Anthony Minghella's wife produced the film and used to watched the dailies at home each evening. Minghella would watch over her shoulder and was so impressed with Jude Law's performance he would cast him the following year as Dickie Greenleaf in "The Talented Mr Ripley" (1999)
The love poem quoted throughout movie is a love song taken from the bible - "The song of Solomon".
The film's title is also known as the "The Wisdom Of Crocodiles"; which is of the (full) quote: "It is the wisdom .. that shed tears when they would devour" of Francis Bacon in his 'Essays' / 'On Innovations' (c.17th Century.)
According to his diaries, Alan Rickman turned down the role of Inspector Healey.
