In an interview, Director John Roecker claimed he chose Billie Joe Armstrong to play Charlie because "no one thought he could". According to the director, he was told by friends that Billie Joe couldn't perform as the infamous Charles Manson because he was "too nice of a guy".

At the time of filming, a vast majority of the voice actors were members of well-known rock bands. Davey Havok was a member of AFI, Travis Barker was a member of Blink-182, Billie Joe Armstrong, Tré Cool, and Mike Dirnt were all part of Green Day, Janis Tanaka played for Fireball Ministry and Hammers OF Misfortune, John Doe was a member of The Flesh Eaters, brothers Benji Madden and Joel Madden were founding members of Good Charlotte, Rob Zabrecky belonged to Possum Dixon, Tim Armstrong, Lars Frederiksen, Matt Freeman, and Brett Reed all were members of Rancid, Henry Rollins was the founder and lead singer of Rollins Band, Theo Kogan was the founder and lead singer of Theo & the Skyscrapers, Nick 13 was a member of Tiger Army, Rob Aston belonged to The Transplants, Warren Fitzgerald was part of The Vandals (and formerly of Oingo Boingo), and Sean Yseult was a member of White Zombie. Kelly Osbourne was not really part of a band, but had some success as a solo artist.

The title of this film, Live Freaky Die Freaky (2006), which is also the name of one of the songs in the film, was first coined by Los Angeles Times columnist Patt Morrison in an article she wrote describing the Manson family and their crimes.

Feature film debut of Jason Schmidt, who plays the Nomad, the only live-action character in this film. As of 2023, it is Schmidt's only acting credit.

With the exception of Asia Argento, Doug McKean, and Jason Schmidt, all the other voice actors in this movie are professional musicians who have released their music commercially. Argento had only acted prior to this film, but later released a solo album in 2008. McKean is a studio engineer who worked with several of the musicians in this movie. Schmidt has this movie as his sole acting credit.
