After the success of the epic porn historical caligula 1979 film there have been many attempts to present more versions more porn versions of caligula like the 1981 film caligula and messalina and other attempts like caligula the untold story and films like caligulas' spawn and the slaves of caligula. All those films contained either soft or even hard core porn scenes while they tried to preserve a few historical events.

Joe d'amato tried to do the same in this film only he placed nero in caligulas' place and the result is exactly what u expect to see.

If u are in to those historical roman sexploitation films then this is for you.

All in all an average film which gained by now the cult status and it's also hard to find as it's out of print and u can find a bootleg dvd only in varius sites which sell the dvd at internet.

All in all the caligula 1979 epic remains the best effort of this genre followed by caligula and messalina the 1981 film as the second best. After those films comes caligula the untold story and then is this nero and poppea 1982 film while the rest of the caligula soft porn films ((caligulas' spawn and the slaves of caligula)) are boring as hell and not really worth your time.

Nerone e Poppea is a visually muddled, tonally confused entry in the sword-and-sandal exploitation category, flirting with decadence but rarely finding direction. The film seems intent on evoking grandeur, yet it mostly lands somewhere between softcore historical fantasy and low-rent stage drama, weighed down by uneven execution and baffling creative choices. What could have been an engaging, if sensationalized, dive into ancient Roman intrigue comes across more like a meandering costume pageant, stitched together with scenes that promise provocation but deliver mostly inertia.

Cinematographically, the film lacks finesse. Interiors are dimly lit and often poorly framed, with compositions that feel more accidental than designed. Occasionally, the camera lingers on ornate details-silk, gold, torches-but these flashes of texture can't distract from the flat, washed-out lighting or the awkward blocking of many scenes. Outdoor sequences fare slightly better, offering some natural depth and atmosphere, but they're scarce and underutilized. The overall tone is hazy, not in a dreamlike way, but as if shot through an uncertain lens, both literally and thematically.

The performances vary wildly. Ugo Fangareggi, as Nero, leans hard into flamboyance, portraying the emperor with a mix of erratic mood swings and theatrical flair that borders on parody. While some of his outbursts are oddly compelling, they rarely feel grounded in character. Daniela Poggi's Poppea, intended as a figure of beauty and cunning, mostly drifts through scenes with a vacant detachment. Her physical presence is emphasized, but her emotional arc is left hollow. In contrast, Bruno Minniti brings a glimmer of sincerity and conviction to his limited screen time, anchoring a few moments that briefly hint at the film's untapped dramatic potential. It's a fleeting strength in a cast often directed more toward posing than performing.

Tonally, the film struggles to settle. There are traces of satire, sensuality, and political commentary, but they clash rather than cohere. The pacing limps along, occasionally jolted by moments of forced intensity that feel disconnected from the story's flow. The film leans heavily on eroticism, yet the sensual scenes often lack chemistry or narrative purpose, making them feel more obligatory than organic. Ultimately, Nerone e Poppea never quite decides whether it's aiming for high drama or pulp spectacle, and in trying to be both, it accomplishes neither.

Caesar Neron indulges himself in any known debauchery including incest with his mother when his Empire slowly declines.Bruno Mattei's "Nerone e Poppea" isn't as outrageous as Joe D'Amato's "Caligula-The Untold Story",but still offers some delicious sleaze.There's plenty of nudity and some nicely filmed lesbian sequences to keep fans of Italian sleaze entertained.Rudy Adams is wonderfully over-the-top as a crazy Neron and Patricia Derek is one of the sexiest women ever!There's even a castration scene and some rather nasty torture sequences.The film is long out of print,but you might run into it in a very old video store.A must-see for fans of sleaze!
