When Edgar says no to adopting a baby, wife Florence Lake, mother-in-law Dot Farley and brother-in-law Jack Rice borrow the neighbor's baby and leave him for Edgar to find. Edgar calls the police.... but you never hand anyone over to the cops, and Edgar and the tyke get along great, until the midnight feeding, when it's up to the unprepared Edgar to do everything in this funny and bright short.
Edgar gets to be a lot more charming and child-like in this short than usual in his long-running COMMON MAN series, with the highlight being the sequence in which he tries to get some milk into a baby bottle for the infant, while Miss Lake chatters away charmingly but uselessly and Miss Farley and Mr. Rice are at their usual tenor of obnoxious and unhelpful. Although the core cast would remain through the years -- although the wives would change, and Miss Farley would occasionally be replaced by Billy Franey as Edgar's father-in-law -- it was still experimenting with stories, and this one is delightful.

A Blasted Event (1934)
** (out of 4)
Another entry in RKO's "Average Guy" series has Edgar Kennedy at home alone when his wife (Florence Lake) decides to play a joke on him. She uses the neighbors baby and puts it on their doorstep with a note making it seem like its mother has given it away. Edgar begins to take care of the baby and the wife hopes that this will lead to them adopting one of their own.
A BLASTED EVENT isn't a good movie but it's certainly much better than several films in the series that I've seen. I think the best moments are early on when we see Kennedy and the baby carrying on by playing in the floor and other things. The film has a few cute moments but these are eventually misplaced when the family gets involved. Lake is just annoying with her fast talking and nagging. Jack Rice replaced William Eugene in the role of the brother-in-law and it's certainly less annoying but he still doesn't add much. The second half of the film is quite boring as there are very few laughs.

¿Sabías que…?
- TriviaIt is surprising that baby bottle materializes for Edgar. Although it is not shown, it can be theorized that the bottle was in the basket that the baby was left in.
- ErroresAfter the baby spills the bourbon over himself, and Edgar gives him a bath, a clean dry diaper appears on the infant. There is no explanation as to where the other diaper came from.
