Director Karan Tejpal, whose debut “Stolen” (2023) premiered in Venice’s Horizon’s strand before screening at BFI London Film Festival, Zurich Film Festival, and SXSW Sydney, has boarded Indian psychological horror feature “Ummeed” (Hope). The project, selected for the Berlin European Film Market’s Fiction Toolbox Program at Berlinale 2025, is aiming for a November production start.

The film follows a same-sex couple in small-town India pursuing parenthood through illegal sperm donation. When Tithi cannot conceive, her partner Rahi becomes pregnant, leading to a descent into paranoia fueled by societal harassment and dark secrets about the pregnancy itself.

“Though it’s wrapped in thick atmospheric dread, ‘Ummeed’ deeply moved me with the emotional complexity of the characters and their resilience against societal prejudice,” says Tejpal. “More than a psychological horror film, this is a story about redemption and hope.”

Indian talent and content management company Tulsea has expanded its roster with several significant signings, including Anasuya Sengupta, who made history as the first Indian actor to win the best actress award at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival in the Un Certain Regard category for “The Shameless,” directed by Konstantin Bojanov.

Rising star Sindhu Sreenivasa Murthy, recently named a BAFTA Breakthrough Artist for 2024, joins the agency following her breakout directing and acting turn in the Kannada-language “Aachar & Co.” Murthy has previously appeared in Netflix’s “Brahman Naman” and “Better Life Foundation.”

The new roster additions include Ahilya Bamroo, who recently debuted opposite Abhishek Bachchan in Shoojit Sircar’s “I Want to Talk,” and British actor Daniel Caltagirone, who played the antagonist in Pa Ranjith’s Tamil-language action film “Thangalan.” Both Bamroo and Caltagirone are co-represented with Independent Talent Agency (U.K.).

Former Netflix producer Dimpy Agrawal’s production banner Gubbara Entertainment has unveiled a slate of six projects at India’s Film Bazaar, including a project starring Anasuya Sengupta, who made history as the first Indian actor to win best performance at Cannes’ Un Certain Regard for “The Shameless.”

Sengupta will headline short “Ma,” penned by Columbia University Mfa graduate Riddhi Talreja (“Sadak Chaap”), examining women’s identity and motherhood in contemporary Indian society. The project has attached cinematographer Amal Sudhakaran, whose work has appeared on Netflix, Amazon, and Discovery, with one credit gaining Emmy recognition.

The slate includes “Puthussery Police Case” from writer-director Nithin Lukose, whose debut “Paka: River of Blood” premiered at Toronto in 2021. The Kerala-set drama follows a lawyer investigating his father’s death against the backdrop of a tiger threatening a rural village.

Twenty-nine film projects have been selected for the seventh edition of European Work in Progress Cologne (Ewip), the pitching event held from October 14-16.

Among the titles being pitched to an international audience of sales agents, distributors and festival programmers is Bulgarian filmmaker Stephan Komendarev’s seventh feature Made In EU, about a provincial town turning against a seamstress after it appears she is the first local to have contracted Covid.

Actress Mita Vashisht, who is known for films like ‘Droh Kaal’, ‘Dil Se..’, ‘Chhorii’ and others, is heading to the Cannes Film Festival as her film ‘The Shameless’ has been selected to be screened at the festival.

The actress recently took to her Instagram and shared the news with her followers as she uploaded the poster of the film with the Cannes Film Festival’s official tag.

Mita wrote in the caption: “We are at Cannes!!!! 2024! Shooting for The Shameless last year in March in Nepal…hadn’t realised that the next year meant I/we will be heading out to Cannes…it has still to sink in.”

The film follows the story of Rani, who is an Indian sex worker. Rani goes on a pilgrimage to a remote temple, where she confronts her past, including a love affair with a man imprisoned for murder in Bengaluru.

As expected, the Cannes Film Festival line-up is pretty spectacular with new films from Yorgos Lanthimos, Andrea Arnold and David Cronenberg heading to the fest.

As the days are getting longer and there’s a tiny bit more sunshine in between the showers of rain, that can only mean one thing. The Cannes Film Festival is almost upon us.

Of course, us peasants rarely get to go, but it is fun to read the reactions from the glitzy world premieres as the stars gather in the picturesque town of Cannes.

And this year’s festival line-up is a doozy. We already knew George Miller was heading to the Croisette with Furiosa, Francis Ford Coppola is bringing Megalopolis and Kevin Costner will be premiering his new film, too, but there’s a whole heap of great filmmakers heading out to the beach with their films.

The Official Selection for the 77th Cannes Film Festival was revealed Thursday, with 19 movies in Competition (see full lists below).

Familiar names who will launch new works in the Competition include Ali Abbasi, who brings The Apprentice, a feature pic about the early life of Donald Trump. Andrea Arnold returns with Bird, starring Barry Keoghan, and Jacques Audiard’s latest, Emilia Perez, a musical with Selena Gomez will also debut in competition.

Elsewhere, American filmmaker Sean Baker brings Anora to the Croisette. Poor Things filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos will launch Kinds of Kindness, his latest collab with Emma Stone. David Cronenberg returns with The Shrouds, and Paul Schrader will debut Oh Canada starring Jacob Elordi, Uma Thurman and Richard Gere.

Ahead of a festival kicking off in just about a month, Iris Knobloch, President of the Festival de Cannes, and Thierry Frémaux, General Delegate, have unveiled the selection of the 77th edition of the Cannes Film Festival.

Led by the previously announced major highlight, Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis, the competition lineup features the latest films from Jia Zhangke, David Cronenberg, Paul Schrader, Andrea Arnold, Sean Baker, Miguel Gomes, Yorgos Lanthimos, Jacques Audiard, Ali Abbasi, Payal Kapadia, and more.

Other sections include the previously new films from George Miller and Kevin Costner, alongside Leos Carax’s personal short C’est Pas Moi, Guy Maddin, Evan Johnson, and Galen Johnson’s Rumors, Alain Guiraudie’s Miséricorde, and more.

South Korean revenge thriller Revolver, starring Cannes award-winner Jeon Do-yeon and directed by Oh Seung-uk, has been sold to key territories in Europe and Asia by Plus M Entertainment.

The upcoming feature has been acquired for France (Bac Films), Germany (Plaion Pictures), Taiwan (Moviecloud), Vietnam (Runup Vietnam), and Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and Brunei (Purple Plan).

The film reunites Jeon, who won best actress at Cannes in 2007 for her performance in Lee Chang-dong’s Secret Sunshine, with director Oh, having previously starred in the filmmaker’s The Shameless, which played in Un Certain Regard at Cannes in 2015.

Urban Sales has acquired Bulgarian director Konstantin Bojanov’s third feature The Shameless and will launch sales for the India-set forbidden romance drama at EFM.

The love story follows two women who must wrestle with an oppressive society rooted in centuries-old patriarchal traditions.

It is Bojanov’s follow-up to Avé, that premiered at Cannes’ Critics’ Week in 2011 and Light Thereafter, a world premiere in Rotterdam in 2017.

The Shameless is produced by Switzerland’s Akka Films, France’s Urban Factory, Bulgaria’s Klas Films and Taiwan’s House on Fire.

The film is in post-production and Urban Sales will bring a promo reel to EFM.

South Korea’s Plus M Entertainment is set to launch sales on romantic drama Love In The Big City and revenge thriller Revolver at Busan’s Asian Contents & Film Market.
