The Miniseries Stephen King Considers His Favorite Is A Hidden Horror Treasure
Image
This post contains spoilers for "Storm of the Century."

If you have never heard of "Storm of the Century," or don't remember it being a part of Stephen King's vast literary oeuvre, that's because it is not a book. When he's not involved with film or television adaptations of his works, King often writes original screenplays that indulge his most experimental narrative impulses. In most cases, these projects are adaptations of his own books, but "Storm of the Century" isn't based on existing works, as King wrote it solely for television. In fact, the screenplay was sold as a mass-market paperback right before the ABC series aired in February 1999, which helped shine a spotlight on this massively overlooked miniseries helmed by Craig R. Baxley.

So, what's the series about? The people of Little Tall Island are accustomed to local storms, but seem somewhat unprepared for a powerful blizzard, which...

Stephen King at an event for The Manchurian Candidate (2004)
Producer Tom Brodek, Master of Stephen King Miniseries, Dies at 86
Stephen King at an event for The Manchurian Candidate (2004)
Thomas H. Brodek, an Emmy-nominated producer whose résumé ranged from Stephen King miniseries to Disney blockbusters, died June 15 at a hospice in Surprise, Ariz., after a battle with cancer, his family said. He was 86.

A third-generation Californian, Brodek discovered television while studying at the University of Southern California, where he helped operate campus station Kusc-tv between 1956 and 1960. He went on to oversee commercials for Young & Rubicam before co-founding Doric Productions, delivering titles such as “Honey, I Shrunk the Kids,” “The Principal,” “The Aviator” and “Transylvania 6-5000.” In 1990 he joined ABC Productions as senior vice-president of production and post-production, supervising more than half a billion dollars’ worth of movies and series for all four major U.S. networks.

Brodek’s collaboration with Stephen King defined his later career. He produced the six-hour network events “Storm of the Century,” “Rose Red,” “The Diary of Ellen Rimbauer” and “Kingdom Hospital,” earning a...

Thomas H. Brodek, Former Film Producer and ABC Executive, Dies at 86
Image
Thomas H. Brodek, a producer on the 1980s films The Aviator, starring Christopher Reeve; The Principal, starring Jim Belushi and Louis Gossett Jr.; and Transylvania 6-5000, starring Jeff Goldblum; has died. He was 86.

Brodek died June 15 of cancer at a hospice facility in Surprise, Arizona, his wife of 63 years, author and former Warner Bros. executive Lorraine Brodek, told The Hollywood Reporter.

Brodek served as a senior vp and executive producer for ABC Productions from 1990-2002, when he worked on two Stephen King miniseries, 1999’s Storm of the Century and 2002’s Rose Red; the 2003 telefilm The Diary of Ellen Rimbauer; and a 2004 series developed by the author, Kingdom Hospital.

Earlier, he was the executive in charge of production on another high-profile ABC miniseries, the 1981 adaptation of John Steinbeck’s East of Eden.

In 2009, Brodek was hired to produce the final four episodes of Showtime’s The Tudors in Ireland, and he...

‘Freaks and Geeks’ Cast: What Are They Doing in 2025?
Image
Before Euphoria had teens crying in glitter and Stranger Things brought back scrunchies, Freaks and Geeks was the ultimate throwback teen drama. Created by Paul Feig and backed by Judd Apatow, this one-season wonder gave us everything—awkward crushes, garage band dreams, and hallway drama set in the glorious chaos of the ’80s.

However, despite its popularity and Emmy win, Freaks and Geeks was canceled after 18 episodes. Struggling with ratings, the show was unfairly booted off TV. Yet, the geeks and freaks from the series managed to climb up the ladder of fame, following this 1999 dramedy. So today, let’s check out what the gang’s up to in 2025!

10. Natasha Melnick as Cindy Sanders

After watching myriad shows, we’ve finally concluded that every teen show needs that one totally-out-of-your-league crush. So, in Freaks and Geeks, Natasha Melnick played that soft-spoken cheerleader Cindy Sanders, who had poor Sam Weir stumbling...

10 Most Underrated Stephen King TV Shows And Miniseries
Image
One of the most prolific and best-selling authors in American history is Stephen King, who's written countless beloved books across a career spanning 50 years. Primarily known for his work in the horror genre, King has expanded his thematic reach to include crime, fantasy, and science fiction, sometimes under the pseudonym Richard Bachman. Many of King's works have been adapted into film and television, with adaptations in the latter in both the ongoing and limited series format. And like any other author, especially one with King's prodigious output, some adaptations are going to go under-appreciated and overlooked.

Simply put, there are a multitude of Stephen King television adaptations, with many not getting their just due during their initial release. Whether overshadowed by more prominent adaptations or relegated to more audience-neglected platforms, even King's name doesn't guarantee a show's success. Fortunately, many of these series' reputations have improved over time, with subsequent...

Hulu Is Streaming Stephen King's Most Underrated Miniseries
Image
Stephen King has penned dozens of books and hundreds of short stories, many of which have been adapted for the screen with varying degrees of success. That said, the author's work is enduringly popular, and studios and networks can't get enough of his twisted imagination. That's why ABC came calling after he wrote an original screenplay for a miniseries called "Storm of the Century," an underrated gem from 1999 that deserves more recognition. The good news, however, is that it's available to stream on Hulu -- and you really need to watch it.

If you had to judge "Storm of the Century" just by reading the summary, you'd be forgiven for thinking it's a prototypical King story; however, this one packs more of a punch than most. The six-hour miniseries takes place in Little Tall Island, a sleepy town in Maine that becomes engulfed in terror following a blizzard and the...

Why Steven Spielberg and Stephen King’s Planned ‘90s Horror Collaboration Never Happened
Image
Stephen King loves to watch. Over the years, he hasn’t shied away from giving reviews about the latest projects. But he isn’t just a fan. Apart from writing numerous best-selling novels, the popular author has served as a screenwriter on several movies and TV shows. On television, he has penned scripts for productions like The Stand and Storm of the Century. He also wrote an episode of The X-Files. On the big screen, his screenwriting work stretches as far back as the early ‘80s when he made his debut with George A. Romero's Creepshow.

Apart from writing, King has had an interest in producing his movies and shows, though he has a hit-and-miss trend in this space. After the failure of Maximum Overdrive in the ‘80s, many expected him to stick to what he knows best, but he has persisted. King’s love for cinema has been...

Stand by Me Leaves Streaming on February 1
Image
If you're a fan of the macabre, then Stephen King movies are probably right up your alley. However, this time we won't provide news about his scary films. In fact, there's nothing quite scary about Stand by Me, except that it offers a surprisingly honest look at childhood and the good and bad things that come with it. For fans of this departure from King's usual hokum, then you have to hurry and see Stand by Me before it leaves Netflix on February 1.

The coming-of-age movie will depart the catalog and will disappear for a while from the streaming-verse. Note that other titles leaving the streamer on February 1 include Snowpiercer, Zero Dark Thirty and 2021's Dune. If you haven't heard about the 1986 movie, just know that it's worth paying for a Netflix subscription even if prices are ridiculously high. Yes, it is that good.

Stand by Me is based on King's novella The Body,...

'It' Director Confirms Stephen King's Involvement in 'Welcome to Derry'
Image
Andy Muschietti, the director of the horror adaptation It (both chapters) and the terribly underrated Mama, is the showrunner of the upcoming Stephen King miniseries It: Welcome to Derry. Even though it's edgy to say that it's a Stephen King show (it's not exactly based on one of his books), per Muschietti's comments, we could be on the right track.

Muschietti, who's also working as a producer and director of four of the series' nine episodes, spoke to Radio Tu about Welcome to Derry and expanded on which stories will be told in the series. The series takes place in 1962, 27 years before the events of Muschietti's movie It, and it follows several residents of the town of Derry being terrorized by the evil entity that comes out every 27 years to feed itself.

While It: Welcome to Derry is clearly inspired by the source material and will even feature the return of Bill Skarsgård as Pennywise,...

Mike Flanagan Is Right About One Of The Most Underrated Stephen King Movies Of All Time
Image
Dozens of Stephen King's literary works have received movie and TV adaptations, but modern horror master Mike Flanagan (The Haunting of Hill House) recently highlighted an oft-overlooked adaptation that definitely deserves more attention in Christine. King has produced well over 100 novels, collections, screenplays, and other assorted works, and some have been adapted into all-time great movies, like The Shawshank Redemption or The Green Mile. Others have been complete misfires, like Silver Bullet or Firestarter. Still others have been reappraised recently and are evolving into cult classics.

Mike Flanagan recently spoke about King's most underrated adaptations, and highlighted four very specific choices, some of which make more sense than others. Flanagan's opinion on the matter certainly means something, given that he has produced some incredible King adaptations himself, including Doctor Sleep, Gerald's Game, and the upcoming Life of Chuck. Of the four choices he gave, one really stands out as...

Mike Flanagan names some of the most underrated Stephen King adaptations
Image
The career of genre filmmaker Mike Flanagan is strongly tied to the works of author Stephen King. Flanagan has directed film adaptations of the King novels Gerald’s Game and Doctor Sleep. He tried and failed to bring an adaptation of King’s Revival to the screen. His upcoming film The Life of Chuck is another King adaptation, he’s developing the author’s Dark Tower saga as a Prime Video series, and we recently heard that he’ll be turning Carrie into an eight episode Prime Video series. He knows his King – which is why Movieweb asked him to name some of the most underrated King adaptations. Flanagan gladly did, mentioning a few great ones.

When Movieweb asked which King adaptations he thinks are underrated, Flanagan answered, “You know what jumped immediately to my mind? The Night Flier with Miguel Ferrer is a really good movie that I don’t...

Stephen King's Most Underrated Movies According to Mike Flanagan
Image
Stephen King is prolific, to put it lightly. Even big fans of the horror author haven't read everything he's written, much less seen all the good movies and miniseries that have been based on his work. There are several titles that have been somewhat buried, especially the TV movies and miniseries. Dated as they may be, there is still a lot to enjoy in films and miniseries like Needful Things, The Langoliers, Graveyard Shift, and others. But if you want to find the best movies you may have missed, who better to ask than Stephen King filmmaker extraordinaire Mike Flanagan? He's directed three King adaptations and is working on a fourth, a TV series version of Carrie. When MovieWeb spoke with the charming auteur, he provided his picks for the most underrated Stephen King adaptations.

The Thursday Night NBC Plunged Itself Into Darkness
Image
“The One with the Blackout,” the seventh episode of “Friends’” inaugural season, was notable for several reasons. It first introduced viewers to both the gang’s miserly broomstick-waving neighbor Mr. Heckles and Ross’ first rival for Rachel’s affections, Italian stallion Paolo. It apparently added the term ‘friend zone’ to the English lexicon as a result. And, as its title suggests, it formed part of an ingenious marketing strategy in which three NBC sitcoms were deliberately plunged into darkness.

Celebrating its 30th anniversary this month (November 3), Blackout Thursday was the brainwave of Dan Holm, a promotional producer also responsible for the term ‘Must See TV.’ Alongside the comedy that would prove to be the network’s most successful, the programming stunt also included one of the many forgettable one-seasoners that failed to ride its coattails, the Dabney Coleman-starring “Madman of the People,” and the 12-time Emmy-winning “Mad About You.

Stephen Kings Sons of Anarchy Cameo Is by Far His Best
Image
Stephen King has had a Midas Touch since he published his first novel, Carrie, in 1974. Most of his books have not only topped the New York Times bestseller list but have also been adapted into movies and TV shows. He is now second-highest among the authors with the most adaptations, ranking only behind the legendary William Shakespeare.

Throughout his career, King has left a trail of imaginary gore and chills in his wake, earning himself the title The King of Horror. Additionally, he has experimented with genres like fantasy, crime, science fiction, and mystery, resulting in equally gripping works like The Shawshank Redemption, 11/22/63, and The Green Mile.

Apart from being an author, King has proven to be a great consumer of film and television, and as such, has made cameos in several movies and TV shows, not all of which were adapted from his work. In fact, we're here to...

Stephen King's Favorite TV Project Inspired An Acclaimed Netflix Horror Series
Image
There have been many Stephen King movies on the big screen, but if you ask the master of horror himself, he thinks TV is a better medium for his work — specifically the TV miniseries. "I think my novels are much better suited for miniseries presentations," he says in the book "Hollywood's Stephen King." There have been a handful of King miniseries over the years — before "It" became two blockbuster movies, it was a beloved (and scary) miniseries starring Tim Curry. There was also "The Tommyknockers," "The Langoliers," and of course, Tobe Hooper's "Salem's Lot." These miniseries are all adaptations of King's pre-existing work, but in 1999, King tried something different: an original miniseries he wrote from scratch.

In 1997, King finally got a chance to adapt "The Shining" his way. The author spent decades complaining about Stanley Kubrick's acclaimed adaptation of his haunted hotel novel, and then ABC came along...

Stephen King Compares His Cameos To A Legendary Director
Image
There have been Stephen King movies for almost as long as there have been Stephen King books. King's first novel "Carrie" arrived in 1974, and by 1976, a "Carrie" movie was burning up movie screens. King was still relatively obscure at the time, but as his publishing career continued, he became a household name. He also became a recognizable figure, thanks to public appearances on talk shows, TV commercials, and of course, cameos in movies. King's very first cameo appearance was in George A. Romero's "Knightriders," a movie about a ren faire where people joust on motorcycles instead of horses. In that film, King plays a character named Hoagie Man, who can be seen eating a hoagie in a rather disgusting fashion.

After that, King had a surprisingly large role in Romero's horror anthology film "Creepshow," which King wrote the screenplay for. There, he plays Jordy Verrill, a hick farmer who...

Director Osgood Perkins opened up about his next horror movie in the form of The Monkey, based on Stephen Kings 1980 short story of the same name. I Loved It”: Stephen King’s Favorite TV Show Of His Own Aired 25 Years Ago (& It's Not Based On A Book)
Image
King's favorite TV work of his is the 1999 miniseries Storm of the Century, which he specifically wrote for television. Storm of the Century is praised for its terrifying villain, unpredictable story, and isolated island setting. Despite not being based on a King novel, the miniseries is lauded for its fear-driven plot and impressive storytelling.

Stephen King has many works that have become TV shows, but his favorite is one that aired 25 years ago - and isn't based on any of his existing novels. The prolific horror author has had many of his works adapted into TV series, giving the original works plenty of room to develop over time. This includes classics like the 1990 miniseries adaptation of It, and an upcoming The Dark Tower show, based on King's series of the same name.

However, the horror icon has also been involved in works that are not directly based on his novels.

Stephen King at an event for The Manchurian Candidate (2004)
Checking Into ‘Kingdom Hospital’, Stephen King’s Short-Lived ABC Series [The Losers’ Club Podcast]
Stephen King at an event for The Manchurian Candidate (2004)
Nearly three decades ago, Stephen King stumbled upon a copy of Lars von Trier‘s Danish miniseries The Kingdom in a dusty Colorado video store. Roughly seven years later, ABC premiered Kingdom Hospital, the author’s own take on von Trier’s haunted hospital. While conceived as a miniseries, King was so excited about the project — developed alongside his Storm of the Century and Rose Red collaborators — that he was ready to start work on a second season. The series premiered strong, but ratings dwindled and ABC pulled the plug just months later.

Join The Losers’ Club as they unpack both the 13-episode series and King’s candid thoughts about the adaptation and its swift cancellation, which he detailed in a 2004 EW column. Was it ahead of its time? Are the Twin Peaks comparisons warranted? And just how much did it inspire season 2 of American Horror Story? These questions and...

From his first major picture, Oculus, to his first big hit Netflix series, The Haunting of Hill House, his work has captivated many with his well-crafted scares. Flanagan's 2021 series Midnight Mass, which might be his best yet, shows just how much he knows about the craft. Everything about the series is beautiful and haunting, from the amazing cast, and the practical effects, to the story at its center. Flanagan knows how to scare us — he learned from one of the best and even improved on it. Flanagan has cited the 1999 Stephen King TV miniseries, Storm of the Century, as an influence while making Midnight Mass, and one doesn't have to look far to see where the inspiration came from.

Stephen King And Steven Spielberg Almost Teamed Up For A Haunted House Movie
Image
Steven Spielberg and Stephen King. Two artists at the very top of their fields. King: one of the best-selling authors of all time. Spielberg: the filmmaker who invented the blockbuster. How have these guys never worked together? Well, it's not for lack of trying. In fact, these titans have come very close to teaming up on several occasions. When Spielberg was writing "Poltergeist," he wanted King's help with the script. "It didn't work out because it was before the internet and we had a communication breakdown," King told EW.

Then there was "The Talisman," the fantasy novel King co-wrote with the late Peter Straub. Before the book even hit the shelves, Spielberg scooped up the rights — but neither a film nor a TV adaptation has ever materialized. "Several times he came very close to making it, and there were a lot of discussions about that," King said. It was...

The Hunger Games Director Attached to Direct Stephen King's The Long Walk
Image
Hollywood has been trying to adapt Stephen King's novel 'The Long Walk' into a film since 1988, but it has faced numerous setbacks and changes in directors. Francis Lawrence, known for directing the Hunger Games movies, is now attached to direct The Long Walk and is very excited about it. The story of The Long Walk is set in a dystopian future and features a deadly game where teenage boys have to walk above a certain speed or risk being shot, making Lawrence a suitable choice for the film due to his experience in directing post-apocalyptic settings and working with ensemble casts.

First published in 1979 under the pseudonym Richard Bachman, Stephen King’s novel ‘The Long Walk’ has been the subject of Hollywood lore since 1988, when Night of the Living Dead director George Romero was first approached to adapt the book into a feature film. The project never came to fruition,...

Stephen King Reveals The 1 Thing That Surprised Him About His 1999 ABC Miniseries
Image
Stephen King expresses surprise at the dark content of his ABC miniseries Storm of the Century, highlighting how the show pushed the boundaries of broadcast TV. The miniseries features a villain named Andre who uses the dark secrets of the townspeople to cause chaos, creating multiple suicides and murders. The dark ending of the miniseries is reflective of King's other horror works, as the author wrote Storm of the Century for TV.

Horror author Stephen King has revealed something that surprised him about the production of his 1999 ABC miniseries Storm of the Century. The show depicts a winter storm on the fictional Little Tall Island, which brings with it a suspicious stranger named Andre Linoge. The newcomer seems to know the secrets of individuals on the island, which he uses to cause chaos. The series was a critical hit and is a well-remembered work by King.

Now, after promoting an article about the series,...

Storm of the Century is the Most Underrated Stephen King Adaptation
Image
Contrary to what you may think, the adaptations of Stephen King's literary works aren't always good. There are several of those that could use a re-imagining, and some of them aren't even worth revisiting. The master of horror and the best-selling author in history may be excellent in his craft, but that doesn't mean every work of his automatically translates into a good movie or TV show.

When you explore the world of King, you find yourself facing films like The Lawnmover Man, which is almost impossible to adapt into a great feature film because of its theme, and adaptations like Silver Bullet, whose big-screen renderings are notable shifts from their origin story. The 1999 ABC miniseries Storm of the Century falls into none of those categories — and that's a very good thing.

The three-episode miniseries tells the story of the residents of Little Tall Island, a Maine community preparing...

Inland Empire (2006) Revisited – Horror Movie Review
David Lynch
A new episode of the Revisited video series has just been released, and in this one we’re looking back at a movie that some may not consider to be a horror movie, but at the very least it is an “experimental psychological thriller” from a highly respected genre director. The director in question is David Lynch, and the movie we’re talking about today is the 2006 release Inland Empire (get it Here). To revisit Inland Empire with us, check out the video embedded above.

Written and directed by Lynch, Inland Empire tells the following story over the course of its 180 minute running time: Nikki, an actress, takes on a role in a new film, and because her husband is very jealous, her co-star Devon gets a warning not to make any romantic overtures — especially since the characters they play are having an affair. Both actors learn that the project...

The Exorcist (1973) Revisited – Horror Movie Review
Olivia O'Neill and Lidya Jewett in El Exorcista: Creyentes (2023)
A new episode of the Revisited video series went online over the weekend, and with this one we took a look back at one of the most highly regarded horror movies ever made, the 1973 classic The Exorcist (watch it Here)! To find out what we had to say about The Exorcist, check out the video embedded above.

Based on a novel by William Peter Blatty (pick up a copy Here), who also wrote the screenplay, The Exorcist was directed by William Friedkin and tells the following story: One of the most profitable horror movies ever made, this tale of an exorcism is based loosely on actual events. When young Regan starts acting odd — levitating, speaking in tongues — her worried mother seeks medical help, only to hit a dead end. A local priest, however, thinks the girl may be seized by the devil. The priest makes a request to perform an exorcism,...

‘Dark Angel’ – The Endorphin-Harvesting Dolph Lundgren Alien Movie You Should Probably Watch
Image
Not many horror films truly scare me these days. But alien horror? Even the ones substandard to most send me into a fear frenzy. That’s why I’m taking a deep dive into the sub-genre.

Welcome to Aliens Scare Me. A look into alien horror films on a case by case basis.

This month we’re probing deep into action/sci-fi territory with 1990’s Dark Angel; or depending on where you find it, I Come In Peace, starring the great Dolph Lundgren.

What It’s About

Rogue cop Jack Caine (Lundgren) has his partner killed by a gang of old white men called “The White Boys” (dead serious) who are subsequently murdered by a mysterious force using what appears to be a CD Rom disc as a weapon (still serious). While investigating, Jack and his new partner by force, Special Agent Arwood (Brian Benben), come across an gigantic alien...

Wilson (who also share story credit with Underwood), Tremors has the following synopsis: Handymen Val McKee and Earl Bassett are tired of their dull lives in the small desert town of Perfection, Nevada. But just as the two try to skip town, they happen upon a series of mysterious deaths and a concerned seismologist studying unnatural readings below the ground. With the help of an eccentric couple, the group fights for survival against giant, worm-like monsters hungry for human flesh.

Swamp Thing (1982) Revisited – Horror Movie Review
James Gunn
Just a couple days ago, DC Studios head James Gunn announced that a Swamp Thing movie will be part of the first slate of DC films he will be producing as he reboots the DC Universe. Yesterday, we heard that Logan director James Mangold is in early talks to direct the Swamp Thing movie. So today seemed like the perfect time to release a new episode in the Revisited video series that looks back at the 1982 film adaptation of Swamp Thing (watch it Here). To find out all about the version of Swamp Thing that reached theatres over forty years ago, check out the video embedded above.

The 1982 Swamp Thing was written and directed by legendary genre filmmaker Wes Craven. His film has the following synopsis: Deep in Florida’s darkest everglades, a brilliant scientist, Dr. Alec Holland, and a sexy government agent, Alice Cable, have developed a secret formula...

Stephen King Made Winter the Scariest Time of the Year
Image
When the idea for this feature was first proposed, the angle was “Stephen King stories set at Christmas.” Much to my surprise, however, and despite our best efforts, we were not able to find a story by the master that was set specifically during the holidays or that pertained to them in some meaningful way. Given the breadth of King’s prose, this absence is surprising. It also begged a new question: What, then, are his best stories set in winter? It’s perhaps telling how quickly the choices multiplied. More than a few of King’s best-known tales take place during the coldest part of the year, and a few lesser-known tales benefit greatly from having the same backdrop.

We’re not parsing whether they’re short stories, novels, TV productions, or movies—we’ll discuss the story in whatever medium (or media) it’s appeared in—and we’ve left out a couple,...

Kolchak: The Night Stalker (1974)
It’s time for a new episode of the Revisited video series, and with this one we’re looking back at a TV movie that started a franchise, 1972’s The Night Stalker ((pick up a copy Here)! A show that served as inspiration for The X-Files and received a short-lived remake series called Night Stalker in the early 2000s. To find out all about The Night Stalker, check out the video embedded above!

Directed by John Llewellyn Moxey from a teleplay by Richard Matheson, which was based on a novel by Jeff Rice, The Night Stalker has the following synopsis:

La tormenta del siglo (1999)
Stephen King’s Storm of the Century (1999) Revisited – Horror Movie Review
La tormenta del siglo (1999)
A new episode of the Revisited video series has just been released, and while all of the previous entries have been a look back at feature films, this episode does something a little different. This one is looking back at the three-part mini-series Storm of the Century (pick up a copy Here), which aired on ABC back in February of 1999. To find out all about Storm of the Century, check out the video embedded above.

The mini-series was written by Stephen King, and this wasn’t an adaptation of any of King’s previous works. He wrote this one specifically to be a TV mini-series. Directed by Craig R. Baxley, the mini-series has the following synopsis:

A dangerous blizzard hits an isolated town and brings along a mysterious stranger intent on terrorizing people for his own desires.

A 'Communication Breakdown' Cost Steven Spielberg A Poltergeist Screenplay From Stephen King
Image
"Poltergeist" is a cinematic Rorschach test. Which scene was scarier, the maggoty meat or the evil clown doll? What does the film say about the values of 1980s American suburbia? Most importantly of all, did Tobe Hooper direct the film, or did producer Steven Spielberg do it on the sly? Director Mick Garris insists it was Hooper, but "Poltergeist" camera assistant John R. Leonetti says Spielberg. Film critic Scout Tafoya claims in "Cinemaphagy," his book covering Hooper's film career, that "Poltergeist" is Hooper's movie but has some distinctly Speilbergian touches.

There is another "Poltergeist" that never quite came into being. Early in the film's production, Spielberg decided that he needed help writing the script. In search of a horror expert, he turned to Stephen King, whose works at the time were tearing up the country's bestseller charts. King was away at the time, and by the time he returned, Spielberg had moved on.

The Underrated Stephen King Miniseries That Left A Mark On Midnight Mass
Image
With two adaptations already under his belt, Mike Flanagan has made no secret of his love of Stephen King's work. Both "Gerald's Game" and "Doctor Sleep" show that he can handle King's complex characters with ease, but the Master of Horror's influence on the filmmaker doesn't stop with Flanagan's direct King adaptations.

The writer/director's Netflix series "Midnight Mass" is a story set on a small coastal island that is visited by a strange being with supernatural powers, and it's up to the town's sheriff, who works out of the community's sole grocery store, and a handful of islanders to stand up to this menace.

In "Storm of the Century," a 1999 original miniseries penned by King, a strange being with supernatural powers appears on a small, coastal island, and it's up to the town's sheriff, who works out of the community's sole grocery store, and a handful of islanders...

After chilling us to our cores with The Haunting of Hill House and shattering our hearts with the The Haunting of Bly Manor finale, Netflix has returned with another horror mystery series that's set out to do both. Directed and executive produced by Hill House creator Mike Flanagan, Midnight Mass explores the supernatural happenings of Crockett Island and its residents who may be more of a danger to each other than the ghosts lurking in the shadows. As a storm brews and dark forces convene on the island, no one is safe. Here's what we know about the seven-episode limited series so far.

What Is Midnight Mass About?

Visually reminiscent of Stephen King's Storm of the Century, the drama horror series tells the story of a small, isolated island community plagued by darkness. Filled with secrets and social turmoil, the relationships between the townspeople become more...

Stephen King Reveals His Favorite TV Adaptation Of His Work
Image
It feels like you can barely turn around these days without bumping into an adaptation of a Stephen King story, with the prolific author’s back catalogue having proven to be incredibly fertile ground for film and television projects over the last four decades. There are currently fourteen movies and six shows in development based on his novels and short stories, with The Outsider and The Stand both debuting this year.

Given the sheer volume of page-to-screen works based on the 73 year-old’s output, then, it isn’t surprising that the quality has varied wildly from undisputed classics like The Shining, The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile to the tedious Dreamcatcher and The Dark Tower, with The Stand currently receiving tepid reviews after premiering on CBS a couple of weeks ago.

King isn’t always the biggest fan of seeing his words ripped from the page and transplanted onto...

Drive-In Dust Offs: Cellar Dweller (1988)
Long live Empire Pictures; sure, they shone briefly in the ‘80s before bankruptcy and a rebirth as Full Moon, but there was some real talent and joy in a lot of those films – case in point: Cellar Dweller (1988), a straight up monster movie with no pretense beyond gore and gratuitous nudity in a tidy 78 minute package.

Take out the credits and you’re left with around 70 minutes; certainly not unusual in Band’s world, as a lot of the films he turned out were done on the cheap and very quickly. But occasionally a real talent would stop by (Stuart Gordon comes to mind) and stretch the limited resources into something worth a look or two. Enter John Carl Buechler, the late, lamented, legendary fx artist and burgeoning director (Troll) who, in pure Band style, had to film this in 10 days with very little money and a severely truncated schedule.
