It’s been nearly 50 years since a certain shark-centric thriller made audiences everywhere scared to get back in the water. But with his new horror film “Dangerous Animals,” director Sean Byrne and his cast want to correct the species’ misrepresentation displayed in “Jaws” by terrifying viewers with the true top of the food chain: the human being.

But not just any old human. In “Dangerous Animals,” Jai Courtney portrays a charming yet brutal serial killer named Tucker who uses the ocean to live out his own killer instincts. Film and TV production happens fast. Even a series as blown about by the waves as “Doctor Odyssey” needs to navigate between the Scylla of ocean exteriors and Charybdis of network procedural turnarounds. The visual effects team, led by VFX supervisor Jason Piccioni, has only about a week and a half per episode. So on the midseason two-parter, “Shark Attack,” they needed to be very strategic about when, how, and why we see the titular predators from the deep blue sea.

That specific challenge got the IndieWire Craft team thinking about how lean and mean you could get a VFX setup to create the shark that kamikaze-swims into the Odyssey’s propeller, the orcas that ram its hull, and the menacing fins that circle in the dark waters while our hero medics are (improbably) out in a support boat.

The “Doctor Odyssey” crew will be rattled by a shark attack beginning with Thursday’s midseason premiere, entitled, appropriately enough, “Shark Attack!”

The shark storyline begins when First Officer Munroe (Marcus Emanuel Mitchell) is bitten after he goes surfing with Tristan (Sean Teale) and, as Teale told TheWrap about the two-parter storyline, “Shark attacks are brutal and it only gets worse as the episodes go on.”

Teale told TheWrap, “It’s pretty rough. I’m amazed at what we filmed, actually. I’m surprised that national television is going to receive what we filmed. It’s a big event.”

Magenta Light Studios has secured the U.S. distribution rights for “Deep Water,” a new thriller directed by Renny Harlin, known for his work on “The Strangers” trilogy. The film, starring Aaron Eckhart and Ben Kingsley, comes from Arclight Films and is set for a theatrical release later this year.

“Deep Water” tells the story of a group of international passengers traveling from Los Angeles to Shanghai. When their plane is forced to make an emergency landing in shark-infested waters, they must set aside their differences and work together to escape both the sinking wreckage and the hungry predators circling them.

The cast also includes Molly Belle Wright, Angus Sampson, and Kelly Gale. Norwegian filmmaker Tommy Wirkola (Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, Dead Snow, Violent Night) is headed into the open waters for a shark attack horror movie that’s been newly titled Beneath the Storm, and we’ve learned that it’s swimming our way next year.

Columbia Pictures will release Beneath the Storm in theaters August 1, 2025.

Phoebe Dynevor (Fair Play), Whitney Peak (Hocus Pocus 2) and Djimon Hounsou (A Quiet Place: Part II) star in Beneath the Storm, produced by Adam McKay and Kevin Messick.

Wirkola’s project is one of many new shark attack movies in the works, with Lizzy Greene starring in High Tide and Sean Byrne directing Dangerous Animals, to name just a couple.

The prospect of a shark attack movie directed by Tommy Wirkola is particularly exciting, however, as Wirkola’s movies are always wildly entertaining and extremely bloody.

From the writer of Shark Side of the Moon comes The Asylum’s Shark Warning, which is first swimming to limited theaters on July 26 before arriving on VOD outlets on July 30.

In Shark Warning, “After 20 years, a man returns to the town where his brother was killed by a shark. But when it resurfaces and kills again, the man decides to hunt down the predator.”

Of course, the storyline is set into motion when a bunch of pesky humans commit the cardinal sin of shark attack movies, putting their own greed ahead of the safety of the town’s residents. Yup, it’s another low-budget Jaws. You already know what you’re getting from this one.

On Sunday, Hawaiian surfer and lifeguard Tamayo Perry was killed in a shark attack.

The 49-year-old, known for roles in Pirates of the Caribbean and Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle, was killed on Oahu’s north shore, where he had worked as a lifeguard for eight years.

“It is with profound sadness that we mourn the loss of one of our incredibly dedicated City and County of Honolulu lifeguards, who tragically lost his life today in an apparent shark attack on the North Shore,” Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi said in a statement.

The catacombs of Paris have been the subject of many movies over the years, but now they have a shark swimming around in them for good measure in the aptly titled, Under Paris. While this seems to have worked in terms of the movies instant leapfrog over Japans finest export, it hasnt resulted in the greatest run of reviews from audiences.

It seems like we just keep reporting on brand new shark attack horror movies, and that’s definitely not a complaint. This next one is titled High Tide, and Deadline brings us the scoop.

Deadline details, “Lizzy Greene will play Hannah who, mourning the death of her sister, takes off around the world. Her journey leads her to Fiji and on a tour of an isolated atoll – a volcanic island that disappears with each high tide. But when the group are stranded, the rapidly rising ocean begins to reveal its terrifying inhabitants.”

David Straiton (“Hemlock Grove”) is directing High Tide.

I’m reaching my breaking point with shark attack movies that are too distracted by other plotlines to deliver on their promise: shark attacks. Hayley Easton Street’s Something in the Water might be the biggest offender listed, taking roughly thirty minutes until the first shark-related incident, then another fifteen(ish) minutes for the first of frustratingly few substantial shark spottings. Cat Clarke’s screenplay tries to establish poignant storytelling about hate crimes, broken relationships, and debilitating traumas, but in doing so, forgets about the massive shark plastered all over the film’s marketing materials. Street and Clarke aim to elevate shark cinema with emotional throughlines, but sink the entire project with an alarmingly imbalanced approach.

Australian filmmaker Sean Byrne is two-for-two with impressive feature films The Loved Ones and The Devil’s Candy, and his next horror movie will be titled Dangerous Animals.

Variety reports today that Hassie Harrison (“Yellowstone”), Jai Courtney (Terminator Genisys) and Josh Heuston (“Heartbreak High”) will star in Dangerous Animals.

In Dangerous Animals, “Zephyr (Harrison), described as a savvy and free-spirited surfer, is abducted by a shark-obsessed serial killer (Courtney). Held captive on his boat, she must figure out how to escape before he carries out a ritualistic feeding to the sharks below.

“The only person who realizes she is missing is new love interest Moses (Hueston), who goes looking for Zephyr, only to be caught by the deranged murderer as well.”

Countless shark attack horror movies have flooded the market since Steven Spielberg changed the game with Jaws back in the 1970s, but the reality is that most of them aren’t very good. For every quality shark attack movie like Deep Blue Sea or The Shallows, there are about 100 imitators that have only really served to devalue the entire subgenre in their wake.

But every so often, we get a good one. And Netflix may have one of those on their hands with Under Paris, a shark attack horror movie from French filmmaker Xavier Gens.

Fresh off the just-released action movie Mayhem!, Xavier Gens (Frontiers, Cold Skin) is back this June with Under Paris, and Netflix has unleashed the official trailer this week.

Following in the grand tradition of Jaws, a celebration turns into a PR nightmare when a hungry shark comes to Paris. One shark. A whole lot of tasty humans.
