- A British sitcom set in a fictional holiday camp in Essex during the summer holiday seasons of 1959 and 1960. The camp provides entertainment and activities through its staff of Yellowcoats, struggling entertainers who were hired primarily because they were available and they were desperate enough to work for meager salaries. Some of them are young rookies waiting for a lucky break, others are veteran stars whose career has declined. Some of the recurring plots include the money-making schemes and shady rackets of the entertainment host Edward "Ted" Bovis, the attempts of the maid Peggy Ollerenshaw to work as one of the entertainers, the inability of the former university professor Jeffrey Fairbrother to adapt to his new work or to socialize, and the despair of the former music hall performer William Partridge because he has been reduced to working as a puppeteer in children's puppet shows.—Dimos I
