Low budget film with no pretentions, nevertheless is a nice film good performances, the story is simple but is amusing. Good for a TV film, if you're bored a saturday afternoon you can see this movie and relax.
Two teens from a conservative little town become friends to an indian boy. The townspeople aren't happy with the friendship of the teenagers, and the teens will realise what small-minded community they live in. There will be some struggles between them, but they manage to stay friends.
I thought this was a nice independent movie, and the acting of the three teenagers was pretty good. Overall a nice film about friendship.

It was very late at night when I turned this movie on. I had decided to check it out because TV told me that Kate Hudson was in it. The first scene I saw was one of the first, the baseball game where Jesse is introduced. For a minute I was pondering changing the channel, but then I noticed a very special cameo. The man announcing the base ball game was none other than Ken Kesey. I watched the rest of the movie waiting to see if he would pop up again, but he did not. It turned out that the movie was not that bad, so it worked out alright. It has an excellent message about prejudice and coming of age. Where it falls short is in the writing mostly. The acting has a few short comings as well. The directing is solid, but presents the movie in a straight forward, no frills way. This wold be a good family movie, even though there is a bit of swearing.
This has gotta be one of the very worst movies I've ever seen. I'm genuinely shocked that anyone liked it. The dialogue is laughably bad, the timing is all off, and the camera just lingers on shots for way too long after the scene should have ended. There's really practically no story, either. It's one of those movies that you shake your head at while watching because you can't believe how fricken bad it is. Getting good actors doesn't save a bad script. I really like Douglas Spain, but I wish someone would put him in something good.
This film is possible the worst adaptation of a novel since Disney did the hunchback. The props were not set for the period and the acting was some of the worst crap I have ever seen.
If a film is supposed to be set in the 1960's why not use cars and clothing and household appliances or anything from that period.
The acting was quite sub-par, which left you asking if it was a film or an after school special... I have been more impressed with Nancy McKeon's past acting abilities in "Lifetime Originals"

- TriviaThe film includes a major connection to the state of Oregon. Jason James Richter, Erin Chambers and author Robin Cody Duncan were born in Medford, Portland and St. Helens respectively. In addition, Chambers had an uncredited role in Liberen a Willy 2 (1995), shot in Astoria, that starred Richter whose character in the Free Willy trilogy shares the same name as Jesse.
