Why do we tip our hats when we meet a lady -- or used to, since men don't really wear hats these days? Why do brides wear veils? Why did steak knives use to have their points rounded off? John Nesbitt offers the reasons these traditions came into being and more in this episode of his long-running series, THE PASSING PARADE.

Actually, the reasons he offers are not always accurate, but they are reasonable, and he offers them, as always, in a pleasing manner, narrating the action seen on the screen. That's because the series originated as a radio feature, shoehorned into longer shows. It would continue as such, and appear on television, after the shorts series closed down.

Fun if you enjoy short subjects.

Passing Parade short about why certain things have become customs. Tipping hats, shaking hands, kissing and other things are explored in this somewhat entertaining film, which also contains an early appearance by Ava Gardner.

Turner Classic Movies shows this quite often so if you're interested that would be your best bet in catching this. They usually play it after one of Gardner's feature films.

Another of those informative short subjects that John Nesbitt used to do for the MGM short subject department. A few of these won Oscars in the short subject category.

This one goes through a list of things we just do and never think anything about like tipping your hat, shaking your hand, at one time these were conscious acts but now are done like reflex. It's a tradition and this shows how traditions get their start.

The short subject also has Ava Gardner seen as Lucretia Borgia while Nesbitt is narrating. What custom did she get started?
