The dojo set was constructed in a space formerly occupied by a nightclub. In the manager's office, converted into the on-site production office, Polaroids of beaten bar patrons were tacked on the wall next to the mounted chains used to hold them.
Shooting of the opening party scene was shut down when neighbors complained about the lights. The production's permits for shooting in Phoenix did not cover the town of Paradise Valley, where the house was located.
The film was shot at Paradise Valley High School when the school was closed because of freeway construction interference. Another school was built nearby for the students who attended Paradise Valley High School. The school ended up reopening and the other school was named North Canyon.
The working title for this film during production was "Full Contact".
Billy's retro blue and white sneakers are the Reebok D time pump. They were a popular, and a signature item for NBA player Dee Brown, when the film was released.
