Gabourey Sidibe in Precious (2009)
Filmmaker tells Austin audience about his difficult childhood and how Donald Trump has improved his writing.

Lee Daniels said he doesn’t understand the #OscarsSoWhite controversy in a keynote speech at SXSW on Sunday in which his Precious and Empire star Gabourey Sidibe made a surprise appearance.

Difficult childhood

Daniels began by recounting the much-publicised story of his difficult youth.

He grew up in the projects in southwest Philadelphia where he witnessed friends getting shot, was raised in a family that dealt drugs to earn a living and by a father who hit him in an attempt to make him “a man”, and realised at a young age he was gay.

“That’s the America I knew [in the 1960s],” Daniels said. “My mom knew something was going to happen to me if I didn’t leave.”

With a small pot of money raised by his family, Daniels went to college for one year in Missouri before he started a nursing...

Nicole Kidman Dances Her Way Through Vitamin Commercial—Watch Here!
Nicole Kidman at an event for Amores peligrosos (2012)
Nicole Kidman's dance moves were made famous in Baz Luhrmann's Moulin Rouge. But now the actress is seen dancing her way through a Melbourne-based company's ad for Swisse Wellness Vitamins. The 45-year-old is shown prancing throughout a garden while picking fresh flowers and herbs. Kidman evokes every bit the Earth Mother role as she enjoys a green apple and fetches carrots fresh out of the ground. The Paper Boy actress looks perfectly one with nature as she lounges in the lush gardens. Whatever she's taking, we want it!

Did These Critics Go Too Far?
Marc Marut in Malas noticias (1994)
From "X-Factor" winner Cheryl Lloyd's debut album to Lee Daniel's 'The Paper Boy, the critics had a fresh batch of works to review this week.

Cheryl Lloyd's album Sticks and Stones was assaulted with several distasteful reviews. This week was no more forgiving for Miguel's Kaleidoscope Dream, Muse's The 2nd Law or The Vaccines' Come of Age.

In movies, Lee Daniels' The Paper Boy was deemed as struggling to find a balance between humour and seriousness, leaving the film too unfocused for some reviewers. "Butter" and the intensely hyped "Taken 2" also failed to impress, as did horror film "V/H/S" -- a piece of cinematic coal that most critics have vowed to never rewind.

We've corralled all of the reviews in the gallery below. Were the reviews warranted or are a little misguided? Let us know what you think in the comments section.

'ParaNorman' and 'The Tall Man' Lead Our Best and Worst Movie Promos of the Week
I like sports, but I wouldn’t say I was particularly excited to watch the Olympics. However, now that the event is underway, I can’t stop watching! Assuming quite a few of you may be indulging in swimming, gymnastics, beach volley and more, I can’t help but wonder why ParaNorman and Wreck-It Ralph are the only two features seizing the marketing opportunity. While those two reap the benefits of airing between high-stakes Olympic events, the The Paper Boy and Killing Them Softly try to consume Web-based viewers via Web-based trailers. Both generate a great deal of intrigue courtesy of big name players and riveting visuals, but neither cross the barrier into truly alluring material that leaves you wanting more. Bachelorette and Taken 2 take steps in the right...

Hugh Jackman And Lee Daniels Teaming For Mlk Assassination Drama Orders To Kill
It would seem that Hugh Jackman and director Lee Daniels really, really want to work together on something. For the longest time both were attached to the drama Selma, a civil rights story about how Martin Luther King Jr. and Lyndon Johnson and how the Alabama civil rights march led to the signing of the Civil Rights Act. Unfortunately it was a project killed by time, as both Jackman and Daniels ended up moving on to other projects such as The Wolverine and The Paper Boy, but now they are apparently ready to reteam, and, funny enough, it will be on another story about Mlk. This one, however, will be quite a lot different. The La Times has learned that the pair are now attached to make Orders to Kill, a film that tells an alternate tale about the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. on April 4, 1968. Described as an...

Zac Efron Gets Lucky With Costar: "It Felt Great"
Zac Efron at an event for Running Wild with Bear Grylls (2014)
Zac Efron really is a lucky fella. Not only does he having his new flick, The Lucky One, hitting theaters on Friday… But Mr. Efron, 24, has some really steamy scenes in the flick with his beautiful costar Taylor Schilling, 27. "We had great chemistry," Zac told me at last night's Lucky's premiere in Hollywood. The sexy work didn't come until they had been working together for about four or five months. "We knew each other every which way," Efron said, adding, "It felt great." (When I mention that he has similar scenes with Nicole Kidman in the upcoming The Paper Boy, Efron beamed, "Yeah, hot blondes!") "We were so comfortable with each...

Must Watch: Full House Tournament Fighter Uncle Jesse vs. Uncle Joey
"What, were you expecting a picture of John Stamos?"

Have you ever found yourself wondering whatever happened to predictability? The milk man? The paper boy? Evening TV?! You probably haven't because all of those things still exist except for the reason why Full House picked such a ridiculous theme song that had nothing to do with a widowed news anchor fathering his three daughters and two dead-beat brothers who had seemingly interesting talents but never really Did Anything With Them!

...It's enough to make me wanna punch Bob Saggett in the face and say "goodnight Michelle" as he loses conciousness...luckily thanks to LucasZeb, my 90's rage doesn't have to go to that extreme and I can subside my rage watching John Stamos and Dave Coulier go two rounds head to head Street Fighter style...which is nice. Enjoy the video and comment below.

By the way this game doesn't...

Man Builds X-Wing Box Car, Races Into Our Hearts
One of my greatest personal regrets is that I’ve never participated in a Soapbox Derby. Maybe I’m romanticizing the hell out of the experience, but the idea of building my own gravity-powered vehicle and racing down a hill to glory always captivated my young and impressionable mind. It’s a grievance I fully intend to rectify when I have a little nerd of my very own, and now thanks to Instructables user The Paper Boy, I have my design.

The Paper Boy claims that he only spent $75 in raw materials constructing this amazing X-Wing box car. It comes complete with a head-swiveling, beep-booping Artoo dome, and if these figures are accurate, then Pb got an amazing level of quality for a very reasonable price.

Click here to view the embedded video.

He didn’t win the derby with his X-Wing design. But who cares? With a design like this one,...
