Kevin Smith Says He Still Wants to Make More Episodes of the ‘Clerks’ Cartoon
Image
While only six episodes were ever made and just two aired before ABC canceled the show, Kevin Smith’s Clerks: The Animated Series still has a cult audience, particularly among those who came of age watching Smith’s View Askew movies like Clerks, Mallrats and Dogma. As May 31st marks the 25th anniversary of the short-lived cartoon’s debut, Smith shared his thoughts with me on a potential Clerks cartoon reboot last year aboard the first-ever Cruise Askew Kevin Smith Fan Cruise.

Fans will be happy to know that Smith would reboot the series “in a heartbeat,” and added that it’s something he talks about all the time. However, he went on to clarify the difference between a new cartoon based on Clerks and a reboot of Clerks: The Animated Series. “There’s a very narrow path by which that version of the Clerks cartoon can come back,” he said.

Say, would you like a chocolate covered pretzel? You might be able to get that and more, as Mallrats star Jason Lee has teased that there will be celebratory events marking the 30th anniversary of the divisive 1995 comedy. Snootchie Bootchies!

Jason Lee – who played Hartford Whalers supporter and slacker extraordinaire Brodie Bruce in Mallrats – recently took to social media to share both a still from the movie and hint that there might be some goodies in store for fans. As he wrote, “2025, a year of some cool anniversaries and happenings. 30 years ago, @thatkevinsmith’s Mallrats premiered. My first film and an incredibly memorable, life-changing experience. Look forward to some Mallrats anniversary events later this year. More to come …Thank you, Kevin!”

Kevin Smith’s Re-Released ‘Dogma’ Acquired By Goodfellas For International Sales – Cannes Market
Image
Exclusive: Goodfellas is getting behind Kevin Smith’s mission to theatrically re-release his controversial 1999 religious satire Dogma, starring Ben Affleck and Matt Damon as fallen angels, after a tumultuous launch first time round.

The maverick Paris-based sales company has acquired international rights to the remastered 4K edition of the film, which is screening in the Cannes Film Festival’s Cannes Classics sidebar this year.

The Cannes splash follows Smith’s announcement last October that he had gotten the rights back to the movie which had been out of his hands since the initial release. This acquisition was made by Triple Media Film in partnership with View Askew Productions.

Under the care of Triple Media Film, the film is fully remastered in 4K, and was supervised by Oscar-nominated director of photography Robert Yeoman, who was the cinematographer on Dogma, ahead of going to work on multiple films with Wes Anderson including The Grand Budapest Hotel.

‘The Accountant 2’ Has Already Grossed Over Four Times as Much as Ben Affleck’s Kevin Smith Cult Classic
Image
While it's true that Ben Affleck hasn't starred in a bona fide box office hit in nearly a decade, he's still firmly a member of the Hollywood A-list. His latest film, The Accountant 2, is having a solid theatrical run, although it could be argued that it'll actually find its audience when it lands on streaming. Distributed domestically by Amazon MGM Studios, The Accountant 2 is a sequel to the Affleck-led 2016 film The Accountant, which was distributed by Warner Bros. The first movie has developed quite a cult following on home video in the years since its release, which no doubt inspired a sequel to be green-lit. The Accountant 2 hasn't recovered its reported budget yet, but it has already overtaken several of Affleck's past films.

Most recently, it overtook the largely forgotten crime movie Runner Runner, which concluded its run with under $65 million worldwide, and less than $20 million domestically.

How Kevin Smith Hilariously Failed To Give Alan Rickman A Line Reading In Dogma
Image
When Kevin Smith shot "Clerks" for $27,575, he'd received a small amount of film school training but was a babe in the woods when it came to the crucial aspect of directing actors. It shows in the movie, which is so stiffly performed that I've never been able to connect to it. The screenplay is undeniably hilarious and wise in the ways of the workaday convenience store world, but Smith's actors seem so oddly strangled. It's not the kind of acting you get in a poorly rehearsed community theater production where you can see the actors struggling to remember their lines; it's more like you're watching people who've been unnaturally directed. Their performances are really those of their director, not their own.

The off performances in "Clerks" and "Mallrats" began to make sense years later when I heard that Smith had a penchant for committing the cardinal sin of directing. Be it theater,...

“He’s got the eyes of a killer”: Kevin Smith Wanted Ben Affleck for His Canceled Superman Movie But WB’s Choice Was Even Worse
Image
Kevin Smith is a lifelong comic book fan and received arguably the biggest opportunity of his career when he was hired to write a Superman movie in 1996. Smith’s unmade script was initially written with actor Ben Affleck in mind for the role of Clark Kent / Superman, who eventually played Batman in the Dceu.

While Affleck might sound like an odd choice for the role, the actor wasn’t Warner Bros.’ first choice for the titular superhero. Instead, the producer wanted another talented actor who rose to prominence during the 1990s for the role. Here is what Smith had to say about the first choice for his unmade Superman movie.

WB wanted Sean Penn for Kevin Smith’s Superman movie

In 1996, Kevin Smith was hired by producer Jon Peters to write a Superman movie. Smith’s take on the iconic DC Comics character was based on the Death of Superman...

Tori Spelling rails against Academy for snubbing Shannen Doherty in In Memoriam segment
Image
As with every year, the Academy Awards’ In Memoriam segment left a lot of notable people out of the tribute. Look, it’s bound to happen – there’s only so much time allotted and by and large the video package has to match with the length of the music. But when a friend or co-star is dissed, you better believe they’re going to leap to the defense. Enter Tori Spelling, who can’t believe that the Oscars left off her Beverly Hills 90210 co-star Shannen Doherty.

Tori Spelling – who played Donna Martint to Shannen Doherty’s Brenda Walsh – recently spoke out against the Academy’s decision to leave out her late friend, who died last July after a long battle with cancer. While Doherty was no doubt better known for her TV work with shows like 90210 and Charmed, we can’t ignore movies like Heathers, Mallrats and some select others.

But The Hollywood Reporter reports that Smith has finally regained the rights to his film, and it’s returning to theaters on June 5. Prior to that, Smith will appear at special Dogma screenings all across the country, kicking off April 20 at the Grove in Los Angeles.

Kevin Smith’s ‘Dogma’ Returning to Theaters in June
Image
The 25th anniversary theatrical release of Kevin Smith’s religious satire Dogma, which starred Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, has been set for June 5.

AMC Theatres and Iconic Events Releasing plan a national tour in 25 cities for the limited release after Smith regained the rights to Dogma from one-time owner and producer Harvey Weinstein. Smith, a writer, director and Silent Bob actor, did multiple films under Weinstein’s Miramax banner, including both Clerks films, Mall Rats, Chasing Amy and Dogma.

Dogma, which was first released in 1999, follows Affleck and Damon as fallen angels who discover a loophole in Catholic doctrine that could allow a return to Heaven. But they face unlikely heroes, including a faith-struggling woman (Linda Fiorentino), the erased 13th Apostle (Chris Rock), Jay (Jason Mewes) and Silent Bob (Kevin Smith) to prevent the apocalypse.

Smith will kick off the 25th anniversary theatrical tour for his subversive take on...

Girl You Know It’s True (2023) is a film that tells the story of dancers Rob Pilatus and Fab Morvan, who gained fame in the late 80s as the pop duo Milli Vanilli. Despite their success, the duo never actually sang on their songs or debut album.

America’s Trade War Just Killed Kevin Smith’s New Movie

The Trump administration’s decision to hit its closest trading partners with steep tariffs has already caused the stock market to tank, will likely lead to an increase in prices for a wide assortment of products in the near future, and now it’s having a major impact on America’s supply of dick jokes and Star Wars references.

On his podcast Fat Man Beyond, Kevin Smith recently announced that he was planning to direct a new movie in April and May “unless everything goes foul in the next few weeks.” Unfortunately, it seems that things, indeed, have gone foul.

On a more recent episode, Smith revealed that “the movie we have been working on and speeding toward just hit a massive wall,” and now it “looks like it’s going to fall apart.” And the reasons for this are entirely financial and political. “This one was out of my...

Kevin Smith’s ‘Archie’ Crossover Has the Opportunity to Payoff a 28-Year-Old Joke
Image
Kevin Smith’s Jay and Silent Bob characters are famous for popping up in movies like Clerks, Mallrats and Dogma. But the stoner duo also exist within the fictional worlds of Star Wars, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and the Scream franchise, as evidenced by the most baffling moment from Scream 3.

But now Jay and Bob are set to crossover with a most unexpected pop-culture property: Archie. Per The Hollywood Reporter, an upcoming “double-sized” comic book titled Kevin Smith Presents: Archie Meets Jay & Silent Bob will find the Riverdale gang crossing paths with the residents of the View Askewniverse — and presumably learning some new four-letter words in the process.

Weirder still, the book takes place after the events of Clerks III, in which (spoiler) protagonist Dante Hicks dies of a heart attack. According to Smith, who penned the comic, “Archie plays a role in the healing (process),” adding, “not only...

'That's Messed Up': Shannen Doherty's Absence From Oscars' In Memoriam Slammed by 90210 Co-Star
Image
Actress Shannen Doherty, who appeared in numerous films and TV shows like Heathers, Mallrats, Beverly Hills 90201 and Charmed, was notably absent from the Academy Awards’ In Memoriam tribute at the March 2 ceremony. Doherty died in July 2024 at the age of 53. She had been living with breast cancer since 2015.

Per TMZ, Jennie Garth, who played Kelly Taylor on the teen drama 90210 from 1990 to 2000, voiced her opinion on the Oscars’ omission of Doherty from the In Memoriam segment. When asked about Doherty being missing from the tribute, Garth said, “Yeah, that’s messed up.”

When Garth was asked whether the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences should issue an apology for excluding Doherty, who played Brenda Walsh on 90210 from 1990 to 1994, she said “Maybe.”

The Oscars ‘Messed Up’ by Excluding Shannen Doherty From In Memoriam, Says ‘Beverly Hills, 90210’ Co-Star Jennie Garth
Image
The 2025 Oscars ignited controversy for leaving out actors such as Michelle Trachtenberg, Tony Todd and Olivia Hussey. “Beverly Hills, 90210” star Shannen Doherty was also omitted, which her co-star Jennie Garth called “messed up” when asked by TMZ to give her thoughts on the snub (via People). Garth added that “maybe” the Academy should apologize to Doherty’s family for the exclusion.

Garth and Doherty became teen icons together as stars of “Beverly Hills, 90210.” They were both series regulars for four seasons. Doherty exited the series before Season 5. Garth continued for all 10 seasons. They later reunited as their characters, Kelly Taylor and Brenda Walsh, for appearances on The CW’s “90210” reboot.

Michelle Trachtenberg Among Oscars In Memoriam Snubs: Why?
Image
Reading Time: 4 minutes

Michelle Trachtenberg tragically passed away last week.

Many of her fans and former costars are still in shock. This was so unexpected.

The 2025 Oscars have come and gone with relatively few surprises in the mix.

But this year’s In Memoriam segment of the Oscars snubbed Trachtenberg. And she was not the only conspicuous exclusion.

Michelle Trachtenberg attends the 28th Annual Elton John AIDS Foundation Academy Awards Viewing Party sponsored by IMDb, Neuro Drinks and Walmart on February 09, 2020. (Photo Credit: Jemal Countess/Getty Images) Why did Michelle Trachtenberg not appear in the Oscars ‘In Memoriam’ tribute?

On Sunday, March 3, the 2025 Oscars telecast included the familiar tribute to deceased stars — and a few others from within the film industry — who have died over the past year.

The segment used the “Lacrimosa” section from Mozart’s “Requiem in D Minor,” which is often a tasteful decision.

The 1989 Oscars Had a Catastrophe Bigger Than the Will Smith Slap
Image
Another year, another blah Oscars program, complete with all the trappings, clichés, and safe musical numbers. Most of which you'll be ignoring as you scroll on your phone. About the only thing that has made the show watchable in the last three decades is backstage blunders and that one time a WWE fight broke out. We didn't know how good we had it. Back in the late '80s, the Oscar producers were aware of precisely this problem. In what was a lavish, high-concept gamble, they sought to inject new ideas into a stale format.

But they were wise to play it safe all those decades prior. At the 61st Academy Awards ceremony, the Oscar planners found out that lesson the hard way. For those wondering why the Oscars are excruciatingly dull, one watershed moment in 1989 is to blame. 36 years later, the taint remains, the event compared to a “gay...

Death Match: The Annual Drama Over the Oscars In Memoriam Segment
Image
The Oscars’ annual In Memoriam segment is a cathartic palate cleanser, a chance to take a break from all those speeches and prize festivities.

And a source of intrigue, suspense, shock and outrage.

“It’s an Oscar ritual that always has a rustle of drama beneath the surface,” says Michael Schulman, an Academy Awards expert and author of the 2023 book Oscar Wars. “No matter what happens, there will be 10 headlines about who was snubbed posthumously, and there’s nothing that can be done about it.” (Anne Heche’s friends could tell you something about that.)

That ritual has taken a tragically relevant turn this year with the unexpected deaths of actors Gene Hackman and Michelle Trachtenberg just days before the show. Trachtenberg is a question mark for the tribute while Hackman will certainly be included, but in what form has Oscars producers scrambling ahead of the big event.

If all...

Ben Affleck Still Holds an Impressive Oscars Record
Image
With the much-anticipated Oscars night quickly approaching, it's only natural to look back on some significant winners from the past. Since the esteemed ceremony's inception in 1929, plenty of filmmakers, actors, and movies have set several long-standing records. The most awards won by a single film is a three-way tie between Ben-Hur, Titanic, and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King — each earning a remarkable 11 wins. Katharine Hepburn set the record for Best Actress with four Oscars, Parasite was the first non-English film to win Best Picture, and cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki has taken home three consecutive awards for his work in Gravity, Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance), and The Revenant.

While these artists and their films are undoubtedly award-worthy, there are some winners audiences may not realize have maintained their records for decades. One of those Oscar-recipients is Batman v. Superman actor Ben Affleck. In 1997, alongside co-writer and actor Matt Damon,...

Kevin Smith And Jason Mewes Are Swinging Through The First State This Weekend And You Should Too

Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes are on the road once again. The two best friends have worked in movies and television shows for decades. Smith and Mewes, better known as their fictional stoner selves, Jay and Silent Bob, are the total opposite in real life.

For one thing, writer/director Kevin Smith, who portrays Silent Bob, is silent. When Smith is not behind the camera, he usually hosts one of his many podcasts or hits the road, telling stories and giving inspirational talks on filmmaking and following your dreams.

Jason Mewes, who has portrayed Jay the loudmouth Jay, is an accomplished actor, director, and father. His directorial debut movie Madness in the Method was good. I’m looking forward to seeing him behind the camera the next time. And if he ever needs any advice, he can ask one of his best friends.

Kevin Smith has always been an inspirational person to me.

What Happened To The Cast Of My Name Is Earl?
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

"My Name Is Earl" is one of those sitcoms that remains beloved to a select group of fans but never really caught on in the zeitgeist in a way like "The Office" or "30 Rock" did. It had a great, heartwarming premise of the titular Earl (Jason Lee) wanting to make amends to all the people he's wronged in his troublemaking life. Earl typically hung around an eclectic group of characters to help (or hinder) him along his journey, and there was the potential for the show to make some big waves had it been allowed to continue.

Sadly, "My Name Is Earl" was canceled after four seasons due to negotiation issues between the network and the studio. It was an anticlimactic development, especially seeing as season 4 ended on a cliffhanger with the revelation that Darnell (Eddie Steeples) wasn't the father to Earl Jr.

"We Just Lost Her": Kevin Smith on Hearing Ellen DeGeneres Walked Out of Chasing Amy

Writer/producer/director/actor Kevin Smith is behind the cult classic movies like Clerks, Dogma, Mallrats, and Chasing Amy, an LGBTQ+ film. Smith, in the documentary Chasing Chasing Amy, revealed that one famous talk show host walked out of a screening of Chasing Amy, per People.

“The biggest blowback, God’s truth, that I heard, felt, and was told about was when they told me that Ellen (DeGeneres) and (then-partner) Anne Heche went to see Chasing Amy, and it was reported that they walked out in the first half hour,” Smith revealed in the Sav Rodgers documentary. DeGeneres came out as a lesbian the same year Chasing Amy was released.

“And us being like, ‘Well, that’s the most famous lesbian in the world. We just lost her. That means we’re never getting on The Ellen Show,'” Smith said. People reports that representatives for DeGeneres did not immediately return requests for comment.

Stan Lee Got Roped Into A Hilarious Disney Cameo Years Before The Studio Bought Marvel
Image
Before the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Stan Lee was known as a Marvel Comics writer and editorial director. He was instrumental in creating some of the company's most prominent characters and oversaw the entire comic book universe's direction. Lee went from the voice of Marvel to its cameo king over the course of his illustrious career, and even fans who weren't familiar with him before soon got to know the guy, thanks to Lee's frequent MCU appearances. However, he was stealthily starting his cameo career well before the MCU, and unbeknownst to many, his résumé includes a truly offbeat appearance in Disney's "The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement."

In this 2004 romantic comedy that depicts the further adventures of Princess of Genovia Mia Thermopolis (Anne Hathaway), Lee has a brief but fun turn as a foreign wedding guest who does his best to greet Queen Clarisse (Julie Andrews) with language skills that,...

Every Jay & Silent Bob Movie In Chronological Order
Image
Jay and Silent Bob movies have seen the iconic stoner duo playing supporting characters as well as leading their own movies, and despite the madcap absurdism, they do have something of a continuity and chronological order. Writer/director Kevin Smith became an indie sensation thanks to his micro-budget debut Clerks in 1994. That was also the movie that introduced the world to Jay, a foul-mouthed, obnoxious, weed-loving punk, and his mostly mute friend Silent Bob. The popularity of these characters would lead to them appearing in several other movies that followed.

Long before the MCU, Smith created his own cinematic universe with the View Askewniverse, with Jay and Silent Bob as the common thread through all the movies. The characters have appeared in cartoon series and even shows and movies outside of Smith's own cinematic universe, but the Jay and Silent Bob movies of the View Askewniverse show the characters' wild...

10 Best Movies Like Clerks 3
Image
Movies like Clerks III deliver raunchy humor with heart. With Clerks III, Kevin Smith returned to the franchise that he started his career with, delivering yet another chapter in the story of Dante Hicks and Randal Graves, the clerks who haven't really done much with their lives since the first movie, where they worked in a convenience store and video store in New Jersey. The third movie follows Randall and Dante, who, faced with their own mortality, decide to make a movie based on their lives at the Quick Stop.

The first Clerks movie was one of the films that helped set the stage for the rise of independent filmmaking in the 1990s. However, the second movie was more in line with something like Mallrats, a teenage R-rated comedy that predated American Pie. While Clerks II received the worst critical acclaim of the franchise trilogy, Clerks III returned with the raunchy R-rated humor,...

Image
“Dogma 2” needs Matt and Ben to get made. Fortunately, Kevin Smith has leverage over them.

During an appearance at the Vulture Festival over the weekend (via Deadline) celebrating the 25th anniversary of Smith’s cult favorite fantasy comedy “Dogma,” the writer-director revealed that he’s working on a sequel to the film, which remains one of his most successful, critically and commercially.

“Some people will be like, ‘Don’t f—ing touch it. You’ll ruin it,’” Smith said at the event. “And I’m here to tell you: I will. I’m f—ing tickled. I found a way in.”

Smith said he is confident that Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, who starred as fallen angels Bartleby and Loki in the original film, will return for the sequel because they owe him for helping their breakthrough film “Good Will Hunting” get made and then forgetting to thank him when...

Kevin Smith Reveals ‘Dogma 2’ Is in the Works, Ben Affleck and Matt Damon May Return
Image
Kevin Smith is working on a sequel to Dogma 25 years after its original release, and he expects Ben Affleck and Matt Damon to make at least cameo appearances.

During his “Dogma Confessional” at Vulture Festival, Smith shared his excitement about the project, joking about potential backlash:

Some people will say, ‘Don’t mess with it—you’ll ruin it.’ And I probably will. But I’m thrilled because I’ve found a way to make it happen.”

Smith is confident that Affleck and Damon will return as fallen angels Bartleby and Loki. He humorously added that after helping them with Good Will Hunting in 1997, they owe him.

The panel marked Dogma’s 25th anniversary, reflecting on the original film’s story about two angels trying to find a loophole to get back into heaven. The 1999 movie starred Linda Fiorentino, Salma Hayek, Alan Rickman, Chris Rock, Jason Lee, and Alanis Morissette,...

Kevin Smith Says ‘Dogma 2’ Is In Works With Ben Affleck & Matt Damon Potentially Returning
Image
After 25 years, Kevin Smith is reconnecting with the man upstairs for the unholiest of sequels.

During his Dogma Confessional on Sunday at Vulture Festival, the View Askewniverse creator revealed that he’s working on a sequel to the 1999 film, and he expects Ben Affleck and Matt Damon to return for cameos at least.

“Some people will be like, ‘Don’t f—ing touch it. You’ll ruin it,'” said Smith. “And I’m here to tell you: I will. I’m f—ing tickled. I found a way in.”

He sounded confident that Affleck and Damon would reprise their roles as fallen angels Bartleby and Loki. After Smith helped save the pair’s 1997 film Good Will Hunting, without so much as a thank you in their Golden Globes and Oscars speeches, they owe him.

“I have been able to hold that over both their heads for 25 f—ing years,...

The Four Best Ben Affleck Movies On Rotten Tomatoes Have One Thing In Common
Image
Film audiences may have first recognized Ben Affleck for his appearance in the 1992 film "School Ties," where he played the main sidekick of the film's central bully. In 1993, Affleck was already behind the camera as well, having made a rather notorious 16-minute short film called "I Killed My Lesbian Wife, Hung Her on a Meat Hook, and Now I Have a Three-Picture Deal at Disney." Affleck played a boorish womanizer named Shannon in Kevin Smith's 1995 comedy "Mallrats," and he teamed with Smith again in 1997 to make the stirring queer romantic drama "Chasing Amy." At the end of 1997, Affleck and his friend Matt Damon became awards darlings thanks to Gun Van Sant's "Good Will Hunting" which they both wrote and starred in.

Affleck has remained a superstar ever since, having appeared in terse studio dramas, mainstream romances, and numerous action films. He played the superheroes Daredevil and Batman and continued to work with Kevin Smith.

Exclusive Interview: Kevin Smith on The 4:30 Movie, Critical Reactions, MooseJaws & more!
Image
Nerdly’s interviewer extraordinaire fills a bucket list dream by sitting down and chatting with one of his all-time favourite directors Kevin Smith about his new flick The 4:30 Movie – a love letter to the glory days of the cinema.

Kevin Smith is an American director, producer, writer, and actor. He came to prominence with the low-budget comedy buddy film Clerks (1994), which he wrote, directed, co-produced, and acted in as the character Silent Bob of stoner duo Jay and Silent Bob, characters who also appeared in Smith’s later films Mallrats (1995), Chasing Amy (1997), Dogma (1999), Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (2001), Clerks II (2006), Jay and Silent Bob Reboot (2019), and Clerks III (2022) which are set primarily in his home state of New Jersey. While not strictly sequential, the films have crossover plot elements, character references, and a shared canon known as the “View Askewniverse”, named after Smith’s production company View Askew Productions,...

Kevin Smith Reveals He's Writing a Take On Rosemary's Baby
Image
While Kevin Smith might be known for View Askewniverse classics such as Clerks, Mallrats, and Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, hes also been known to dabble in horror from time to time. 2011s Red State was his first foray into the genre, and while that one was a straight-up thrill ride, Tusk and Yoga Hosers crossed the line into horror-comedy territory. From the sound of it, Smith is ready to give things another try based on comments he made on a recent episode of his Fat Man Beyond podcast.

Lasting a whopping 4 hours and 30 minutes which is apropos considering the episode is celebrating the digital release of Smith's latest flick, The 4:30 Movie the podcast touched on a number of topics, including films that Smith has been enjoying as of late. As a longtime fan of Rosemarys Baby, he mentioned the prequel which is now streaming on Paramount+, Apartment 7A,...

This Queer Filmmaker Wants to Figure Out Just How ‘Problematic’ ‘Chasing Amy’ Is
Image
In the spring of 1997, Chasing Amy hit theaters, serving as a comeback for writer-director Kevin Smith. Earlier in the decade, the New Jersey filmmaker had launched onto the scene with Clerks, a low-budget comedy about some foul-mouthed buddies who worked at a convenience store, earning rave reviews and announcing Smith as a promising new indie talent. But he tarnished that reputation with his follow-up, Mallrats, which was a commercial bomb and critically derided. It’s no exaggeration to say that Smith’s career was hanging in the balance when he released Chasing Amy, a bittersweet love story about a comic-book artist, Holden (Ben Affleck), who falls in love with a fellow artist, Alyssa (Joey Lauren Adams). They seem to click, but there’s a problem: She’s gay, thinking of him only as a friend. But the more time they spend together, the more she starts to develop romantic feelings for him.

A Kevin Smith Movie Saved Sav Rodgers’ Life. In ‘Chasing Chasing Amy,’ He Reckons with Its Complicated Legacy
Image
27 years after its initial release, Kevin Smith’s “Chasing Amy” remains a Rorschach test for questions of representation, authorship, and identity in film.

The 1997 film, which served as a comeback for Smith after his studio flop “Mallrats” threatened to derail the indie wunderkind status that he built with “Clerks,” is a distinct product of its time that offers a Gordian knot of messy questions about sexuality filtered through Smith’s distinctly male gaze. Ben Affleck stars as Holden McNeil, a New Jersey comic book writer who falls in love with Alyssa (Joey Lauren Adams in a career-defining performance), a pansexual woman who primarily identifies with the lesbian community. But their whirlwind romance can’t overcome his insecurities over her promiscuous past and the blatant homophobia of his writing partner Banky (Jason Lee), who lashes out at the relationship as a means of dealing with his own repressed homosexuality.

But while...

This Easter Egg Connects 'Anora' to a Previous Sean Baker Film
Image
Before it was commonplace in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the idea of a shared universe across movies was a delight for audiences. It was exciting that the characters in Chasing Amy, Clerks, and Mallrats all seemed to know each other, in part through Jay and Silent Bob. Michael Keaton reprising his role as Ray Nicolette from Jackie Brown in Stephen Soderbergh's Out of Sight was a fun surprise for people who read the Elmore Leonard novels which inspired the two movies. Quentin Tarantino was especially obsessed with this idea, with characters sharing connections across movies like Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs, but even his faux brand of Red Apple cigarettes being advertised by Rick Dalton (Leonardo DiCaprio) in Once Upon a Time... 30 Years After Becoming an Instant Classic, This Kevin Smith Comedy Remains Timeless
Image
The arrival of the 30th anniversary of Clerks would likely be more shocking had writer and director Kevin Smith not used this film as a springboard for his own cinematic universe, the View Askewniverse. While the legacy of this movie is important context for any modern review, it's also important to remember it as an independent filmmaker's standalone statement during a time of cinematic change. Clerks is equal parts a timeless ode to "bad" jobs and a time capsule of life in the '90s that simply can't be replicated today.

One has to wonder how artists defined by a single role or film feel about their immortal legacy. From the likes of Star Trek's William Shatner and Captain Kirk to any actor to don Batman's cowl in the past or future, it's a gift and a curse. They are immortalized for that role, but it comes to the...

Marvel's Stan Lee Gave Kevin Smith One Condition To Appear In Mallrats
Image
Real-life comic book magnate Stan Lee, much like fictional newspaper magnate Charles Foster Kane, is a jigsaw puzzle who was many things to many different people, depending on the piece of the puzzle they had. For non-comic book reading folks, he was that funny old guy who kept popping up in Marvel movies and had, apparently, even written a few comics himself. For comic aficionados, on the other hand, he was an undeniably important figure in the history of the medium, but also one who had excelled at mythologizing his personal contributions to Marvel Comics at the expense of others.

Lee was certainly an expert in the art of building an individual brand, which, in that respect, makes Kevin Smith his heir apparent. In point of fact, the filmmaker, actor, comic book writer, podcaster, and surprise transmasculine style icon is a lot like Lee in that he's arguably as famous...

Kevin Smith's Controversial, Out-of-Print Comedy Set for Big Comeback 25 Years Later
Image
Excellent news has been revealed for fans of Kevin Smith's Dogma. 25 years after the film's release in 1999, Dogma will finally be made available for streaming along with making a return to theaters and physical media.

Per a recent interview with Smith for The Hashtag Show, it's been confirmed by the filmmaker that the rights to Dogma have officially been acquired. Smith has previously explained that the reason the film wasn't streaming or getting new releases on physical media was because then-owner Harvey Weinstein had been holding the rights "hostage." Smith shared how a new, unnamed company has recently taken control of the rights, and he's already making plans to take Dogma on tour for a theatrical rerelease. Unfortunately, fans are going to have to wait a little bit longer to see it, as Smith predicts that it won't happen until next year.

The Reason Deadpool & Wolverine Succeeded and Joker 2 Failed Is Painfully Obvious

Quick Links As an Homage to Martin Scorsese, Joker Was a Fluke Success Deadpool & Wolverine Embraced Everything About Comics for R-Rated Excellence Folie Deux Goes Even Further to Distance Itself from Joker's Roots How Use of Music Fits Into Deadpool & Wolverine and Joker 2

The following contains light spoilers from Joker: Folie Deux currently in theaters.

The hotly anticipated musical follow-up to Todd Phillips's billion-dollar sensation, Joker: Folie Deux, failed to live up to its predecessor. In the same year, Deadpool & Wolverine also took its place in the record books as the highest-grossing R-rated film. For better or worse, Wolverine & Deadpool succeeds where Joker 2 fails because of how each movie accepts that they're part of comic book franchises.

In Hollywood, money talks, thus it almost makes sense that the Merc with a Mouth came out on top against the Clown Prince of Crime. Negative reaction from fans and...

Kevin Smith Bringing ‘Dogma’ Back To Theaters, Home Release
Image
As the controversial Kevin Smith movie celebrates its 25th anniversary, Dogma is getting a re-release.

The View Askewniverse director revealed that his 1999 religious satire is returning to theaters and getting a new home release after another company purchased the distribution rights from Miramax.

“The movie’s been bought away from the guy that had it for years and whatnot,” he said on That Hashtag Show. “The company that bought it, we met with them a couple months ago. They were like, ‘Would you be interested in re-releasing it and touring it like you do with your movies?’ I said, ‘100 percent, are you kidding me? Touring a movie that I know people like, and it’s sentimental and nostalgic? We’ll clean up.'”

Smith continued, “Right now, 2024 is our 25th anniversary, this year. November is when we came out. So, I think 2025 it looks like is when the movement’s going to happen there.

Original I Know What You Did Last Summer Star Shuts Down Return in Legacy Sequel
Image
I Know What You Did Last Summer alum Sarah Michelle Gellar is squashing rumors that she will appear in the sequel and she has a good reason. I am dead, the Buffy the Vampire Slayer actress said, per Deadline. Gellars character, beauty queen Helen Shivers, faced a violent death in the 1997 teen-horror-slasher movie.

Gellar, however, will be tangentially connected to the I Know What You Did Last Summer sequel via her husband, Freddie Prinze Jr. who is coming back for the sequel as Roy Bronson, the character he played in the original. In that film, the story follows four friends, played by Prinze Jr., Gellar, Jennifer Love Hewitt and Ryan Phillippe, who are being stalked by a man wielding a hook. The movie was loosely based on a 1973 novel of the same name by Lois Duncan.

Sarah Michelle Gellar Would Love To Honor Shannen Doherty In Mallrats Sequel
Image
Director Kevin Smith has been wanting to bring a Mallratssequel to the big screen for a while now, but a key figure from the first film is, tragically, no longer with us after the passing of Shannen Doherty following a brave battle with cancer. Despite her passing, Smith has figured out a great way to honor the late actress, and it involves having her best friend, and fellow actress, Sarah Michelle Gellar, stepping into the role the 90210 actress originated, something Gellar is more than happy to do.

Following Smith speaking with The Hollywood Reporter about wanting Gellar to step in for her best friend, the trade posted the story on their Instagram page and the Buffy the Vampire Slayer actress commented on the post by saying, "Here for this idea!!", indicating that she's more than willing to step into the role as a tribute to Doherty. The late Carrie Fisher had what some may think was an odd request for how she wanted to be compensated for her cameo in Kevin Smiths 2001 movie, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. Per Screen Rant, Smith said the actress, who died in 2016, didnt ask for a crazy fee, or even the actors salary, but she just wanted enough compensation for a pair of antique beaver chairs shed been wanting.

Fisher played a nun who gives the titular characters a car ride in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. The films title references The Empire Strikes Back, in which Fisher played the iconic Princess Leia.

Filmmaker Kevin Smith has recently been hinting that a sequel to his 1995 movie Mallrats isnt completely out of the question.
