although they are is Sanskrit. Only flaw is that , Ram was a very powerful personality and that is why people used to like him . So ram's character should have been portrayed in a better way. But never mind that I like the efforts put in to make such a great movie. The best part is a Japanese Person made a movie on an Indian mythology!!

EPIC at its Best

I was 11 or 12 when i first watch this movie on TV.

And i was like WOW. I have already watched the Ramayana series by Ramanand Sagar which is an epic, but it had told the story in a number of episodes... while here we got the main story of prince Rama in 170 minute, although it didn't cover the whole epic but it still amazes me. The voice over actors did their best especially Amrish Puri, the gravitas his performance gives this movie is just amazing. While Arun Govil who've played Rama in Ramamnand Sagar's Ramayana before seems very suitable for the role. His voice just gives that nostalgic factor to me and many who have seen the old series.

And now let's talk about the animation... Its marvellous especially if we compare it with those produced in India even today. The hand drawn animation gives it the feel no computer generated image could compete with. This movie has give me some best memories of my childhood and that is why i still remember it. I am 19 years old by the way.

Edit: I heard they released the 4k version of it recently I hope we finally got to see it in India.

Brilliant adaptation of Ramayana

The movie is simply amazing. I watched the movie years ago and is my all time favourite. The animations are splendid and songs are heart touching. I still listen to the songs sometimes. The voice over artists did their jobs brilliantly. Watching this movie will surely give you goosebumps. The movie simplifies the original Ramayana to a great extent. This was done to make this movie appeal to the International audience. Producers have done extensive research on the topic. This is quite visible in the intricate details present in the movie. Great collaboration by Indians and Japs. A must watch for everybody and a good introduction to Hinduism and Indian culture.

Thanks for making my Childhood awesome.!!!

It's so nostalgic to see the IMDb page of this movie which I have watched many times especially in my childhood..Cartoon Network used to show this movie every now and then..Coming to the review, Great way of depicting the legendary story of Prince Ram and his exhile following the kidnapping of his wife Sita by the king of Lanka- Ravan..Ram and Laxman forming an army to defeat the mighty Ravan and get back Sita..Such a badass story shown beautifully , narrated awesomely and the movie has your attention from the start till the end. There are many series and Movies based on the story of Ramayan but this one still remains the best for me.!!!!

Best movie portraying Rama

This story is fascinating and much better than any other Rama movies. The portrayal of Rama is at its best. Firstly the character animations were excellent especially Rama's long black hair. Secondly the dialogue and songs are so prideful to us all. I also like the fight scenes which includes Rama. The final battle between Rama and Ravan was amazing as it shows the power of both warriors and how detailed animation is (exploding arrow wounding Rama, Rama covered in wounds) I would recommend anyone to watch this movie

Excellent movie

I saw this movie when I was a little kid and I've been in love with this movie since then. Animation, music, voice overs, everything is brilliant. Since the Ramayana cannot be completely illustrated within two-three hours but still, this is amazing. A must watch movie. And yes, do not watch this movie thinking you are going to watch a cartoon or something.

Epic adaptation with a muddled start

This film is a great adaptation of a much longer epic, methodically cutting down the content into a feature length film but still retaining a clear flow. The beginning suffers from this process, however, as there is too much reliance on narration and the character designs are too similar, which rushes the viewer through complex family relations too quickly. It took me a while to figure out exactly who was the brother of whom and what everyone's names were. However, after Sita gets abducted and Hanuman enters the story, the film becomes the epic it promises to be with a clear flowing story, fantastical magic and engaging battles.

Indian Anime?

Introduction: I discovered this film very recently, and what interested me enough into watching it, was the exceptionally high IMDB rating. Holding an 8.7 on the sight, it is the highest rated animated film on the website. And while I don't entirely agree with that, I can say with confidence, that this is still worthy of much praise. 'Ramayana: The Legend of Prince Rama' is an excellent example of good anime, and something I would recommend to any beginner just getting into anime.

History & Plot Synopsis: In a sort of collaboratian between both Indian and Japanese filmakers, with a budget of 13 million in USD. Completed in 1992, the film was screened in both Nations and released on home video. Later, an English dub was created and also released on home video.

The film is an anime adaptation of the Hindu epic known as, 'The Ramayana'. As the title character of Prince Rama' fights a war against the wicked King Ravana.

The Story: Adapting a story as famous as 'The Ramayana' is no easy task. As the film needs to stay accurate to the iconic Hindu epic. However, this film adapts it with flying colors. While the film is quite long, clocking in at almost three hours, making it the longest animated film I've ever watched, the movie requires the running time to fully flesh out the story. Telling the tale as accurately as it possibly can, the film is able to respect the source material and succeed as an adaptation. And someone who likes fairy tales and fables, as well as epics and myths of all kind, I appreciate these stories and love it when they are adapted the correct way.

While the film is as I mentioned before, almost three hours, it doesn't feel as long as it is, and that's a long movie should be. It shouldn't feel long, or at least be enjoyable throughout, so you don't care about the length of the film.

The Characters: This film pitch perfectly adapts the characters from the story of the epic it's based on. King Ravana, the wicked King, is portrayed perfectly, as he would use any excise to declare war, to expand his own power. Rama, the courageous prince, and the hero of the story, roped into a situation where he's forced to go to war. And many of the other characters are all well adapted and very interesting in their own respect.

The Animation: This is sadly the weakest aspect of the film. While not bad, it isn't the best quality, and from the highest rated animated film on the site, I aspect something a little better.

Again, I'm not saying it's bad, it's okay. And yes, the animation doesn't have to look amazing, it can be okay. However, I also aspect something a little better from an anime. As someone who loves anime, part of the reason I love it is because of the excellent animation, which gives me a higher standard for anime than any other kind of animation. And from an anime, I want great visuals, and the film simply doesn't have that. Other than that, this film is great example of how good anime can be.

Ramayana: The Legend of Prince Rama - A Visually Striking but Spiritually Hollow Retelling

As a Muslim viewer watching Ramayana: The Legend of Prince Rama, I approached this film with curiosity and openness. I understand that the story is legendary in nature, and while I don't share the belief system it's based on, I do appreciate stories with strong narrative arcs, moral struggles, and cultural richness. However, despite its promise, this film is a mixed bag.

First and foremost, the animation is undeniably impressive - especially considering the film was released in 1992. A co-production between Indian and Japanese studios, the movie brings a vivid, almost ethereal visual style that blends traditional Indian motifs with anime aesthetics. The fight scenes are dynamic, the cinematography is thoughtful, and the overall atmosphere is often quite beautiful. The background score and songs are soulful, and there's a distinct charm in the simplicity of their arrangement.

Another strength is the character design, particularly of the Vanaras (Hanuman's tribe), which manages to retain a mythical essence without leaning too heavily into caricature. Hanuman's presence brings energy and emotional depth, while the visual symbolism occasionally delivers moments of silent poignancy.

Unfortunately, the story - the heart of any epic - is where this film stumbles hard.

While I understand the difficulty in condensing an epic as vast as Ramayan into a two-hour movie, the narrative pacing feels rushed, stripping away the emotional gravity and moral complexity that the story is known for. Important scenes flash by without development, and the characters - especially Sita, Lakshman, and even Ram - often feel like sketches of themselves rather than fully realized individuals. The film sacrifices nuance for spectacle.

There are also cultural and historical inaccuracies that are difficult to overlook. For instance:

Ram's complexion is shown inaccurately as pale, whereas he's traditionally described as dark-complexioned - often blue or brown.

Bharat did not banish Ram; rather, his role in the original story is one of sorrow and respect for his elder brother.

Ravan's character is reduced to a mere villain, neglecting his complex origins. The film ignores that Ravan was a Brahmin and a highly learned individual, becoming 'demonic' through his actions rather than birth. Such simplifications are not just inaccurate - they erase key philosophical aspects of the original Ramayan.

Iconic moments like the abduction of Sita or Hanuman's search for Sanjeevani are either altered or underplayed, removing both spiritual weight and narrative tension.

As someone who respects storytelling across cultures, I find it troubling when sacred or meaningful texts are flattened into mere "action-adventure" tales. The spiritual and moral lessons of Ramayan - which give it its timeless relevance - are lost in this adaptation, replaced by simplistic good-vs-evil tropes.

And don't even get me started on the English dub - the voice acting is so lifeless and awkward that it borders on comical. If you must watch this, go for the Hindi version with subtitles.

Ramayana: The Legend of Prince Rama is a visually ambitious and technically respectable piece of animation that deserves credit for its artistic value, especially considering its time of release. But as a retelling of one of the most revered epics in South Asian culture, it falls short in depth, accuracy, and emotional resonance.

For someone unfamiliar with Ramayan, this might serve as a surface-level introduction. But for anyone who knows or reveres the text - or simply expects a faithful, meaningful adaptation - this film is more of a missed opportunity than a masterpiece.

Jai Sree Ram 🇮🇳 🇯🇵 🤝

Many don't know that this was actually made by Japan as a friendship bond between India and Japan. A perfect depiction is made into this Anime. Wonderful 😌. Bollywood seriously needs to learn from this movie, Japanese makers have more knowledge than Bollywood.

There's a correction in the movie. Vanara's army has been continuously called as Army of monkeys, which is false. Monkeys were called Kapi or Markata in Sanskrit. Kishkindha, kingdom of Vanara's is current day Hampi, Karnataka. In Sanskrit 'Vana' means 'Forest' & 'Nara' means 'Man' which literally means Men of the Forest. Many misunderstands that Vanara's came only from Kishkindha to war. But the truth is on Sugreev's order, Vanara's came from whole of the earth such as Vindhyas, Tibet, 'Ilavarta-varsha', a place where there was dark and light for 6 months i.e Polar regions as mentioned in Valmiki Ramayana. According to Valmiki, Vanara's were even described as 'Kapi-Kunchara' which means Elephant sized Monkeys in Sanskrit.

Description of Vanara's in Ramayana exactly matches with Anthropological features of Neantherthel men such as big and sloppy foreheads, residing in caves, humaid bone, hairy bodies, protruding jaw bone, etc. We can still find interconnected mountain caves in Hampi even today, which was residence of Sugreev's army. Neantherthel men said to gone extinction by atleast 2,30,000 years by modern researchers. Tails of Neantherthel men were never proven to be existed as tails had no bones and flesh of the tails decay sooner.

NOTE: Ramayana is an 'Ithihas' i.e. History not any mere mythology. 'Theory of Evolution', 'Homo Sapiens (we) evolved only 200,000 years ago' - All these are western scientist's statements. As Vedic culture is the only culture, which describes history beyond 10,000 BC, the world is described well in both Ramayana and Mahabharata.

Best Ever! Nothing like it!

It's the best animation film based on Lord Shri Rama's Ramayana.

It describes the whole incidents with the natural essence that is very essential for remembering this supreme EPIC.

The things which are really admirable. 1.Character Development 2.Screenplay 3.Background Music (at it's best) 4.Various Destinations 5.Story Telling 6.Fight Scenes 7.Direction and Cinematography

Although,it's a little bit fast like it doesn't shows the fight between Sugriva and Bali,Ashok Vatika fights, etc.

but, eventually not showing these doesn't impact any bad on this marvelous film.

Because of these qualities every time I watched this film it makes me feels like it was the first time.

So,give yourselves the pleasure to get involved into this Eternal Historical EPIC.

🙏🙏🙏 Jai Shree Ram 🙏🙏🙏

"...this ridiculous threat, from a handful of men and monkeys"

A summary of the adventures of Rama, Vishnu's 7th incarnation. From meeting the love of his life, Sitra, to battling alongside the Monkey Kingdom in a daring mission to liberate the island of Lanka and rescue her from a kidnapping Demon. It was clearly made with the intent of sharing this Indian myth.

With great style and Ghibli-like visuals, with beautiful backgrounds and scenery, and excellent choreographies and fluid animations. Unfortunately, the narrative doesn't quite match the Japanese skills for animation. The story feels unevenly edited, occasionally jumping over key developments and suffers from pacing issues. A smoother start and storytelling could have at least improved the experience significantly.

Despite it all, it remains an enjoyable watch, with a good resolution and great character moments (even the opposing commanders during the War scenes). Ultimately, it's the animation that carries the film and makes it quite worth the journey.

Full of inaccuracies

I am giving 5 out of 10, because of the effort spent on excellent Animation. Other than this, there is nothing good about the movie. The Movie is filled with historical and cultural inaccuracies. Few of them I'd like to share here:

1. Without any idea of color discrimination, Ram was not 'White' as shown in the movie. He was more brownish-bluish. Colloqually, I think we can say he was Dark-Complexioned.

2. His Younger Brother Bharat did not banish him. In Older times in India and still in some part of India, it is rude and a gross dis-respect on the part of younger brother to say against his Big brother. The Director, I think just could understand or was unable to portray the role played by Rams Step mother Kaikai and her servant(or Daasi, Manthara)

3. During Sita's abduction, there was no struggle between Ram and Ravan.

4. When Laxman was mortally wounded and Hanuman went to bring the Medicine, he could not recognize which medicine to choose, because they all glittered in Darkness. I think we are too much rational , that is why we fail to understand things that predates even our thoughts.

5. The Biggest and most arrogant mistake of all. Ravan and his family and his forefathers were not Daemons at all by birth. Ravan was one of the most learned human being that walked this earth. He became a daemon by his deeds. His father 'Sage Pulatsya' was a man of great penance. His younger brother 'Kumbhakarn' was also a very learned being. All the time during the battle and after he abducted Sita, he knew that he has in fact abducted his own death, but he went ahead for the sake of his prestige. He wanted to show the world, to get rid of his tyranny and tortuous way of ruling, God himself have to take birth in human form and get rid of this world of his evil deeds. Any ways, thats what the actual 'Ramayan' says. Ravan was a 'Brahman' by birth and not a daemon. People need to understand that just by being born in a noble family does not makes you noble, you have to prove yourself by your deeds or 'KArma' and Ravan was daemon by his 'Karma' and not by birth or 'Janma'.

People need to see 'Ramayan' which ran as a TV series for more than 2 years in India. The Video is available in Google, I'm not sure though they subtitles are in English. A little bit of Amazon will help.
