    astute and beautiful

This is a deeply insightful film that many people are probably not going to "get" fully, as evidenced by the other reviews here!

I almost didn't choose to watch this film, because I wasn't in the mood for another wild romp about decadence and the fun of partying. However, it doesn't merely follow the main character on a crazy night of adventures, but it shows how fate guides us down the proper path through those around us if we'll just listen. It's also a kick-ass love story.

The drugs issue in the movie is well done too, showing the good and bad sides of drug use and abuse. Some drug use can open up doors towards enlightenment (though the government doesn't want you to find that out) while an addiction to cocaine can become a life-wrecking nightmare.

The script is beautifully written, and even the most bizarre characters in the film are rendered with compassion and wit, each giving insight into another aspect of humankind. This film is definitely too literary and bizarre to be embraced by the American mass market, but I loved it.

This meaningful dramatic comedy has its moments with the performances of Estevez and Weber.

Dan (Emilio Estevez) is a entertainment lawyer that is his wife (Kelly Rowan) left him for a better life. Dan decides to re-examining his life and finding himself. Dan gets together with a mysterious friend:Jeff (Steven Weber) is a smooth, fast-talking buddy will anything for Dan to have a good time.

Since Dan has one hell of a time in bars, clubs, high maintenances call girls and others things in this unforgettable night. But Dan mixes his life with fantasy, reality and everything in between. It's possible that Dan might find what's missing in his so-called life.

Written and Directed by Steven Brill (Heavyweights, Little Nicky, Mr. Deeds) made an amusing comedy with dramatic scenes and moments of truth. Although the film is never as satisfying as you'd like to be. Estevez is good in one of his few rare "adult" roles. Weber is excellent as Dan's mysterious friend. This film was first seen in Cable TV. (*** ½/*****).

    surprisingly great

This is a really great film, and it's kind of shocking, it being a straight to video release (tho its actual first release was on Starz!=.) The film stars emilio as a man who is in the middle of having his wife leave him, and he turns to anyone he can find. After calling up a number of old friends, he gets in touch with Jeff who takes him out on the town. The story is well drawn out, and it never gets boring. I love the nighttime scenes, and the photography in this movie is gorgeous. Thru the night, they meet drugged up hookers and spend time with them, they spend time at a very weird party, they golf in the middle of the night, and emilio's character gets arrested. It's a wild movie, and the tone keeps changing. One second they're at a crazy party, and the next they're discussing philosophical things while playing golf under a star filled sky. It works really well, and the changing tones is a big reason this movie is so great. It's hard to explain, but for me, it's one of those movies that mix tone and the beautiful night scenes and music together so well it gives you this weird feeling of peace. Maybe I'm losing it, but I always feel somewhat peaceful when I watch this movie. It doesn't get much better than this. 10/10

"Compare and Contrast" taken to the limits.

Late Last Night is an insane movie. I rented it looking for a fresh movie that I hadn't seen before.. the cover looked played out, but light; unlike some of the more dramatic movies I'd seen lately.

    I needed a change.. and a change I got.

When Dan comes out of the door at the start.. his face, and his breathing.. really intense.. I could just feel his mix of anger, pain and shock. I started waiting for something to happen.. anything.. finally, he walks off, kicks over his lawn decor and walks off, while some happy music plays -- the music was so off-colour that I could tell I was in for a strange ride..

Strange indeed.. as soon as he gets out of his lawn, a small kid nearly runs him over on a three-wheeler.. Dan seems to pause as he thinks about the kid.... about how he had maybe thought of having his own with the girl who is now leaving him... There are a lot of these "What-If" flashbacks throughout the movie that you start to catch on to.

After several walk-ins with self-important police and such, he lands himself at a bar.. meets some drunks who just aren't matching his mindset, and driving him mad with their drunken antics, causing him to ditch the bar to call a friend.. someone. He eventually reaches Jeff.. .apparently a very last resort, as he has tried to call his parents before this Jeff person.

Jeff is wild, Jeff is crazy... Smokes pot, pops pills, drinks like a madman, pays whores with coke and "borrows" cars. He's the black of Dan's white.

Dan is close to getting laid several times in the movie but mostly falls short.. on his own, or because of insane circumstances. I found the movie ironic, hilarious, aggravating, inspiring, sad, happy.. anything but dull and boring. There's this huge theme of 70s music throughout the show that I didn't quite understand.. but it was very coloured.

One unforgettable moment is when Dan, still high and on other drugs and alcohol, is in the back of a cop car.. after the cops joke around about beating him senseless, they tell Dan they're kidding and he both laughs and screams in angst -- isn't that indicative of life sometimes?

I highly (HIGHly) recommend watching it.. once while wasted, once while clean. It will open your eyes and massage your senses.

    Deep Dark Fun

What a surprise!!! Just when you think you have this one

figured out...you are wrong!!! Watching these guys go out in LA

is enough to make anyone happy to be home, safe away from the

freaks!! I laughed throughout and was caught off guard by the

honest, yet often ugly, reality of growing up and letting go of

    old friends and habit

    • Trivia
Emilio Estevez and Catherine O'Hara previously acted in films for which John Hughes wrote the story and screenplay. Estevez starred in El club de los cinco (1985), and O'Hara co-starred in Mi pobre angelito (1990) and Mi pobre angelito 2: Perdido en Nueva York (1992).

When Dan leaves the police station, he still has the fake coke with him. When police confiscate "unknown" substances (including breath mints and cigarettes), they do not return them. They claim to "destroy" such items ("for their protection"), so the likelihood that Dan would have it returned to him is Hollywood invention.
